Collingwood - The Following (By Mags)

2001042701011515.jpg

There is no doubt what so ever that The Collingwood Football Club has the hugest following in The Afl. When we are winning it is even huger.

The talk at the moment is that Essendon have the biggest following in the competion, sure they have the highest membership figures in the Afl with 36,055 people as members, But how many of those fans are all loyal? I ask.

Collingwood currently has over 31,000 members (exact figure unknown) for this season and still growing as we make a progression towards the finals since season 1994. Of those 31,000 members we can say most are very much loyal towards this club of ours.

We have been down you know what creck since the early 90’s and now its all coming back in glory and our supporters all coming back too us.

Collingwood will supurs Essendon in the membership stakes for sure if we do very succesful and go well in this year’s season and finals system and hopefully a flag which would do this club wonders. We are a contender again, but us pie fans are not expecting a flag this year as we are still rebuliding and though it still wont suprise us as we have played some very good football this year.

The latest Roy Morgon survey has Sydney at the top of that list, nationwide, the Swans now have 500,000 more supporters than the next favourite AFL club is Essendon. Of those 1,289,000 people that so call, call themselves Swans fans, how many just reconsie the Swans name and how many on average go to the Sydney Cricket Ground too support there club? Only about 30,000 for the season 2001.

Collingwood on the other hand have been drawing crowds of just over 50,000 this season just under Essendon. Essendon will not be able to cop with another 10,000 members (which they think they can get) on top of the 36,000 they already have due to the restrictions brought upon by the Stadium they play at, Which is Colonial. It just cant happen, Football Park is sold out for the year for Crows matches and they wont take anymore members then it is and have a huge waiting list as does West Coast for there games at Subiaco Oval.

Collingwood’s smart thinking to stay/move to the Melbourne Cricket Ground will mean a much huger rise in attendances and membership figures.

But In All Honsety, Who Real Gives A Rats Arse About Essendon

We Are The Biggest Following And The Biggest Crowd Drawer In The Afl.

Hey Mags,

Damn fine post, save for imho you could have pushed the point that Collingwood is the greatest club in the nation just a wee bit more :D

Keep on practicing your writing skills Mags, they will develop over time. I can't imagine a better topic to be writing about than our Collingwood.

Go Pies,

Carol

Why are collingwood supporters pre occupied with this pretentious notion of how "Big" they are? Shouldn't they worry about winning games of football, and more importantly, those shiny cups they give out every september?

Mags,

Being a journo is all about bending the truth, and you have proven to be very good at doing that.

The main stat you seem to forget is the most important one

According to the Morgan poll, a few weeks ago, Essendon's Australia wide supporter base is 780,000 (approx), while Collingwood's is about 650,000

Essendon have more fans.

You Collingwood fans need to to stop talking about what you WILL do, and start talking about what you have done, or are doing. All we ever hear is: We are going to do this,", or "We are going to do that"

That would take too much away from their current rant

When will this pointless debate end?

Most AFL supporters do not support Essendon or Collingwood - they support one of 14 other clubs that between them have won more premierships than Essendon and Collingwood. To the supporters of other clubs Essendon and Collingwood are just other opposition teams to play.

Get over yourselves! The sooner Essendon and Collingwood supporters get over their mutual w@nk, the sooner the content of this board will improve.

Frankly, most AFL fans don't give (to borrow a phrase) a rat's tossbag! If Collingwood or Essendon folded, I would not miss them any more (or less) than Fremantle, Hawthorn or anyone else. You are simply not that important.

More intelligent words have surely never been spoken on this forum. Mind you, most of it is coming from the Collingwood side with their supporters needing something trivial to cling to for their brittle self esteems. Essendon supporters have generally had more significant things to keep themselves occupied with in recent years and probably only involve themselves in this nonsense to keep the Collingwood fools grounded. Still, it starts from the top, of course, and given what a clown Eddie McGuire is it is hardly surprising that a contingent of the magpie army should have their heads in lala land.

I find it interesting that we have Collingwood supporters telling others to get real and live in the present when so many of them get bogged down in the long ago past. Its like the premierships chestnut... Collingwood may have 14, but only one premiership cup, meaning that they have only won a single premiership in the era of professionalism. Not that it matters, of course, as the only one that matters is the current one...

Taking it a week at a time

LOL the good ol' green eyed monster again..great post mags, dont worry about Gump25, we all know he's full of sh*t anyway.

Mags just told us what we all know...even if you's all deny it, you know deep down its true!!! hahahaha

Now, Mags.

Why on earth would you want to pursue a career as dishonourable as journalism? It's a dirty, dirty game, Mags.

Why don't you get a nice clean job. Maybe you could be a hitman or something. Or a bank manager. Or perhaps you could be one of those guys that goes around evicting people from their homes.

Journalism!!!

Whatever next?

I know we've all gotta make a quid somehow ... but really. You gotta draw the line somewhere.

There has been some talk about the chest beating from Essendon and Collingwood fans regarding who has the most fans.

I am not "chest-beating" so much as I am stating the truth.

Essendon have a bigger Australia wide following than Collingwood. We have "roughly" 130,000 more fans than the Magpies. That's just the way it is. If it wasn't that way, I'd be the first to say so. It's not necessarily important who has the most fans, but I like to get the facts right.

The annoying thing is, Pie fans continue to spout crap like: "But we are down the bottom of the lader. Imagine what it will be like if we are winning premeirships?"

Well, we saw an example of Collingwood's crowd drawing capabilities in 1992 when they were equal top with 16 wins. Their crowds were "about" the same as Essendon's last year. We know what kind of crowds Collingwood gets when they are winning. They have been winners for "most" of their history. Mags wouldn't know because he is only 15, and doesn't know what it is like to support a successful Collingowod team.....yet.

A good example is to look at a Collingowood's crowd when they were at the top of the ladder. Let's look at Round 7 1997. Collingwood were playing Sydney on a Friday night at the MCG. Sydney were 5-1, while Collingwood were 4-2. It was first vs second. Collingwood were second on the ladder. The crowd was 57,894 - HUGE.

Four weeks later, Essendon played Sydney on a Friday night at the MCG. Sydney were 7-3 (but had just come off a 101 point loss to St.Kilda), while Essendon were 5-5. It was 3rd vs 8th. It was not really a big match. Essendon were struggling, and we were mediocre. The crowd was 62,866.

So, Collingwood played Sydney in a 1v2 match on a Friday night at the MCG and drew 57,894

Essendon played the same opponent on the same night (a Friday), in a 3rd vs 8th match and got 62,866.

The Morgan gallup poll a few weeks ago showed Essendon has got 780,000 fans to Collingwood's 650,000.

Essendon also have 36,227 members - more than Collingwood. I will admit however, that membership is not an accurate reflection of supporter base. A couple of years ago, Hawthorn had the most Victorian members, yet we all know they don't have the most fans. So, Essendon's membership on its own is not conclusive proof, but nevertheless, the figure is still there for all to see - 36,227.

the person above who put all this effort into some huge pointless article comparing Essendon to his own team ????

Hahaha. That's probably the only thing that they can compare, crowd sizes. Not premierships and talent on the field.

TT as an Essendon supporter, I couldn't care less how many people go to our games, its all about premierships. As Dave said, they're trying to compare themselves to us, which is flattering.
