If you look at recent appointments, the guys that have turned clubs fortunes around quickly and sustainably is Fagan and Noble. Collingwood should look at this model and look for an experienced football person, that's worked in the real world. In today's game, the coach is more a manager than strategist. Both the above guys know their strengths and weaknesses, how experience outside an AFL environment.

Is there anyone out there similar? Maybe chocco

Hard to believe it will be anybody other than Clarkson. The only people who couldn’t have been interviewed and accepted the job right now are people contracted for 2022 as a senior coach. All the top assistants/out of work coaches could have been interviewed and signed already. It makes no sense for Collingwood to wait until the end of the season to interview those candidates when other clubs such as Carlton could also be looking for a coach and interfere with those plans. So I think Collingwood have zeroed in on Clarkson and it’s just a waiting game to see if he his contract paid out from Hawthorn if fired, or gets nothing if he quits. Clarkson talk this week of never breaking a contract seems to indicate that game of chicken is just starting to heat up.

Clarkson ain’t leaving. He made that very clear. Would look like a idiot if he went back on that now

His speech had very strong Nick Saban 2006 vibes to it

I don’t think the people in Alabama are too worried about any embarrassment that comment may have caused given his record since he landed in Tuscaloosa.

But again regardless of all of that, why would Collingwood not have interviewed and hired Williams, Pyke, Scott, Lyon etc at some point in the last 6 weeks, instead of waiting until the end of the season when other clubs could spoil those plans?

The only reason to wait is if you have to wait, the only reason you’d have to wait is if your candidate can’t accept now, and the only people that fit into that criteria are the people currently under contract to coach in 2022.

Has Clarko ever developed his own players? Hodge/Mitchell/Franklin were there before him and the rest of the players were traded in. Siciliy is the only one I can think of. Maybe Bruest & Gunston but they walked into a Hodge/Mitchell led team

With the names you have listed, he has turned many many midtier players into A graders, e.g. Gunston, Gibson, Lake, Frawly, Hale, Burgoyne etc. There are probably a lot more but almost all the recruits hawks have gotten post 2008 went to another level.

Pyke is the obvious one. Took a bog average Adelaide list with no top 10 draft picks to a GF, before that did good things as the strategy guy at West Coast and now has turned Sydney from a rabble into a serious outfit.

No doubt Pyke has been a terrific addition to the Swans but is only one factor in the turnaround. The game plan was being road tested last season amidst a dire injury run. Recruitment has targeted skilled players. We also got very lucky with Hickey.

Most importantly the Bloods addressed deficiencies in the fitness and rehab areas. Our injury list has been significantly trimmed.

Franklin, Roughead, Lewis, Birchall, Rioli all arrived after Clarkson. Plus half of our other 2008/13/14/15 premierships players.

David King, the guy knows everything about footy. His insight onto the inner workings of game plans and stats make him peerless

I am with you, this guy knows it all. He is perfect at everything. We could see the first ever undefeated club if King took the reigns.
