*So after feeling pretty flat yesterday, I figured the best way of fixing some RL disappointment in footy, is through some video game happiness, so I'd break out the old Total Aussie Rules (TAR), and hope it doesn't fail.

Season 2006

The Collingwood side of 2006 was solid, having come off a bottom two finish the year before, to win 10 games and finish sixth, before bowing out in the elimination final to Geelong. Meanwhile second placed Fremantle went on to win the flag - the first in its history, defeating Melbourne by 15 points, with Paul Hasleby taking home the Norm Smith Medal.

Off-Season:

RETIREES

Captain and vice-captain respectively, Nathan Buckley and Scott Burns both retired leaving behind holes that realistically would not be filled given the legacy they had left. They joined an absolute parade of champions retiring including Michael Voss, Chris Grant, Anthony Koutoufides, James Hird, Shane Crawford, Adam Simpson, Matthew Richardson, Robert Harvey and Barry Hall.

DELISTINGS

Despite wanting to go younger and rebuild through the draft, Collingwood left just two players unsigned, with 29 year-old former Eagle, Chad Morrison, and 21 year-old midfielder, Adam Iacobucci the two left without a contract.

TRADES

With the 2006 draft crop appearing to be a "Super Draft", Collingwood's aim was to improve it's draft position to the top and try and gain some early first round picks. The first was a shock exit of last year's number two draft pick, Dale Thomas to Carlton, along with Pick 58, in exchange for the first pick in the 2006 National Draft. The Magpies soon had the top two picks in the draft, after sending ruck duo Guy Richards and David Fanning to the Crows for the second selection. More young talent to walk out the door was John Anthony and Danny Stanley, who swapped the black and white for brown and gold, while the Magpies gained pick three. Finally, to gain the first four picks, Collingwood sent away Julian Rowe, Ben Davies and Pick 42 to the Tigers, in exchange for pick four.

The Pies were well aware that trading so much existing talent for potential could be dangerous, so they also looked to bring back in existing talent, trading for 27 year-old Eagles midfielder, Chad Fletcher in exchange for 25 year-old running half-back, Rhyce Shaw. The Magpies had an excess of small defenders, and were more short on midfielders after the retirements, delistings and other trades, and would look to bring some in. They brought in Leigh Brown for Brent Hall in the tall defender department, while gaining pick 64 from Fremantle, along with Paul Medhurst, for Ryan Cook who the Dockers had expressed an interest in. In the final trade, it was tough, but necessary to bid farewell to Ryan Lonie, along with Sam Iles, who headed to Adelaide in exchange for Ben Rutten. It meant the defence was sured up and would be a strength to the Pies going forward.

DRAFT

With the first four picks, Collingwood selected tall forward, Evan Wincott, ruck, Jorge Londino, tall back, Gregory Akhurst, and developing midfielder, Cesar Milbourne. With pick 10, the Magpies went a raw key position defender in Robert Peachey, while with pick 26, Collingwood went another ruck in Tyler Plumridge. Small forward, Owen Sharp was drafted with Pick 64, in what was a surprise draft for the Maggies, going almost exclusively tall when they needed midfielders.

In the Pre-Season Draft, the Magpies selected 30 year-old Hawk, Joel Smith, as well as 24 year-olds Richard Hadley and Andrew Krakouer, and former Bomber, Adam Ramanauskas.

COLLINGWOOD 5.0 | 8.3 | 10.5 | 14.6 (90)
ESSENDON 4.4 | 7.5 | 9.8 | 10.10 (70)

Collingwood kickstarted it's 2007 season off with a bang, defeating Essendon by 20 points, courtesy of a four goals to one final term. The game was tight throughout, as the Magpies led by just three points at the final break, before kicking away to the win. Many Magpies supporters were unhappy with the umpiring, winning just five free kicks to the Bombers' 14, while most other areas were failry even. New players, Chad Fletcher and Ben Rutten were superb, while Tarkyn Lockyer and Josh Fraser were also impressive.

GOALS: Rusling 2, Rocca 2, Cloke 2, Lockyer, Rutten, Fraser, Didak, Egan, Pendlebury, Clement, Caracella.
DISPOSALS: Fletcher 26, Licuria 23, Lockyer 22, Rutten 20

COLLINGWOOD 6.4 | 10.7 | 16.8 | 22.9 (141)
WESTERN BULLDOGS 4.0 | 7.0 | 10.1 | 14.2 (86)

The dominant damaging trio of Chris Tarrant, Anthony Rocca and Leon Davis have piled on 16 goals between them on the way to a 55-point victory over Western Bulldogs in Round 2. Tarrant returned from injury to have a massive impact on the game, booting 6.4 from 12 disposals and eight marks, but it was Rocca who dominated with 16 disposals, 11 marks (six contested), four hitouts and 5.1. Chad Fletcher and Paul Licuria were once again busy in the midfield, and despite the Magpies dominated in the clearances, they won the contested possession count and made the most of their 56 inside 50s, with 31 scoring shots. The sour note of the match was a report to James Clement who will miss next week's contest.

DISPOSALS: Fletcher 26, Licuria 27, O'Bree 23
