Heath Shaw. Where is he?
Yep, the only one missed who should definitely be in.

While arguments could be made for
Jolly v Fraser
Wakelin v Reid
Ball v O'Bree

these really come down to personal preference and selection criteria.

Making minimal changes to the ops team, to get Shaw in (and Johnson starting) I'd change the following lines:

HB H.Shaw B.REID* B.Johnson

C S.Burns N.BUCKLEY (c) D.THOMAS

INT P.Licuria S.SIDEBOTTOM* H.Lumumba S.O’BREE/T.Lockyer

O'Bree vs Lockyer depends if you want another mid or a flanker and again if you want to preference games played. Lumumba could also be in the mix to miss.

Burns on a wing isn't ideal, but I reckon it's better than a hbf where he rarely played in this time period.

It's a flip of the coin whether Thomas or Sidebottom starts on the other wing.

Would have Wellingham or lonie on a wing before Thomas lol.

Or what I would do is move Sidey to the wing where Thomas is. Move burns to the bench and have heath Shaw at back

.
Even an injured Reid is preferable to Wakelin, who was beaten by Alister Lynch in two grand finals (watch his twin brother on Lynch in the 2004 GF). While Ball was poor in the second half of the first 2010 GF, he made up for it in the GF replay and kicked the winning goal in the 2011 preliminary final against Hawthorn. Licuria and Lockyer were both superior to O'Bree who lacked the body size to go up against the Brisbane mids.

I get your point about Wakelin and agree those gfs weren't his best games, but an injured Reid is taking it too far. While we all want to forget the 2011 gf, an injured Reid got taken apart by Hawkins.

From the bench Licuria and Sidebottom weren't in my conversations for missing the side. In the case of O'Bree I'd personally go against the ops selection preferences and select Ball.

That leaves a choice between Lockyer and Lumumba for the last spot and if I had to choose it would be Lockyer. Reckon he's the better player plus with Maxwell and Clement in the side it's better for team balance.

Is it all about longevity? Or is it all about the out and out best player who may only have been great for a season?

This time around I'll treat it like a pickup game and go the best player based on their best individual year of performance:
B: Ben Johnson (2006) James Clement (2005) Leon Davis (2011)
HB: Heath Shaw (2011) Ben Reid (2011) Nick Maxwell (2009)
CEN: Steele Sidebottom (2014) Nathan Buckley (2000) Dale Thomas (2011)
HF: Alan Didak (2010) Travis Cloke (2011) Dayne Beams (2012)
F: Paul Medhurst (2008) Anthony Rocca (2003) Chris Tarrant (2003)
FOLL: Darren Jolly (2010) Scott Pendlebury (2011) Dane Swan (2010)
BENCH: Tarkyn Lockyer (2007) Scott Burns (2003) Josh Fraser (2006) Luke Ball (2011)

Apologies to: Harry O'Brien (2010) Nick Davis (2001) Paul Williams (2000) Alan Toovey (2012) Marley Williams (2014) Jamie Elliott (2014) Taylor Adams (2015) Shane O'Bree (2009) Paul Licuria (2003) Simon Prestigiacomo (2009) Shane Wakelin (2005) Nathan Brown (2015) Jack Crisp (2015).
