RISING STAR NOMINEE

Collingwood midfielder/forward Luke Rounds has been awarded with the round 11 AFL Nab Rising Star nomination with his dominant performance against St Kilda. Rounds has been on Collingwood’s list since 2009 after being selected with pick no 46 in the 2008 draft. He played his first AFL game in round 10 against West Coast and got 15 touches and 2 goals.

Last week he tallied up 24 disposals, 6 marks, 12 tackles and 2 goals in a super performance, which won him the nomination.

Luke Rounds has had a big impact in his first couple of games

INJURY REPORT

Collingwood’s Ben Johnson has picked up an injury whilst playing VFL last weekend, the half back injured his ankle in the loss to Williamstown. Johnson will likely miss 3 – 4 weeks. Brent Macaffer also injured his groin, and will most likely miss a bit of action.

ROUND 12:
MELBOURNE vs COLLINGWOOD
MCG
MONDAY, JUNE 13
2:10 PM

This week the Magpies are taking on Melbourne in the Queens Birthday clash at the MCG. The Demons are sitting in 12th position, but only one game out of the top eight, as they look to defeat the top of the table Pies and extend their winning streak to 3.

Collingwood has gone into this big match with several changes; Chris Dawes and Jarryd Blair are in replacing the injured Leigh Brown and Alan Didak.

Another blow to Collingwood’s tall line up, skipper Nick Maxwell is ill and will also be unavailable for this game, which gives young soccer convert Lachlan Keefe his first chance in the AFL, he’s in for Maxwell and will mostly play back and pinch hit in the ruck.

COLLINGWOOD GET THE WIN OVER MELBOURNE IN A STRUGGLE
Collingwood has defeated a gallant Melbourne at the MCG by 6 points after an early scare.

Melbourne kicked 7 goals to the Pies’ 3 in the first quarter; with two in the first two minutes. The Magpies kicked 3 goals 6 in the term with a pretty woeful effort in front of goals.

The Pies then hit back in the second, goals from Fasolo, Thomas, Pendlebury and first gamer Keeffe saw the scores level at the main break.

The third quarter was a battle, with tonnes of tackles and hard contests, but the Magpies came out on top and took just a 6 point lead at three quarter time.

In the last, Lynden Dunn kicked the first major within 30 seconds to level the scores. Not long after, Liam Jurrah kicked his third and the Demons led by 6. But then a run from Collingwood, with goals from Dawes, Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Fasolo and Thomas, had the Pies out to a 24 point lead, with about 6 minutes on the clock. Melbourne refused to lie down, Bate, Jurrah and Dunn kicked another one each to cut the lead back to 6 points. The next clearance went to the Magpies as they held onto the footy to steal a 6 point win over the Dees.

Acting skipper Scott Pendlebury was yet again dominant, with 29 disposals and 3 goals. Dane Swan (32, 1 goal), Steele Sidebottom (28, 1 goal), Dale Thomas (22, 3 goals) and Darren Jolly (26) were also Collingwood’s best.

Jack Grimes had 20 disposals and a goal, and was Melbourne’s best. Matthew Bate and Liam Jurrah both finished with 4 goals each.

Next week Collingwood has the bye, as they look to bring back some key players for the Swans in two weeks time. Melbourne takes on Fremantle.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 12
COLLINGWOOD vs MELBOURNE
Congratulations on the win, Melbourne really took it up to you…
Yes they did, it’s a credit to them, they’re a great young side, they didn’t win today but I reckon finals are on the cards for them.

No injuries or reports today, that’s a first!
Haha I reckon, it’s great.

How many changes will you be looking to make for the Sydney game?
Don’t know, there will be a few, Taz is back, Maxy is back, Krak’s back, Leigh Brown’s back, there might not be any room the way we’re playing without them!

Thanks for your time, have a good week off.
Okay mate.

ROUND 14:
SYDNEY vs COLLINGWOOD
ANZ STADIUM
SATURDAY, JUNE 25
7:10 PM

This week the Magpies take on the Sydney Swans. The Swans are sitting in 10th, and with a win tonight they could well slip back into the top eight. However, the Swans haven’t beaten the Pies in several years, and it will be a tough task yet again.

Collingwood will go into the game with lots of changes, with big name inclusions. Chris Tarrant, Leigh Brown, Nick Maxwell are all back from injury, and Andrew Krakouer is back from suspension, players making way for them are Tyson Goldsack, John McCarthy, Lachlan Keefe and Simon Buckley.

PIES WIN AGAIN OVER THE SWANS BUT FOUND IT TOUGH
Collingwood had a win over Sydney last night, by 9 points, but the Magpies found it tough, even though they led all game.

The Swans would always hit back when the Magpies had a decent lead, but could never manage to hit the lead, as the Pies won 92 to 83.

Sydney’s big names played at their best, even though all of them picked up an injury in the game. Goodes, Bolton, McVeigh and Jack all picked up injuries and will all miss next week against Adelaide.

Bookies are licking their lips as punters are backing Scott Pendlebury to win the Brownlow Medal, the star racking up 35 disposals in a blistering performance, he had 14 of them in the first quarter alone. Steele Sidebottom had 26 and a goal, and Dane Swan picked up 25 disposals in the win.

Jarrad McVeigh was the Swan’s best; he had 23 possessions and a goal. Kieran Jack, who badly sprained his ankle in the last quarter, had 17 disposals. Ryan O’Keefe booted a game high three majors.

Next week Collingwood take on Hawthorn in a game of the round, 1 vs 2, MCG blockbuster, and the Swans take on Adelaide.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 14
COLLINGWOOD vs SYDNEY
Congratulations on the win, you led all game, but couldn’t break free from the Swans, thoughts?
Yes it was a hard match, Sydney is well known for never giving up when they’re behind and always fighting until the end, it’s a credit to the boys for leading all game.

The big one next week, 1 v 2, who are some Hawthorn players’ you at Collingwood will have to watch carefully?
Well, to be honest, all of them. But the biggest one is Buddy Franklin, he is a star and we must, key word, must, keep him quiet.

Shaun Burgoyne is playing a blinder of a year, will anyone be tagging him?
Um, probably not, I believe we can win without tagging and just letting both midfields do their thing.

Thanks for your time, good luck next week.
Okay mate.

PIES, HAWKS, PLAY OUT A DRAW IN A THRILLER

The first draw in season 2011 has occurred today, with top two sides Collingwood and Hawthorn unable to find a winner after 4 hard quarters of footy at the MCG.

In beautiful conditions, the first quarter went goal for goal, but Hawthorn had the best of it as they led by just 2 points at quarter time.

The second term was much the same and the Hawks held onto a 5 point lead at the main break, thanks to Cyril Rioli, who had 3 goals to his name at this stage of the game.

The third term went the way of Collingwood, as the Pies at one stage led by 18 points, the biggest lead of the game, thanks to 3 goals from big key forward Travis Cloke. But, as Collingwood’s promising, young defender, Ben Reid, who was doing a superb job on Buddy Franklin, went down with a broken leg; Buddy got loose and snagged two goals to narrow the margin down to a goal in favour of the Magpies at the final change.

The Pies suffered from the loss of Reid in the final quarter, as Tarrant had to go to Buddy, leaving Maxwell to play on Roughead in the goal square. Roughead dominated the final quarter, kicking 4 goals as he carried the Hawks to a 6 point lead with about two minutes on the clock. The Magpies hit back, when Dayne Beams marked 50 metres out on the boundary, and slotted it to tie up the scores. Both teams fought it out to the death in the final moments but couldn’t manage a single point to win the game, as the two best teams in the comp could not be split on the day.

Dane Swan (26), Heath Shaw (23), Scott Pendlebury (22) and Steele Sidebottom (20) were Collingwood’s best, and for the Hawks Luke Hodge (23), David Hale (17) and Buddy Franklin (15) were leading from the front in a game where nearly every player on the ground played their part.

Next week the Magpies take on North Melbourne, who got thumped by the Saints, and Hawthorn plays Brisbane over in Tasmania.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 15
COLLINGWOOD vs HAWTHORN
What a game, it sure had its ups and downs, do you agree?
I sure do, we had our chances to win the game, but so did they. But as always, we will take as much as we can out of the game, and work on it for next week.

Your side kicked 4 goals 6 behinds in the final quarter, could we say it was Collingwood who blew their chances more?
No definitely not, just because we kicked poorly in one quarter doesn’t mean we drew the game on that factor. Hawthorn kicked 3 goals 5 in the second, and I haven’t heard you mention that?

Okay, Ben Reid was stretchered off in the third quarter with a broken leg, how bad is it?
Well, we’re not sure yet. It wasn’t a full break, just a minor one. But he will probably miss about 2 - 3 months, and may be back for finals.

Thanks for your time, good luck next week.
Okay mate.

This week the Magpies are taking on the Kangaroos, who are coming off an 88 point loss to the Saints. The Magpies have always had no problem beating North Melbourne, especially in their encounter in round 2, where Collingwood won by 79 points.

COLLINGWOOD SLAUGHTER THE KANGAROOS
Collingwood has come back after their draw to the Hawks last week, to thrash North Melbourne by 117 points. The Pies made it look like a training drill at the MCG on Sunday afternoon as they led all day on the way to a percentage boosting win.

The Magpies had a whole list of great individual performers; however, the highlight of the day was key forward Travis Cloke. The big man racked up 29 possessions, 12 marks and kicked 6 goals and 5 behinds.

Others who played big games were Scott Pendlebury, who had a game high 32 touches and proved he may be the Brownlow Medal favourite. Young forward/midfielder Luke Rounds had 25 disposals and a goal. Steele Sidebottom showed once again why he loves playing the Kangaroos, booting 5 goals.

For North Melbourne, Andrew Swallow had 24 disposals, Hamish McIntosh had 18, and Brady Rawlings had 17, were the standouts in a pretty woeful team display.

The only real problems out of the game were injuries to Leon Davis, Darren Jolly and Luke Rounds, all three players look to miss about 2 – 3 games each, which is a huge blow to the Magpies, as they will now be looking to play their best 22 to get them some match fitness before finals, which are 2 months away.

Next week the Magpies are taking on Carlton in a huge game for the two rivals, and North Melbourne play the Bulldogs, who are second, and will look to inflict as much pain on the Roos as Collingwood did on Sunday.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 16
COLLINGWOOD vs NORTH MELBOURNE
Congratulations on the win, is it safe to say the Collingwood is the bench mark in the competition?
Well, you can say all you like, but we still know we have areas to improve, and we have a few injury problems, so we have a lot to work on still.

Ah yes, the injury problems, injuries to Davis, Jolly, and Rounds, who will take their places next week?
Well, Cameron Wood looks certain to replace Jolly. But for Davis and Rounds we’ll have to have a deeper look into the VFL results of late to see who deserves a call up, players like Johnno and Macaffer are on the way back from injury, and might play as soon as next week. We’ll have to see.

Big rival game next week, Carlton on Saturday…
Yes mate, and a very important game it is too, they got done by over 100 points in the previous round, and are sitting down in seventh, they will be hungry for a win next week.

Indeed they will, thanks for your time, and good luck next week.
Okay mate.

COLLINGWOOD’S HEATH SHAW OUT FOR 8 WEEKS
Collingwood premiership defender Heath Shaw's AFL season is in jeopardy after placing what he described as a stupid bet. The AFL banned Shaw for 14 matches; eight of them suspended, and fined him $20,000 for paying half of a $20 bet at a TAB agency.

The AFL has punished the Shaw on Friday after a betting plunge on Maxwell kicking the first goal in the round-nine match against Adelaide. Shaw's suspension includes the Saturday blockbuster against Carlton and puts him out of action until the start of the finals series for the Magpies, who are on top of the ladder.

Shaw explained he was at the TAB agency with a friend, betting on horses, when the friend suggested they bet on Maxwell to kick the first goal. Shaw agreed and they placed a bet worth $20. Shaw also told two friends about Maxwell starting forward, rather than his usual role in defence. That led to three cash bets totaling $25. Maxwell told family members he would start forward in the Crows game. They decided to also place three bets totaling $85 on Maxwell kicking the first goal.

Will the suspension of Shaw affect Collingwood’s performance against rival Carlton on Saturday? Only time will tell…

ROUND 17:
CARLTON vs COLLINGWOOD
MCG
SATURDAY, JULY 16
2:10 PM

This week Collingwood take on their arch rival, Carlton in a Saturday afternoon clash at the MCG. Last time these two sides met was in round 3, when the Magpies defeated the Blues by 29 points. This time around the Blues have improved, but however are coming off a 109 point loss to the Bulldogs.
The Pies are without the services of the injured Luke Rounds, Darren Jolly and Leon Davis, and are also missing Heath Shaw, who is suspended for 8 weeks. The players in for them are Cameron Wood, Tyson Goldsack, John McCarthy, and youngster Ben Sinclair, who is in for his debut. The 19 year old from Scotch College impressed in the Nab Cup, and also the VFL, and finally gets his chance to impress on the biggest stage of them all, Collingwood vs Carlton.

MAGPIES PIP THE BLUES IN A COME FROM BEHIND CLIFF HANGER

Collingwood has defeated their arch rivals, Carlton in an absolute thriller of a game at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. Carlton led for the majority of the game until being overtaken by the Magpies in the final minutes of the last quarter.

Collingwood had the best of it in the first quarter, kicking 4 goals to Carlton’s 2, and led by 10 points at the first change. The second term however was all Carlton; the Blues kicked 6 goals to the Magpies’ 2, and led by 13 points at the main break. The second quarter onslaught by Carlton was led by Jarrad Waite, who booted 3 in the term.

The third quarter was a high paced, high possession quarter, with teams going goal for goal, and the Blues led by 12 points going into the final change, and the Pies were left wondering what they could do to change the dominance from Carlton in the last 20 minutes of football.

When Carlton kicked the first 3 goals of the last quarter, all hope looked lost for the Magpies, but out of the blue, super sub and first gamer Ben Sinclair kicked a goal with his first kick in the AFL, and sparked a comeback from the Pies, with Dayne Beams kicking his fifth for the day and Scott Pendlebury kicking his second, the Collingwood faithful knew their beloved Magpies weren’t backing down. And the Blues’ lead was back to 12 points.

With a great piece of play from Judd and Murphy, they managed to feed Waite his fifth for the game, and the lead was 3 goals, with about 7 minutes of play remaining. The Magpies still kept their cool, as Leigh Brown booted two and Jarryd Blair slotted one from the boundary, to tie up the scores. Dane Swan, who had 36 disposals in the game, bombed the ball from 60 metres, and no one from Carlton was back on the line, as the ball rolled through to give the Magpies the lead for the first time since the 4 minute mark in the second quarter. Collingwood managed to hold on in the last 2 minutes to snatch a 5 point victory over the Blues, who nearly produced one of the wins of the season.

Collingwood had a whopping 380 disposals in the game, with the key ball winners being Dane Swan (36), Scott Pendlebury (35), Luke Ball (33), Dayne Beams (32), Sharrod Wellingham (31), Steele Sidebottom (25) and Dale Thomas (24). The major ball winners for the Blues were Chris Judd (24), Marc Murphy (22) and Matthew Kreuzer (21).

Next week the Magpies take on the Gold Coast Suns for the first time, and the Blues will be playing Essendon in a must win game.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 17
COLLINGWOOD vs CARLTON
Congratulations on the win, it was a really tough game, your thoughts?
Yes it certainly was, a few of the boys are extra sore, Carlton really pushed us and if you ask me, they are a huge chance of going far into September.

There were a few injuries today, who were they and how bad are they?
Well, Tyson Goldsack has broken his foot; it is the same place as when Didak broke his, so about 8 weeks. John McCarthy done his hamstring, which is unfortunate for him because he finally got his chance again, as did Tyson, but John will probably miss a month on the sidelines.

Will you be resting any players because your team has Gold Coast next week?
Well, if they need a rest, we might have to rest them, but I won’t be dropping our gun players because we have the Suns, no.

Who will you have to look out for next week?
Is that a trick question? Gary Ablett! He is a champion, but we’ll also be keeping an eye on David Swallow, and Jared Brennan.

Gary is a champ hey, thanks for your time, and good luck next week.
Okay mate.
