Malthouse retires, Williams announced as coach

After eight years at the helm, veteran Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse has retired from football citing health concerns as a reason for his retirement. Despite not winning a premiership, he managed a couple of Grand Finals and several Preliminary Finals in his reign. At the end of the 2007 season, he announced he wouldn't go on and the Pies handed over the reigns to young Collingwood fan Peter Williams. Having coached at VFL level and TAC Cup level, Williams was excited to take the next step. "I'm really happy to be here and can't wait to get into it." he said.

Trade Week

Danny Stanley (19, OB 64/35) & Pick 14 (Collingwood) for Pick 1 (Adelaide)

"We have seen how strong this draft crop is and while Danny is expected to become a really talented player, we thought we have an opportunity to get the first pick and that's what we did."

Guy Richards (24, R 71/3), Julian Rowe (21, OB 70/7) & Pick 30 (Collingwood) for Pick 4 (Richmond)

"Another couple of guys who have fantastic currency and we thought stockpiling a couple of high picks will help us for the future, really happy with these trades."

Shane O'Bree (28, OB 77/0), Ben Davies (21, OB 70/13) & Ryan Lonie (24, 75/0) (Collingwood) for Pick 3 (North Melbourne)

"This is a huge trade giving away a few quality players but with 'Obie' getting older and we're going down a youth track we figured it's a good time to let him have a crack at another club. Ryan has been injury prone while Ben Davis has potential but is a fair way back in the queue."

Ryan Cook (19, 62/35), Brent Hall (21, TB 66/12) & John Anthony (19, TB 63/30) (Collingwood) for Gary Ablett (23, OB 79/5) & Steve Johnson (23, SF 76/2) (Geelong)

"A lot of people will see this as a coup for us and fair enough. But obviously all three players we sent to the Cats have massive potential. We're very excited about Gary and Steve joining us at the Lexus Centre next year."

Reliable defender James Clement has been named captain with Scott Pendlebury, Scott Burns and Josh Fraser all named in the leadership group. With Clement coming near the end, it is expected to be a short stint, but he was no doubt the best man for the job.

Summary:

"While we couldn't register a win over the pre-season, our aim was to get as many games into people as possible and to see what every player had to offer. Guys like Print and Mortensen have really put their hands up to be selected early on in their careers while Gary Ablett has made a seamless transition to our club."
