I'd definitely like to keep Sidebottom. Aside from being a very good footballer who adds real quality to our midfield, I think he presents the right character for the type of culture that Bucks is wanting to build.

I live in the same area that Sidebottom hails from and was talking to the owner of the local AFL store (who is a Richmond supporter) a couple of years ago and he often tries to get players to come up and do signings particularly premiership players when all the premiership merchandise is out. He said they are typically very difficult to deal with, even the local boys, wanting appearance fees and making all sorts of demands. When the Pies won the premiership he spoke to Sidebottom who was only too happy to come up and brought one of the other boys (Wellingham I think from memory), wasn't worried about any fees or demands. The store owner reckoned he was the easiest and friendliest AFL footballer he had dealt with, and had had him back a few times since and had the same experience each time.

What other teams?
Sidebottom trading? He is one of the faces of the club. A lot of players had avg years. Wasn't Buckley under the impression that Sidey can make it to that elite level. And he is not that old. Keep him, too much changing of the guard otherwise. This is the time to form a nucleus, not to chop and change for a few % improvement

How would you view pick 4 from Essendon? I personally think they'd go for it.
Pick 4 has a chance to be as good as Sidebottom.

Too risky, would only contemplate trading him if we felt he would leave next year..

Sidebottom is the heart and soul of our team

Who is likely to be available and do they project as better players than Sidey? I think Id take a fair bit of convincing about taking on an 18yo and giving up Sidebottom. Wouldn't want to end up with a Fiora or Sampi.
I would bid on Mills with it, but come draft day I'd have my eyes on Curnow or Parish. Either way I'd be confident that our recruiting team would find a good footballer with it.

I get the impression we'd struggle to fit all of Aish, Broomhead and Sidebottom in our structure. But I wouldn't do it. Currently he is our best link up player and our best release player from defensive 50 as well as having strong offensive output. Neither Aish nor Broomhead has the endurance base to have that kind of effect all over the field.

Until we can find someone to replace and improve on what he offers, I wouldn't entertain it. Beyond that, I think Sidebottom as a pure midfielder is underrated since he spends so much time as an outside runner. He'll never be a strong clearance or inside player, but his ability to win the loose ball, then weave through traffic and congestion is underappreciated. I wouldn't mind playing him through the centre square a bit more if we can get others to help with his outside running workload.

Also from a personal note, I wouldn't want Sidebottom to go. He's one of my favourite players from the 2010 team. Would break my heart to see him go somewhere else.

Yeah and Bolton was on radio tonight saying they'd expect a 1st rounder for him. Please! The banter between Tigers and Blues fans will be interesting there.

Going to be a lot of first rounders traded this year if all the clubs initial claims are anything to go by.

So far today I've heard:

GC want two first rounders for both Dixon and Bennell
Carlisle for a first rounder
Aish for Hawks 1st
Lewis Jetta for WC 1st.

Even read that Bombers want a first rounder for Melksham. They are kiddding themselves.

Crazy time of year.
don't forget the blues would like to take the cats 1st for henderson

You're correct and there's also a chance Sidebottom could leave at the end of 2016 providing us with band 1 compensation or a pick circa 10-12 and 12 months of lost development.

I guess it depends on the risk level that the club is willing to take on.

Not surprised Kreuzer wants out. Carltanks subliminal message to him has basically been we want you to stay but if we can get band one compo you're expendable. Can see why he'd be looking at his options.

No way I want to see Sidebottom go. He's a champion and still can get better I think.

I remember when we drafted him and we were so happy. To get him and Beams in the same draft and to see how good both these guys became was rewarding for all involved.

We have to hold him long term, but we should also try and see what his intentions are post next season.

True, but then there's also the chance that Pendles will leave given that he is an unrestricted free agent next year (Sidebottom is a restricted free agent I believe, so if he did leave we could match the offer and force whoever he wants to move to to trade with us). If we are going to trade players on the basis they may leave because the will be free agents in the following season we'd have a lot of player movement each year, and to be honest shows that we are not confident in the environment that the club can provide to players.

The fact is Sidebottom is a key part of our future plans, I think we need to back in our ability to keep him (and any other 2016 free agent we are wanting to re-sign).

What is all this talk about trading Sidebottom? You people are off your heads. Class player who can kick both feet, heart and soul of club and a tremendous team man. These types don't grow on trees. With all these additions to the midfield, Pendlebury could go back to half back where Sidey spends a lot of time and be the distributor back there. Sidey could then go forward where I think he is at his most dangerous as a small, crumbing, goalkicking player that we desperately need. He can always get thrown into the middle as required. He would be far to clever for most backs.

If someone puts up a strong offer for him we should definitely strongly consider it. Had a very meh year, he is overrated by Collingwood fans.
Pretty general statements. What is a 'strong offer'? I don't know who overrates Sidebottom, but he is definitely a highly rated player, and rightly so.

Sidebottom is a good decision maker, a smart player, and a good user of the ball. He's also a premiership player with plenty of experience in a very young side. I don't think it overrates him to say that he's a required player.

He did have a 'meh' year, but he began well and was probably our best until he did his thumb.

I definitely would not want to lose sidebottom. He's entering his prime next season. But I've said all along players like sidebottom are the big beneficiaries of free agency. Worth 600-650 to us, is worth 800-900 to a club like Melbourne, essendon etc. It's hard money to turn down. So if the club genuinely thinks he's a serious chance of going, all avenues should be looked at this year.

But sidebottom is one player I would not want to lose under any circumstances. But I've got abit of a man crush on him, so tad biased!

Essendon is the side who I could see making a big play for Sidebottom as a free agent, a lot of their mids are getting on in age and they don't seem to have a lot of kids coming through. Although I think we'll see more players being traded a year out, unless we're certain Sidebottom's walking I'd hang onto him. He's the sort who could play well past 30, plus with reduced rotations and Sidebottom's high endurance the game could go his way.

Let's leave Pendles out of it because there's more chance of either of us captaining the club in 2016 than him leaving.

On the sentiment of potentially trading out players a year early there's types you consider it for and types you don't. Cloke, Swan and Pendles you don't because they come with their own level of importance, but Reid, Brown and Sidebottom types are prime candidates for ridiculous offers so you weigh up the pros and cons.

The supporter in me agrees with the general theme that it would be madness, but the analyst in me sees the merit of having the discussion.

Sidebottom won't even be in our best 4 midfielders in 2016, and our midfield is below average in the AFL.. how is he a champion? Great at getting lots of uncontested ball but his ball use is poor and rarely wins 1 on 1 contests

He did his thumb in round 1?

Yeah let's let our best outside mid go so we can bring in another inside mid.
How do you know our midfield is below average? I've never seen pendles, Trelaor, sidebottom, Swan, adams, crisp and Greenwood play together! Have you??

Don't have a cow - it's just a pro's and con's discussion.
