Preferred position regardless. Past/recent history regardless. I view him as a very good ruck prospect and an ok tall forward prospect. I'd be surprised if his best footy is played anywhere other than in the ruck.
Oh, well in that case of course he is a ruck prospect. Because some randoms on the internet view him that way. Don't worry about the reality of what position he actually plays. My mistake.

Where was all this "We should of picked Wright" talk on draft day? Or for that matter, this time last year?

Not a dig at you specifically but there are a lot of voices in the Wright camp that were in the Degoey, Laverde, Langford camps not too long ago.
Wasn't overly keen on Wright on draft night and I'm still not. I don't believe he's what we need in our set up because, IMO, we get a bit big with him, Moore and Cox in the line up (I think Cox will be a lock when fit and American politicians aren't in town in 2017). Wright's going to be a ripper, but I don't think he's for us. Either way I'm just glad I've seen enough of him to know he's as much a ruckman as Witts is a forward lol.

What I believe we need is a complimentary KPF like Gunston work works up the field creating space in behind. The three on that front that stand out to me were/ are M McGovern, McCarthy and Thomlinson. That's why I'm still a little shitty we went with Freeman in 2013, why we should be into Thomlinson this year and I'd be sniffing around McGovern.

Agree on that.
But just to annoy some posters, next year Nathan will get nice results, we'll go up a spot or two and he'll get another extension.

If nothing else it will irritate a whole bunch of posters.
I seriously seriously doubt that. If we go up two spots we play finals. If we don't he's gone the club won't re-sign him with a further missed finals series.

Given he's making finals to get the new contract why would anyone be irritated? They're currently pissed off because we're mediocre not because they dislike Buckley.

I said this in another thread but do you think Scharenberg could potentially play that Gunston type role?

It might be considered, but not for mine.

I don't think he covers the ground well enough to play forward permanently. He's a special talent when it comes to reading the ball in flight and has the potential (dirty word) to be an elite general defender because his ball use and decision making are top drawer whilst he doesn't quite have the same high level forward traits.

His return does open it up for Howe to go forward if we fill the hole from within and Oxley was used I50 on the weekend, but I'd look externally myself.

I reckon Ben Ainsworrh could play the Gunston. Kid has some serious talent. Only 179cms. He wasn't used much in the middle during the carnival. He played up forward pre-domientely. I would describe a lead-up Jake Stringer but much bigger already. If I could get one bloke this off season( who was obtainable) it would be him.

He'll go top 5; top 10 absolute minimum. Unfortunately out of reach. He's pretty much another make of Jamie Elliott, he's too much shorter and doesn't play in a third tall role like Gunston.

I think a lot of people will be plesantly suprised about Witts? And what other teams are willing to give for him. I still believe a first rounder is possible depending on supply and demand. Have heard Lions and Dogs are keen and who knows if anyone else will throw there hat on the ring
Cloke not sure? Could go from one extreme to another, Williams 20 to 30 i guess? Comment guys?
imagine if we got pick 14 out of the dogs, but I think more likely pick 20 from Brisbane would be the best we could get.

I don't see any club interested in Williams

I don't think witts will go to Brisbane to be honest. He isn't gonna go to a bottom four team. I think he"ll end up at the Richmond
again. They seem the most keen for a ruckman. He's a Sydney boy. Even though he's stated he doesn't want to leave Victoria. If he does, it will be back home I reckon. So GWS is still a chance.

Ideally he goes to Richmond, and we somehow manage to get s first round pick. Unlikely that we get their top 10 pick. So whatever compensation they get for Deledio should be our target.

Side note, I'll do Houli, swap of picks for witts.

^^ I take that back. Didn't realise he was 28.

Josh Battle has slipped outside the top 20 according to Twomey on the AFL site
If that is true, he is getting very close to our 2nd round pick
That's what I suggested in the replacing Cloke thread, the demand for key forwards is low this year and I think there is a good chance he lands at our 2nd pick. If not, Patrick Kerr is a more than capable key forward and would certainly be available.

Yep and De Goey is a small forward prospect, won't play his best footy in the midfield.

What's Ed Langdon worth in comparison to say Marley Williams? Don't know much about him to be honest.

I do rate Marley, but you'd have to say Ramsay and Sinclair are both past him... when they're on the park.
Marley for Langdon and a swap of 3rd rounders. Marley is a walk up start for Freo and will be one of their better defenders if his form gets back to what it was.

I think the key difference here is that one of them (Wright) looks a genuine star in the role he currently fills (forward) and the other (JDG) looks a plodder in the role he currently fills (forward).

It's just a given that JDG will move through the midfield with time amd will thrive when he does, but there's no reason whatsoever to throw Wright through the ruck because he's just not that good in the role. The funny thing is your comparison would work if Wright was being played in the ruck currently.

Wright played his u18 year predominantly as a key forward with stints through the ruck as a backup. His preferred position is forward. He is currently playing as a forward and backup ruck. He is a forward first and foremost. His ability to pinch hit in the ruck is completely irrelevant. You're way off the mark.
Just have to disagree. He's a Kreuzer all over.
