Apart from Zac Clarke and West there is nothing much else to make a play for. I was a massive fan of Max Gawn and hoped we would pick him up but he seems entrenched at Melbourne at the moment.

This is my thinking also. Majak Daw I'd probably add to that list but again will be hard to get. Outside of these everyone else is depth and best just to build with Keeffe and hope he can developing into that no.2 ruck position.

Gawn is an interesting one. Still a fair way away from being AFL ready. Will be interesting in 4-5 years time to see what he develops into. Lucky for us we have our own big coming through in Jarrod Witts - but will take time.

I don't really see a big advantage of chasing West. He wouldn't be particularly cheap. to me he is very much a first ruck option, rather than a forward who can spend 30 minutes a match in the ruck. I don't see him as much - if any - upgrade on Wood. I don't think that we need to chase a ruck prospect like West or Griffen as we've got Jolly and Wood who are at or above the same level. I'd much prefer to see us keep the current structure and find a genuine replacement for Brown - a competitive forward who can help out in the ruck.

Why West can be so effective is because even those his numbers may look average at best: he makes his touches count, has a more significant impact on the game than a Wood and also does all the things that don't show up in the stats card, has that physical presence and doesn't get pushed around and even more importantly he competes and wins the hitouts both around the ground and in the centre bounces against most opposition (hitout numbers don't look huge because playing no.2 ruck role). The curious thing with West is because he has versatility to play forward or back he can play a more similar role to L.Brown than any of the other potential replacements because he isn't an only ruckman, but he is also good enough to play the no.1 role.

Griffin I agree is only a marginal upgrade on Wood and probably not worthwhile.

A Tom Hawkins type would be a considerion. Problem is he has finished off the season well and looks like a likely keeper.

I think there are 3 options;

1. Someone like Callum Sinclair or even more left field a Trinity Handley or Nathan Blee / Tom Lee sort of player.

2. Just go with Keefe and develop him more into a 2nd ruck over summer. Quite plausible but needs work. I think its worthy.

3. Recruit Fevola and have Dawes do stints in the ruck.......about as likely as Bec Judd giving me the eye!

If we can't trade into a reasonable ruckman could even go the St Kilda path and recycle - not a favourite path of mine but as a no.2 ruckman all we need is a 22+ y/o role player type.

Daniel Stewart or James Sellar - if delisted. Fan of either?

Stewart's SANFL form has been really good and has produced some big numbers up forward. Felt for a while that he could be good in a better team for a coach with some faith in him.

Sellar I haven't really tracked this year but have heard he had a big 19 disposal 10 mark game down back recently. Obviously the high draft pick who hasn't developed.

Both tall enough to play minor ruck minutes and have that flexibility to play some other positions/ roles.

Not that we were talking about him but Brisbane are saying they want a first round pick + player for Mitch Clark. I'm not sure they'll get that but these types of players aren't cheap as they're in demand.

Mitch Clark for that one season proved very effective as a no.1 ruckman. Has struggled in every other role since.

I do question his attitude and want to be a serious player in this league. Doesn't seem like one who will ever really get it. Would take Trent West over him which is a big call considering how much less he has played and how low his profile is relative to Clark. Think West will have the better career all things said and done.

I think Brisbane might do well out of a Clark deal if they can get it to happen and get somewhere around what they are asking for.

i think itll be interesting to see the approach they take with Keefe now that browny has retired. we'd need someone to come in and play that role from day 1 next season and with that in mind i dont think keefe is up for that yet. he doesnt impose himself enough on the contests for mine and hasnt gotten the forwardline role down yet. i have no doubts that with time in the VFL he'll get there though

Callum sinclair is one that ive always liked the look of and would be keen to know more about him. But on face value and from what ive seen, at his age and his height he could be what were looking for in terms of a 2nd ruckman/forward at least in the short term, without costing us the earth

Keefe should now be groomed over the pre season to play the Leigh Brown role.

He has the athleticism (moreso than Leroy) just needs to develop the tank and spend more time alongside Jols learning to compete in the ruck. We know he is normally a very good kick of the footy and he can take a grab.

Makes perfect sense to me considering he really looks like the "like for like" replacement.

There is no way known we can afford to play both Jolly and Wood in the same side. It would be very painful to watch, particularly seeing defenders just rebound off Wood with ease.

There's no need to target other "rucks", particularly as we have plenty of our own in your backyard.

Jolly- #1 ruck.
Wood- back up #1 ruck.
Keeffe- Leroy Brown replacement
Witts- development/grooming to be the potential #1 ruck.
Ceglar- developing ruck.

He has the athleticism (moreso than Leroy)

Strongly disagree with this part. Keefe moves well for a 204cm guy, but he doesn't really move well for a KP player, and has zero leap. Leroy has him well covered.

edit: Also meant to say that otherwise I agree with what you've said!

I'd chill a bit; we have so many third talls we need to get a few games into already - big Nate will need cameos here and there on his return next year. Witts, Ceglar and even big Keeffie need a few games around the traps. Taz might go forward to let Dawes release his own version of uberanvil.

We already have about 10 relative newbies needing to show their wares next year in a few games each. Amazing.

Keefe should continue to be developed as a KPP back.

We needed to draft a mature back up KPP forward before Brown announced his retirement, now it's essential. If we need to we can swing Tarrant forward next year with the return of N.Brown, or even vice-versa. But C.Sinclair (although I have question marks on him) and even look at Brad Miller if Richmond let him go. Quentin Lynch would have been perfect for us if he hadn't have come good this year.

I also would like to see us draft Brett Eddy even after he blew out his knee.

There is zero need to target mature ages such as Brad Miller who will serve no purpose.

Also, don't we have a few father sons who are KPP forwards this season or at the end of next season in Starcevich and Stewart?

Nathan Brown will act like a new recruit next season and with more game time into Keeffe we should be fine for awhile yet (considering our current KPPs are all young).

Would be great if one or two of the rookie talls came good i.e. Gordon or Reilly. That would be a huge bonus.

I would normally agree, but I think we are in a different position where we have a very young list and may need some season squad back ups, that can fill in if Cloke or Dawes get injured or need a rest. I feel we got away with it a few times this year, as Keefe came in played in a position he had not played in the VFL and generally struggled to provide a contest.

If the mature ager is going to have an immediate impact and serve a purpose then I'm all for it i.e. Jolly, Tarrant, Ball, Krak.

However, names like Brad Miller cannot be taken seriously.

I agree that we either need to find some or develop/get more games into the guys on our current list i.e. Keeffe.

Personally, with another preseason into Keeffe and with the time to build his tank and teach him how to play Leroy's role it will only serve us better in the short and the long term without the need of having to get a stop gap solution.

I'm very optimistic and confident that he should be playing consistent senior football next year (not so much consistently well but certainly a heap of games) now with Leroy's shock retirement. The chance is there for him now, it really is his spot to lose if he is willing to take it.

Get Jack Gunston!

Finally, someone else agrees with me! I seem to be the only one interested at all.

I reckon he'd be a perfect fit for us. We are seriously lacking in up and coming KPFs, and with Leigh Brown retiring we need a third marking target IMO. Dawes and Cloke could do with another guy up there drawing a good defender, Dawes would probably end up getting the third best defender if Gunston continues to progress like he has.

He wouldn't break the bank and I reckon he'd be easily enticed to join us too considering how successful we currently are. Slots in well age wise as well, he'd rise up alongside an already talent laden group of youngsters. We've picked up some mature heads in recent drafts, grabbing a bloke like Gunston who would have a long term future but could still affect our prospects in the short-term would be ideal. Needs to put on some weight pretty badly, but he has proven this year he can already play at AFL level with his body size.

Would obviously cost us our first rounder + someone half decent. We'd want that sweetner to be John McCarthy probably, although I suspect Adelaide would be more interested in Goldsack (which I wouldn't be averse to).

What would you give up for Gunston?

1st round pick (pick 25/26) + fringe player (McCarthy/Macaffer)

That's all we could afford. Probably another club like Kangaroos could better that.

We would have to rely on Jack insisting on coming to Collingwood which is unlikely because we can't guarantee him that he will be in the best 22 next season. (Leigh Brown's 3rd tall position is probably going to Cam Wood as we need a ruckman to spell Jolly)

No harm in enquiring about him though.

Would prefer not to use Dawes as a ruck as I think he's had knee issues. But generally, I reckon Bucks will be more creative with selection and get fitness and game-time into Keeffe against ordinary opposition. Buttifant needs to get medieval on Keeffe over the summer.

That will have to cover it as the alternative is giving away a lot for a mediocre / non upgrade on our current rucks. I think just some good player mgt / experience and chop outs should be enough.

That said, wouldn't want to run the risk of having no-one if Jolly buckles under his knees.

Yeah I can see why you like them but for different reasons probably no.

Sellar might be that guy but I think you ultimately want someone that can hurt up fwd and I dont think Sellar can. Fwds need that extra yard of pace and Sellar lacks it for mine. In terms of Stewart more left field but he is agile, he can plasy as a 3rd tall but can he ruck - probably not physical enough.

Personally I would look at Trinity Handley...if you get to see some footage of him take the time. He is 27 and i dont think he will land on a list but would be a great stop gap rookie listed player. If he was on the Hawks list right now and Bailey and Buddy didnt play Saturday he would get in.

What do we think Essendon will do with Gumbleton. If I were them I would use him as trade bait along with one of Hille, Ryder, Bellchambers for a decent outside midfielder.

Not sure he has but know what you are saying and I tend to agree but I think sometimes a little run in the ruck for Dawes might help him get some touch etc. I think he could do it.

My preferred mode is get Keefe there. He has developed really well and nothing to say it wont keep improving.
