Roast Collingwood Crowd - or the lack thereof

Victoria love to present themselves as the sporting capital of the Southern Hemisphere, but make them travel 3 extra kilometres to a different world class stadium and suddenly there's every excuse under the sun as to why they can't attend.

The only thing that saves them from NRL level crowds is that they get to play a Derby every 2nd week.

But but, its hard to get to!!

Port being 5th on that list is testament to the strength and passion of our supporter base, considering that the teams above us get gifted the best time-slots and marquee games.

We can't really complain this year. Of our 8 home games scheduled, we've had 4 Sat nights, 1 Sat twilight, 1 Sunday night (with Monday holiday the next day) 1 Friday and 1 Thursday. Our only dud is this weeks Sunday Twilight. 7/8 preferable and or Primetime is very good.

Even our away games has included 3/7 Saturday nights.

Lol yeah it’s AT LEAST a 500m walk to one of the biggest train stations in the world which can bring you in direct from practically anywhere including country towns.
And the bus to the airport don't forget.

Although the MCG does have three train stations and two tram stops, compared to just one station and two tram stops.

Noone could possibly complain about our timeslots so far this year. 4 of our 5 home games have been prime time

Amazing, one would think we were the reigning minor premiers, or something!

Half those games were 12:40 starts too 🤪

Which was fine for me, as I was still powering on through from the night before.

Our away games are actually 3/6 re Saturday nights as we have the bye Rd 12, and of the 3 day games 1 was the preferred Sunday middle game, against Collingwood.

Rd 1 was the 12.40 SA /1.10 EST on Sunday v North, and GC 1.15/1.45 Saturday game. These 2 games were always going to be crappy time slots against poor drawing teams.

The 2 weeks at time fixturing hurts crowds as people are making plans further out, but so far we have been rewarded for being a premiership/top 4 contender and winning games. AFL have had to live up to their mantra of play well, we will give you good timeslots.

we’ve been given a good run of night time games this year that we rarely get, but not the marquee games that get gifted to the Vic clubs.

Also lol at them handing us a few good timeslots in a year that crowds have been decimated by the ghost of covid across the league.

You just know that as the vaccine rolls out we will go back to normal programming ie 14 Sunday twilight games a season.

Friday night against Richmond is marquee
Sunday night on a PH against St Kilda looked marquee when the fixture came out. Pity Saints havent had the season they projected to.
Sat night Showdown is marquee
Sat night against top of the table Dogs is marquee

Another night game against Geelong coming up is marquee.

its not like we are playing Gold Coast on a Friday night here.

If Sunday night v saints is considered marquee than half the comp can lay claim to a dozen marquee games. I think we’ve gotten more night games than usual but not a lot of marquee games, and certainly when you look at the standard that should be called marquee games ie how many games in nighttime slots v good drawing teams do the favourite 4 or so Vic clubs get? ******* heaps traditionally.

our timeslot draw might be exceptional against what we normally get, but i don’t think it really is exceptional compared to what pies hawks essendon geelong Carlton and so on get nearly every year.
