Greater Western Sydney are hunting for an experienced ruckman, which appears to be an indication that all is not well with their injured man-mountain Shane Mumford.
The Giants have contacted at least two clubs and several player agents regarding trading in a big man, and their search has so far involved contracted Western Bulldogs ruckman Will Minson and Sydney’s back-up ruckman Tom Derickx.
GWS will also sound out Geelong free agent Dawson Simpson, who has been restricted throughout his career by injuries.
It is believed the Giants are offering above market value to both clubs and players in their attempt to lure an experienced big man.
Mumford, one of the driving forces in the Giants’ rise in the first half of the season when they won seven of their first 10 games, broke down in round 11 and required surgery that brought a premature end to his season.
The 28-year-old Sydney premiership player had his left ankle reconstructed after being hurt against Collingwood. He had a deltoid ligament repaired and coach Leon Cameron suggested his rehabilitation could take up to six months.
However, the GWS best-and-fairest winner last year in his first season with his third club, could be under a fitness cloud as to when, or indeed if, he will be available to resume training.
Minson, an All-Australian in 2013, was in and out of the Bulldogs’ line-up this year with 10 senior games, but was recalled for their elimination final loss to Adelaide.
The Dogs have already delisted ruckman Ayce Cordy, leaving them only Minson, Tom Campbell, who played six games this season, and pinch-hitter Jordan Roughead to play in the ruck.
Derickx played only one game this season for the Swans, bringing his career total to 15 games over four years with Richmond and Sydney.
The Giants played all three developing ruckmen this year — Tom Downie (seven games), Rory Lobb (nine) and Andrew Phillips (four) — but the trio appeared to be in need of support from a more seasoned big man. Phillips will probably be traded to Carlton with several other teammates including Lachie Plowman later this month.
Gold Coast ruckman Zac Smith is not on the Giants’ radar as he will this week nominate either Geelong or possibly Essendon as his club of choice before a trade deal is worked out.
Neither is Brisbane free agent ruckman Matthew Leuenberger, who is tossing up whether to cross to Essendon or Sydney. Leuenberger’s manager, Paul Connors, said yesterday his client would make his decision within the next 10 days.
Meanwhile, rejected Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell appears poised to return home to Western Australia and join Fremantle after failing to impress Richmond last week.
The Tigers said several factors influenced their decision not to offer him a contract but would not elaborate following several meetings with club officials and players last week.
Bennell, who is under contract with the Suns for two more years, was sacked following a series of off-field indiscretions involving the use of illicit drugs and alcohol.
