Coach Collingwood and Buckley - time to move on

Who holds that record now?
Believe it’s Whitten on 228. Assuming he coaches the year out he goes to 226 which is good for second. Lots of pretty good coaches in and around that games bracket.
He’s still miles off most coached matches total without a flag - Rocket Eade has that easily with 377.

Slightly different stat Ron The Bear - it’s longest tenure as coach at a single club without a flag. Instant you win a flag you’re ruled out.
Right now as far as I can tell it’s:
Whitten 228
Daniher 223
Carter 219
Stephen 214
B Scott 211
Buckley 211*

Source AFL Tables

There is one coach who adds an anomaly though - Chris Scott. While he has won a flag, he has now coached 217 matches at the same club since said flag without tasting success again.

s**t didn’t realise McHale - just clicked as I was looking at it.

Lose against the Kangaroos next weekend and the Collingwood board will come out and say that Nathan Buckley has the full support of the board..... so Nathan is safe.

I’d hope Pendlebury is smart enough to realise he’s played his last final.

A few years ago after a listless Collingwood performance, he observed that the game "didn't really mean anything" as he was used to Collingwood preparing for finals or at least fighting to get there. There'll be more where that came from.

The media forced Eddie out of Collingwood. Now they've got their sights on Nathan

Nothing to do with the fact that under his tenure Collingwood have only risen up the ladder once.

It’s going nothing to do with the media.

If anything, they’ve been soft on him with some going as far as to suggest that he should be renewed.

still think it is weird that the whole systemic racism thing was parked at Eddie's door and Bucks was not held accountable. That seemed to be a collective media decision as to who would carry the can publicly.

On the footy side I agree too, there is obviously a huge amount of respect for Bucks capabilities in the media (esp. former players), they see him differently to the fans.

So Collingwood has salary cup problems??? With that list?

Sorry, I mean lucky they got rid of treloar before his wife Played netball in Brisbane and she destroyed the clubs chances this year.
I wonder which player gets shown the underneath mechanics of a bus this year?
Please keep this football department together .... can someone point me to the gofundme page that’s set up, so I can donate??? #sidebyside

They could offload De Goey pretty easily and not miss a beat.

So everyone reckons Buckley is finished. And maybe he is. But then who?

They'll ask Clarkson but I'm not sure they'll be able to get him if he's committed to the Hawthorn rebuild.

Then it's Ross Lyon? Don Pyke? Michael Voss? Someone untried?
Just an idea on the next coach from left field - they could undergo a thorough interview process. A bit similar to the ones Hawks, Tigers, Dogs & Eagles did to get their respective coaches. None of these blokes were experienced before becoming premiership coaches. Maybe instead of reaching to get Clarko they could find the next Clarko by doing a bit of homework and research instead of the lazy approach

Worth noting if he were to stay he would become the coach with the most matches at a single club without a premiership in VFL/AFL history.
Just another stat worth noting - assume the pies don’t make the 8 this year, Bucks would have 10 completed seasons and only improved on the previous seasons ladder position once (2017 to 2018). Every other year he has either stagnated or gone backwards. How can anyone survive this unless they’re looked after in a boys club?

No other coach would have survived anywhere near as long with his record.

Buckley inherited a pretty good side.

Pendlebury 23, Sidebottom 20, Reid 22, Thomas 24, Lumumba 24, Cloke 24, Shaw 25, Swan 27 etc. coming off a flag and a GF appearance. Obviously Thomas got injured and was never the same after 2012 but most of those guys played plenty of good footy and the Pies progressively got worse and worse until 2018.

I don't know who pulls all the strings at Collingwood but you get the impression Buckley moved on players he clashed with. A bit like Adam Simpson by the time the 2018 GF rolled around that was his team, not the previous coach's. If he is judged/credited for the list changeover after 2011, does he get the same scrutiny now? Punting Treloar, Stephenson, Phillips for nothing just doesn't 'feel' like a Bucks move. Maybe it is, but either way this season shouldn't tell the Collingwood admin anything they don't already know about his coaching ability. It's been a decade and if they want to move in a different direction great, but the week to week 'will they won't they' stuff is a bit much.
