- Collingwood $2.40 - Western Bulldogs $1.70 -

Collingwood have started off their 2017 pre-season campaign naming a fairly young team, as coach Mark Williams said on Wednesday that they're going to go through a strategy of rotating their senior players this pre-season and get as many games into their young talent as possible, while allowing the new players to adapt to the squad.

They come up against an experienced bulldogs outfit, who finished 6th in 2016 after a stack of injuries forced them to go from Premiership contenders to just being able to hang in the top 6. They were knocked out of the finals in the first week and will definitely be looking to fire back this year with a healthy list.

The Collingwood list has a clean bill of health right now which is great news for all Collingwood fans and is a testament to their fitness staff.

The bulldogs will start favourite for this pre season clash, but there has been money in the water for Collingwood who are looking to start a charge with their new coach Mark Williams, and while the side they have fielded for this first round of the NAB Cup is short on experience, it's definitely not short on talent.

A big watch will be Collingwood's Pick 6 in 2014, Matthew Scharenberg who has been kept out of the side for the last 2 years due to multiple ACL Injuries. All of the Magpie faithful will be hoping he pulls up alright on Saturday night.

Collingwood vs Western Bulldogs

Collingwood come out firing for new coach Mark Williams, hold out late charge from the Bulldogs.

The Magpies have hit the ground running, with a 15 point victory in the first NAB Cup game of 2017.

6d7902ab6e.png

Collingwood jumped out to a 4 goal lead at quarter time, and held it all the way until 3 quarter time - with the Magpies playing a very free flowing game with precise kicking and disposals all around the ground, the Bulldogs were just unable to get a handle on them.

Collingwood's young brigade then began to tire in the last quarter, and it left the door open for the Western Bulldogs to fire up.
Unfortunately the gap was too much in the end, and even though the Bulldogs were able to kick 5 straight in the final quarter, Collingwood held on for an impressive 15 point win for new Coach Mark Williams.

Collingwood were inspired by Captain Scott Pendlebury who had 40 disposals, but it was his words before the bounce that were most important.
Pendlebury rallied the troops before the game and steadied the young brigade, highlighting the importance of getting off to a quick start under the new coach.

It was also a welcome return for Matthew Scharenberg, who touched the ball 31 times and cemented himself as an unstoppable force rebounding out of Collingwood's defence. The magpies supporters will be licking their lips at the prospect of having him in the team all season, and will be hoping he can stay injury free.

Unfortunately for Collingwood, the win was marred by the Injury of new recruit Justin Westhoff (5 goals) - who fractured his wrist late in the final term.
Justin will go in for scans on Monday morning and the severity of his injury will be revealed on Wednesday.

An absolutely dominant performance from the Collingwood captain tonight, and hopefully a sign of things to come.
The Midfield Maestro had 40 touches (22 kicks), 6 clearances, 11 inside 50's, 10 Marks, and also contributed a goal.

Collingwood Injuries: Westhoff
Substitute report: James Aish came on in the 4th quarter for Westhoff, and had 6 touches (all kicks).

Personally don't believe neither of them have the capabilities of becoming a number 1 forward. But good thing about PC is you can train them into being one :)

Are you happy now? Westhoff is injured. :(

Will be interesting to see how our forward line goes without him. Especially since he kicked 5.

Not happy at all, just don't feel like he can be a number one forward :p
Will be interesting to see how Moore and Cox fare without him though, or maybe even the coach might take the smaller forward line approach

Small forward lines tend to work terribly in this game. But we will see.

- Collingwood $1.75 - Carlton $3.00 -

After a great start last week, Collingwood has continued it's 'shuffling' approach it announced at the start of the pre-season.

This game will see 2 of Collingwood's top draft picks in 2016, Keith Wathen and Kaden Childs, make their debut for the side.
Also returning is a host of experienced players including Steele Sidebottom and Travis Varcoe, while many senior players have been rested as well.

Collingwood go into this match as favourites, after Carlton's disappointing performance against last week but Collingwood's strategy remains a risky one. It'll be interesting to see how this even younger side responds to the words of Mark Williams this week.

Can the Blues bounce back? Can Travis Cloke fire against his old side to get Carlton a pre-season win?
There is much to find out.

Collingwood vs Carlton

The Magpies show spirit, heart, and desire in gritty 1 point victory over Arch enemy.

Carlton was all the rage in the first quarter, and Collingwood's young brigade failed to get a grip on the game as they came out playing sloppy football and their kicking for goal in the absence of Justin Westhoff was embarrassing.

However, the Collingwood that returned in the second quarter was something else.

a6979e4f73.png

Ex-Collingwood player Travis Cloke had 2 goals at quarter time, and the game seemed all but over as the Magpies failed to register a score. The Magpies faithful walked into the huddle at quarter time with their hands on their heads, coach Mark Williams refused to spray them, instead he went over his whiteboard countless times, drilling his game plan into the minds of these young Collingwood players, which was a move that paid off tenfold.

230a7fac03.png

Collingwood came out firing in the second half, kicking 7 unanswered goals to take the lead late in the second quarter- Led by Darcy Moore. In the absence of Westhoff the young lad stepped up and finished the night with 6 goals, 3 of them in the second quarter. However the Magpie boys tired late and Carlton took two goals back in quick succession, setting the game up for a thrilling second half.

The third quarter was a power struggle that Carlton's older and more experienced bodies got the best of, however Collingwood didn't look dejected and instead returned in the 4th quarter brimming with confidence, knowing that they had the ability to pin back the margin after their second quarter heroics.

St Kilda reject Tom Lee stepped in for two quick goals, and the game was suddenly on. The Magpies took the lead late in the final quarter however Carlton kept coming furiously, sending a baptism of fire to Collingwood's new key defender, Kaden Childs - bombing the ball down into the direction of the teenager many times, hoping he would make a mistake. Kaden battled on however and was as smooth as silk, intercepting passes and taking strong marks in the backline. His hopes of an AFL debut are closer than the Magpies staff may have previously thought.

The end of the game could have been put down to irony, or luck on Collingwood's end.
Collingwood were 2 points in front with 50 seconds to go, The ball was kicked into Carlton's forward line by Patrick Cripps, only to be marked by Travis Cloke, out-muscling Lachlan Keeffe.

Cloke only had to line up from 20 metres out and slot it in for a well fought Carlton victory.

What happened next is history.
The ball came off the edge of Cloke's left boot, straight into the post.

Collingwood fans were elated, and happier than ever that they escaped defeat in the hands of a player that used to be one of their own.
Even though this was only a pre season win, Collingwood fans will consider it one for the ages.

Captain Scott Pendlebury was at his dominant best (39 touches), However the performances of Josh Smith and Keith Wathen will be well noted, with both of them stating they're ready to cement their place in this squad for Round 1.

Collingwood Dream Team Watch

Scott Pendlebury scored a massive score of 136 in the first round of the NAB Cup, Combined with the 127 he scored on Saturday night he remains a consistent pick and should be in everyone's Dream Team come round 1.

Keen Punters will be looking to pick up cheapie Matthew Scharenberg (115 & 122), and mid-pricer Josh Smith (116 & 129) looks like a sure thing to play Round 1, so lock him in with his two fantastic scores.

One to watch at a reasonable price would be Brent Macaffer (80 & 90) who looks to be scoring reasonably well despite being an 'outcast' in the squad in recent times. Can he keep this form up and does he deserve a place in your Dream Team come round 1? We will know by watching the rest of the NAB Cup.
