COLLINGWOOD, THE CULLERS

Have you got figures to back that up, it sounds a lot too high. It would mean every year they get rid of almost half their side, how & where did they get the 20 replacements each year.

Report from afl.com.au, via the herald sun.

IT SHAPES as one of the greatest clean-outs in recent AFL history.
Collingwood has farewelled 15 players since the end of the 2000 season and now has only four players left from 1997.
Captain Nathan Buckley, defender Scott Burns, forward Anthony Rocca and utility Mark Richardson are the only survivors from the Magpie line-up of three years ago.
The clean-out of the latest batch of 15, added to the 12 departures at this time last year, means that coach Mick Malthouse has turned over 27 players in little more than 12 months.
Adding the 13 taken off the list from the previous season makes it 40 in just over two years -- virtually a full senior list.
''It's been a big sweep,'' Magpies communication manager Robert Pyman said yesterday.
''Check the records and you probably won't find too many bigger ones in recent seasons. We cut deep last year, too.''
Collingwood yesterday sacked Mark Orchard, Shane Watson and Brad Oborne.
The number of delisted players now stands at 10. Pyman said all players had now been informed.
Three other players were traded and two have retired in the past few weeks.
Orchard, 24, played 18 games this year for a total of 86 in six seasons with Sydney and Collingwood.
Watson, 26, notched eight appearances this year for a career total of 141 in 10 seasons while youngster Oborne was used in just one senior game for a total of five.
Craig Jacotine, 20, who was delisted earlier this week, played two this year for a tally of 16.
Jacotine, along with Oborne, also 20, could attract interest in the national draft on October 29.

The article doesn't explain how they are going to get replacements for that may players, even with the draft & trades, it's still a hell of a lot of players.

I reckon they must have salary cap problems. Getting rid of 17 players, and taking into consideration that lists are culling back. Surely, they are not going to get 12 draft picks, so my only conclusion would be that they are going to play well below their playing list of 35. Does this sound like a possibility or am I off the wrong track...

There cutting the lists back next year too! And u have to remember that alot of the player we got rid of are dud players! Just that a look where Jason Wild is playing now!

I must say that I am a bit disappointed with Collingwood's recruiting and 'culling' over the last few years. It has been hard to be a Collingwood supporter since about 1996 when you see about 15 players a year depart. The realisation that Collingwood is three years off being a finals team is hard to take when we have been given the same line from the Rose and McGuire administrations for years.

Believe me, the Collingwood football club will pay with memberships next year. Don't be surprised if we have another big drop. I'll still buy my ticket but I doubt that Eddie and co can restore the faith of thousands of disenchanted magpie supporters.

Don't be so pessimistic!!
I guess you are only young and haven't seen us have a lot of success. Need I remind you that we have an exciting array of young talent - who improve with every game they play... Tarrant, Prestigiacomo, Kinnear, Nick & Leon Davis, Fraser, O'Bree, Scotland, Johnson, Licuria, Shaw, Lockyer, Ukovic...
and with new additions Brodie Holland, Clement, Molloy & Steinfort & 5 draft picks in the top 50 - we are on the right track with our rebuilding. We are an outside chance for the 8 this year & dead certs for a dynasty of success after that considering the youth of our list. They will all mature at the same time.. and we'll be up the top then.

Yes but you are missing the point. We have been using the same philosophy for years and it hasn't brought squat.

The list we have now we develop into a great list but I just think they have gone a bit overboard. For example, Brad Oborne only had two years to prove himself. He is a great prospect and dont be surprised that when he gets drafted to a different club that he goes on to be a star.

I'll wait until the draft and pre-season before I really pass a judgment but the club may be shocked if next year delivers similar results to the last 6 years.

Piefan: How can you leave Damien Adkins out of your list???? I don't agree with all the players you said were improving with every game but I won't go in to that because I have argued about it before.
