PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 1
COLLINGWOOD vs PORT ADELAIDE
Your boys had a comfortable win in the end, your thoughts?
Yes I was happy with how the boys played 4 quarters of footy, we took the foot off the gas in the third term but still won the quarter. We still have areas to improve though.

Chris Dawes got reported for a head high bump on Jacob Surjan in the third quarter, do you think he will cop any weeks?
Um, probably not, he didn’t knock the bloke out; it was just a rough shepherd, he’ll be fine.

You subbed Dayne Beams off at 3 quarter time because of injury, what happened?
Yeah Dayne copped a knee to the thigh in a marking contest and went off the ground, it wasn’t going to affect the result at that stage so we thought we’d sub him off and get Johnno on. He will be fine, it’s just a corky.

Kangaroos next week, are you confident your boys will get the points again?
I’m confident we can, yes, but not over confident. They’re coming off a loss in Perth, and it’s always hard to follow up a Perth game with a 6 day break, but I’m expecting a good game.

Who’s the danger man at North Melbourne?
Well, Boomer Harvey is always up and about, but also Drew Petrie and Andrew Swallow, are both x factors.

Thankyou and good luck next week.
Okay mate.

COLLINGWOOD TROUNCE NORTH MELBOURNE LED BY BIG THREE

Collingwood’s midfield trio, Scott Pendlebury, Dale Thomas, and Dane Swan, have led the Pies to a massive 79 point victory over the Kangaroos.

Daisy Thomas led the way with 29 disposals and 3 goals. Pendles also booted 3, and racked up 30 touches, and Dane Swan followed with 22 and also 3 goals.

The Pies led all day, showing far too much experience and skill for the young North Melbourne team, who showed glimpses of improvement from last season.

The Magpies kicked 4 of the first 5 goals of the game, while the Kangaroos played great footy in the first half of the second quarter, kicking the first 2, they were outplayed by Collingwood, who kicked the next 5. Edwards and Campbell kicked one each to bring the half time margin back to 25 points. Daisy Thomas was playing a blinder, 20 disposals and 3 goals to his name at half time.

The Pies oozed class in the third term, with 8 individual goal kickers in the quarter to only Petrie and Edwards from the Roos, kicking 2 each.

The Pies ran away with the game in the final quarter, kicking another 8 goals to North Melbourne’s 3.

The Roos had a few shining lights, Andrew Swallow had 16 disposals, Harvey 14, Wells 15, Petrie kicked four, and McIntosh dominated the ruck.

Next week the Pies take on Carlton, who is undefeated after a healthy win against Gold Coast, and North Melbourne have the bye.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 2
COLLINGWOOD vs NORTH MELBOURNE

Congratulations on the win, your boys played another hard, full four quarters of footy. Will they be up and ready for next week against Carlton?
Yeah they did, I thought they played really well, and I think they will be fine; we’ll hit recovery tomorrow, and see how we go.

Collingwood really dominated the second half…
Yeah, I believe the key in footy these days is fitness, we proved that today. Our high altitude training camp in Arizona helps our fitness and I reckon it gives us an edge in games.

You are unfurling the Premiership flag next week, any insight on who will do the honours?
Nah, I can’t spoil it, you’ll find out on Friday!

Will Dane Swan and Chris Judd match up next week?
At some stages I think they will, it will be a great battle.

Who else do you have to watch from the Blues?
Well Juddy, Murphy and Gibbs are the main ones we will have to give plenty of attention.

Thanks and good luck next week.
Okay mate.

On Friday night footy, the both undefeated Collingwood and Carlton clash. Last week, the Pies defeated North Melbourne by 79 points, and the Blues bet the Gold Coast Suns by 53 points. Both sides are in ripping form, and look to remain undefeated.

The Magpies will also be unfurling their 2010 Premiership Flag, in front of their home crowd at the G.

It is a great chance these two teams will extend their heated rivalry even further tonight.

Collingwood has gone into the clash with 1 change, Dayne Beams omitted and Brad Dick comes in for his first game in 2011.

MAGPIES INACURATE AS THEY BEAT THE BLUES

Collingwood has defeated Carlton by 29 points in a good, close contest at the MCG last Friday.

The night began with Collingwood unfurling their 2010 Premiership Flag by the one and only, Simon Prestigiacomo. Presti was selected to play in Collingwood’s Grand Final win but ruled himself out of the game because he knew he wasn’t 100% fit.

Collingwood got off to a bang, showing no signs of a Premiership hangover, kicking the first four goals, with 3 coming in the first 2 minutes. The Blues eventually fought back in the first quarter to take the lead at the first change by 4 points.

Carlton kicked the first 3 in the 2nd quarter, and looked to take control of the game, but the Pies never gave in, kicking the next 5 and ended up with a 5 point lead at the main break.

The third quarter was slowed right down, with Collingwood kicking 3.2 to Carlton’s 2.0, the lead at the final break was to Collingwood by 13 points, but the unpredictability of the game meant that it was still anyone’s game.

The last quarter started off with the Blues kicking 2 goals to get the margin back to 1 point, but the Pies switched on to kick the next 4 to take a healthy lead. Carlton only managed 1 more goal and the Pies held onto the footy to run away with a 29 point win.

The Pies got a few problems out of the game; they kicked a whopping 11 behinds in the final quarter, and should of won by a lot more. Ben Johnson got reported for an illegal bump which he lifted his elbow to collect Jordan Russell, and looks certain to miss a few games. They also had an injury problem; Leon Davis strained his hamstring and will miss 4 weeks.

Dane Swan was outstanding, with 39 disposals and 2 goals. Scott Pendlebury (28), Dale Thomas (27), and Luke Ball (26) were also influential.

Bryce Gibbs was Carlton’s best, with 26 possessions, Carrazzo had 25, and Chris Judd (18) also played well.

Jeffy Garlett was the leading goal kicker in the game, with 5, Travis Cloke booted 3.

Next week Collingwood take on Richmond, who are yet to have a win, and Carlton take on the also winless Bombers.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 3
COLLINGWOOD vs CARLTON
Congratulations on the win, you got off to a great start, kicking the first 4 goals, and ended up trailing at quarter time, weren’t too happy I’d imagine?
No, not at all, we started brilliantly, and they kicked the next 8. I’ll be bringing this up at the meeting during the week. Let’s hope we don’t slack off like that next week.

Is Ben Johnson in trouble?
Not sure, I haven’t seen it in slow motion, but it doesn’t look great.

You subbed off Leon Davis in the third quarter because he done a hamstring, how long?
Yeah well we’ll have to see how he is during the week, but I’m guessing 3-4 weeks.

Are you a fan of the sub rule?
Yes, it’s great if you have injuries, some of the players don’t like it though, which is fair enough.

Richmond are winless so far this year, your thoughts?
Well, they’re better than their form suggests, players like Riewoldt, Deledio, Martin and Cotchin are great players and we’ll have to be ready for them.

Thanks for your time, good luck next week.
Okay mate.

TRIBUNAL REPORT:

Ben Johnson from Collingwood has been suspended for 3 weeks for striking Blues defender Jordan Russell last Friday. The match review panel gave him 4 weeks reduced to 3 with an early plea. The Pie talked it through with the club and he chose to take the 3 week ban, and won’t take it any further.

“I am disappointed with the incident, and accept my penalty,” Johnson told us.

Ben Johnson will miss 3 weeks due to suspension.

FRIDAY, APRIL 15

Collingwood want to continue their winning run tonight against Richmond at the MCG, the Pies are coming off a 29 point win over the Blues, and Richmond lost to Hawthorn last week by 3 goals.

Last time these two sides met was in round 17 last year, when the Pies gave Richmond a flogging by 72 points. And most recently, in the NAB Cup, when the Pies won by 4.

The Tigers haven’t got a win yet in 2011, but look to have massive signs of improvement from last season.

Collingwood go into the game with 3 changes, Ben Johnson is suspended, Leon Davis is sidelined with a hamstring injury, and Brad Dick is omitted. Replacing them are Dayne Beams, John McCarthy and Simon Buckley.

COLLINGWOOD WIN EASILY BUT COULD PROVE COSTLY

Collingwood has defeated Richmond by 78 points at the MCG last Friday, but they may pay a price over the next few weeks. Ruckman Darren Jolly injured his hamstring and may be out for atleast 6 weeks. To make matters worse, Dayne Beams injured his calf and Simon Buckley hurt his shoulder and both look to miss a couple weeks.

Collingwood dominated the first quarter, smashing the younger, less experienced Tigers in what seemed to be every clearance, to lead by 28 at the first change. The quarter included a Travis Cloke bomb from 60 metres and a goal of the year contender from Alan Didak with a left foot check side from the boundary, and also 3 goals from Daisy Thomas, who was on fire.

Richmond won the second quarter but only by 4 points, and Collingwood were still looking pretty comfortable. In the third quarter, Collingwood came out with an even better performance than the first quarter, kicking 7.6 to Richmond’s 1.3, to have a 66 point lead at the final break.

The Pies finished strong in the last to run away 78 point winners.

Dale Thomas was by far the best player on the ground, with 32 disposals and 4 goals, not far behind were Dane Swan (26, 2 goals), Travis Cloke (22, 4 goals), and Scott Pendlebury (18, 2 goals). Chris Dawes booted 5 goals.

Shane Tuck, Brett Deledio and Dustin Martin were Richmond’s best, all with 18 disposals. Trent Cotchin racked up 15 possessions and kicked 3 goals.

Next week Collingwood take on the Bombers, who are yet to record a win, in the big Anzac Day match, and Richmond take on the Kangaroos.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 4
COLLINGWOOD vs RICHMOND
Congratulations on the win, you got off to a ripper start, and just got better, did you do anything different during the week?
Yeah I did, I said to the boys last week that if they don’t want to play at a high intensity from the first bounce to the final siren, the can play in the seconds.

Darren Jolly hobbled off in the last quarter, how serious is his injury?
Pretty serious, the trainers have said he’ll miss about 6 weeks, but we don’t want to rush his recovery, he will most likely come back through the VFL.

What about Buckley and Beams? Not as bad I hear?
Yeah they aren’t that severe, but they both will miss a couple.

Biggest game on the home and away fixture, Anzac Day, thoughts?
Yeah it will be a good game, regardless of where the Dons are on the ladder, they always give us a good run.

One last question, is Dale Thomas just getting better and better?
I think he is, he is improving with every game. A bloke that can get 30+ possessions and kick 4 goals is a gem.

Thanks for your time, good luck next week.
Okay mate.

Collingwood go into this match with many changes, the injured Darren Jolly, Dayne Beams, and Simon Buckley make way for Brent Macaffer, Cameron Wood and young Alex Fasolo, a 19 year old from East Fremantle who is in for his first AFL game.

Essendon is also missing a key player; Dustin Fletcher has a corked thigh and won’t be lining up against the Pies on Monday.

COLLINGWOOD WIN, BUT ONLY JUST, ON ANZAC DAY
Collingwood has extended their winning streak to 5 with a win over Essendon in the Anzac Day blockbuster. The Pies ran away with a 13 point victory.

The game started with the Bombers bursting out of the blocks kicking the first 3 goals, and had a lead of 23 before Collingwood even got an inside 50. The Magpies nailed them back in what seemed to be 5 minutes and kicked the next 6 in the quarter to take a 13 point lead at the first break.

The first quarter fight back by Collingwood was sparked by first gamer Alex Fasolo, who booted 2 goals.

The second quarter was pretty even, with tight contests from the stoppages. The quarter turned out to be the Mark Williams and Travis Cloke show, both kicking 2 goals each, with Cloke snagging 3 before half time.

In the third, Travis Cloke kicked another 2 goals as the Pies led by 26 at the final break.

The last quarter was a goal fest, the teams went goal for goal, until the Pies snagged quick back to back goals through Krakouer and Macaffer, to go out to a 37 point lead with about 15 minutes of play to go. However, Essendon fought back, with goals from Reimers, Williams, Gumbleton and Watson, who fought hard all day. But the Bombers ran out of time as Collingwood held on to win by 13 points.

First gamer Alex Fasolo played a superb game, with 20 disposals, 3 tackles, 6 marks and kicking 2.2, as he looks to cement a permanent spot in this Collingwood line up.

Scott Pendlebury won the Anzac Day Medal for best on ground with 27 disposals and 2 goals, Travis Cloke booted 7.2 and wasn’t far behind in the voting. Sharrod Wellingham (28), and Dane Swan (27, 2 goals) also played great games.

Jobe Watson was Essendon’s best, with 20 possessions and a goal.

Next week the Magpies take on the Bulldogs, who are coming off a win at Paterson’s stadium over Fremantle, and Essendon play Gold Coast.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 5
COLLINGWOOD vs ESSENDON
Congratulations on the win, Essendon seemed to throw everything at you all day, your thoughts?
Yeah they did, they are a quality side with plenty of youth and skill, and I’m so surprised they are yet to win a game.

Cloke booted 7 goals, how important is he to Collingwood?
Yeah he’s extremely important, he has a great set of hands and his goal kicking is improving. He’s up there with the best forwards in the game.

What do you make of Alex Fasolo’s first game?
He played well, and on a massive stage too. What was it, 20 disposals and 2 goals? Yeah that’s a great start to a career.

Bulldogs next week, another win?
Hopefully, they’re playing good footy, we’ll have to show up to play next weekend.

Thanks for your time, good luck next week.
Okay mate.

COLLINGWOOD GET PAST BULLDOGS IN THRILLER
Collingwood has pulled off a miraculous victory today over the Western Bulldogs by 2 points. The Magpies were down by 17 points with 5 minutes to go and Scott Pendlebury kicked the match winner with 38 seconds left in the game.

The first quarter was a great battle, with Collingwood edging the Dogs out to lead by 3 points at quarter time. However, in the second, the Bulldogs kicked away through Hall, Murphy, Cooney and Giansiracusa, and took a 20 point lead at the long break.

In the third, the Pies hit back through Krakouer, Fasolo, Swan, Wellingham, Dawes and Pendlebury, but it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs steadied and kept a 7 point lead at 3 quarter time.

The final quarter was by far the best. In a tight contest the first goal went to 2nd gamer Alex Fasolo, but the Bulldogs got the next 3, with Higgins kicking two and Murphy kicking his fourth, the lead was 17 the Dogs way, and 5.08 left on the clock. Collingwood got it down to Fasolo again who went back to kick his third. Chris Dawes missed from 50 out, and the lead was 10 with 3 minutes to go. Time was running out for the Pies but then a turnover from Brian Lake handed Travis Cloke his fourth goal. The next clearance went to Collingwood but once the footy got into the forward 50 it got fisted out of bounds. At the throw in Cameron Wood belted it towards the goal square where Scott Pendlebury was running into to scoop it up in traffic and kick the match winner with only 38 seconds to go.

Dane Swan was best on ground, with 32 possessions and a goal. Travis Cloke (25 disposals 4 goals), and Scott Pendlebury (24 disposals, 3 goals) were also instrumental.

Robert Murphy was the Bulldogs best, with 24 disposals and 4 goals. Matthew Boyd racked up 25 possessions and was also good.

Next week the Bulldogs take on Sydney in Canberra, and Collingwood have they bye.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 6
COLLINGWOOD vs WESTERN BULLDOGS
Congratulations on the win, would you call yourself lucky to get the win today?
Yes and no, they lead for the majority of the game and we hit the front with what, 38 seconds to go? Yeah well we had to work hard.

Alex Fasolo has come into this side as a shock inclusion, will he be a regular?
Well, not yet, Faz has shown what he can do and will have to keep playing this well to stay in the side, but he’s played two games and kicked 5 goals. that’s handy.

Collingwood have the bye next week, doing anything different?
Well the boys will have the weekend off to rest, but our training won’t slack off. We’ll be up and about for Geelong in two weeks time.

Thanks for your time, good luck next week.
Okay mate.
