It is genuinely intriguing to watch such an outstanding player regularly go out of his way to avoid contact. I’m trying to think of the last elite footballer to share similar timidity and I honestly can’t recall one.
I’m not sure how much it impacts him as a player as he’s so good at everything else - his cowardice in the contest is just something we haven’t really seen from a gun player before.
But there’s also a chance he’s ahead of his time and in future generations the way players willingly smash bodies and accept physical contact on today’s game will be seen as archaic.

Well, he doesn't take physical contact. Has never taken even 1 contested mark. Cannot tackle an oncoming player. The only hard ball gets he has ever gotten are the free kicks he gets paid, normally for lowering his head into tackles.
There is loads this bloke cannot do. Can't play ahead of the footy because you can't get a load of easy footies there.
It is easier to list what he can do:
- run into open space and collect a footy so long as there is no oncoming trffic
- hit a target by hand or foot so long as he does not fear imminent impact
- draw high free kicks by lowering his head into tackles
- lay a tackle from behind if the tacklee doesn't see him coming
- yell "give it to me" to his team-mates
- win clearances if every single team-mate at the stoppage makes their main aim to make him win the clearance
He is a stand rule/exclusion zone champion. 30 years ago would have been BOG at circle work every time, but scared to go near the ball in games.
