It is genuinely intriguing to watch such an outstanding player regularly go out of his way to avoid contact. I’m trying to think of the last elite footballer to share similar timidity and I honestly can’t recall one.

I’m not sure how much it impacts him as a player as he’s so good at everything else - his cowardice in the contest is just something we haven’t really seen from a gun player before.

But there’s also a chance he’s ahead of his time and in future generations the way players willingly smash bodies and accept physical contact on today’s game will be seen as archaic.

Well, he doesn't take physical contact. Has never taken even 1 contested mark. Cannot tackle an oncoming player. The only hard ball gets he has ever gotten are the free kicks he gets paid, normally for lowering his head into tackles.

There is loads this bloke cannot do. Can't play ahead of the footy because you can't get a load of easy footies there.

It is easier to list what he can do:

  • run into open space and collect a footy so long as there is no oncoming trffic
  • hit a target by hand or foot so long as he does not fear imminent impact
  • draw high free kicks by lowering his head into tackles
  • lay a tackle from behind if the tacklee doesn't see him coming
  • yell "give it to me" to his team-mates
  • win clearances if every single team-mate at the stoppage makes their main aim to make him win the clearance

He is a stand rule/exclusion zone champion. 30 years ago would have been BOG at circle work every time, but scared to go near the ball in games.

I think it's more "draw free kicks by exaggerating even the slightest contact in the same postcode by absolutely anyone". If the umpires were treating him like every other player he wouldn't get those either.

Lachie Schulz was traded for pick 11 and 34.

Disposals: 12.2 v 17.4
I50’s: 2.0 v 3.0
Metres: 196 v 239
CP: 4.0 v 4.5
Clearances: 0.8 v 0.9
Marks: 3.1 v 3.8
Tackles: 3.8 v 1.3
Goals & GA: 1.4 v 1.4
SI’s: 4.8 v 5.4
SI % : 20.0 v 27.6

What on God’s green earth did the Pies trade a first and second round draft pick for? Martin was 33yo playing in the wooden spoon team who was physically and mentally cooked and retired mid-season.

Schultz followed up with worst on ground v GWS in opening round.

I looked back on Schultz’s career and he’s had 1 x season that was above average … the rest are below average at best. Who made this trade?

It’s a form of footy karma for the pies drafting Ed Allen

Fadge must be responsible imo.

Got to love how Carlton folk make light of Schultz's Defensive pressure award, and assure us they won't miss the 30 plus goal output from Owies due to his lack of.....

You guessed it....

DEFENSIVE PRESSURE.

You really think only Carlton supporters are questioning the acquisition of Schultz for a 1st & 2nd rounder?

DEFENSIVE PRESSURE.

Had an extremely average tally against half-decent sides. You know that, though.

Owies lacked defensive pressure, tricks and was a liability when the heat was on.

Was an ok role player & depth.

Exactly like Schultz.. whom you gave up a 1st & 2nd rounder for.

So by your analysis he’s a very limited player. Doesn’t say much for the rest of the players in the competition.

Shultz won the coaches award for the pies last year. You know, the one they give to the fat kid as an encouragement to turn up next year as numbers are required to field a team.
“You take that back! My son is a good boy. He deserves his award because he tried harder than all of them”

Said my mum :$

I think Schultz’s is a better player than the role he is currently playing, but it begs the question if they just wanted a defensive small forward why not just use a younger player or even state league mid who generally can play the role very well without ponying up the draft and financial capital

Especially with Hill who is obviously a very good attacking small forward already

I am a Richmond supporter. He is a Daicos. I hated his dad. I hate his brother. I hate him. I will hate his son - unless Nikos gets attacked by a shark while trembling beneath the sheets of his bed because he is scared to go outside, and gets his leg bitten off so he doesn't get to 100 games, and the Tigers draft his son and give him a chance to be the first likeable Daicos in football history. Unlikely though, so I will hate his son.

Daicos is very good at what he can do. But he is very good at avoiding what he can't(or won't) do. Whilst a fear of body contact remains his kryptonite, I will remain his Alanis Morisette, and be here to remind him. :)

Because like the Carlton & Essendon of old, Collingwood HAVE to get the newest, shiniest, most expensive toys.

They’ve gone full circle.

Sounds like an unreasonable mindset to be in when critiquing or analyzing a player
