Does anyone remember the great comeback of the Pies against Richmond at Waverley (1987- Round 4 I think- Easter).

We were trailing by 51 points late into the third quarter (39 points down at three quarter time) and won by 10 points. BT went bezerk in the last quarter after being benched and finished with 6. Graeme Atkins kicked the goal to put us in front.

Collingwood and Richmond weren't the greatest of teams but I would highly recommend getting your hands on the tape to witness the amazing comeback.

The main point of all of this is that this comeback is never mentioned when the topic is being discussed. Richmond were 51 points down on the weekend against Hawthorn and won. Everyone was suitably impressed with the effort. The Pies were 51 point down late in the third quarter- I reckon this must rate as one of the best comebacks ever.

I remember the game well.

I am a Fitzroy supporter, but had a few mates who were both richmond and Collingwood supporters. I had done my arse at the races on the Saturday, and decided to make the trek to Waverley to watch the game.

It had it all. Arrogant Richmond supporters, acting like they all do when their side is winning. Had to admit it was quite funny watching the looks on the Collinwood supporters when the Tigers kept piling it on. Niither side was very goos that year, but like every side each groupl of supporters had their favorites.

The game had quite a bit of feeling, mainly because it was only a few years since the brain damaged recruiting wars between Collingwood when big names at the time like Geoff Raines, david Cloke, Phillip Walsh and John Annear swapped sides.

As we know Collingwood went berzerker in the last quarter, and it was too funny watchin g the faces of the Tiger Army watch their massive lead whittled away.

The mate I went with was so annoyed by the result that he cracked it and said that he wouldn't get in the car with any fwit Collingwood supporters. As a mate I stood by him, and we walked from Waverley to Moorabbin.

Great story- fair bloody walk too!

I was lucky enough to be there and sprinted on the ground after the game and in the process (I think of jumping the fence) lost my wallet. I was so excited that I didn't really care. A week or so later- some nice person who found the wallet contacted me and I got it back.

That last quarter sent shivers down my spine. The old bus trip back to Nunawading was magnificent.

The game had some great names: Rioli, Lee, Weightman, Cloke, Rizonico, Fielke and a young emerging champ in G.Brown. David Palm through a great left hook to Clokey's face.

It was Terry Keays first game.

We have had a number of comeback games.

The best comeback from a half time deficit is Coll v StK 1970. 21-74 and we won 108-101.

In 1978 at the ten minute mark of the third qtr v Richmond we were 1 1 7 to 9 8 62 and we ended u winning by 4 goals.

Against Footscray in 1978 we were well down at half time (36 pts and 37 pts down at 3/4 time and we got up by 4 pts.

Against RIchmond in 1968 we were 27 points down at the 20 minute mark of the last qtr and got up to win by three points 118-115.

As a Richmond supporter I remember it only too well sadly. :o My recollection was that BT hadn't had much of the ball all day and just before 3/4 time he started a punch on and got the free kick which he duly converted. That was when you were 51 points down I think. Taylor went on to boot 6 goals and when Atkins(?) kicked the goal that put in in front deep into the last qtr, my Collingwood supporting mate that I went with sprung out of his seat punching the air in ecstasy only to collect me under the chin which his clenched fist nearly knocking me out - well bringing tears to the eyes at least. Good thing was they already disguised the tears that I already had welling up after watching us loose the unloosable game. This game was one or two weeks before the infamous game with Tony Jewell pulling his hair our in the coaches box after we pulled a similar feat against the Swans lead by W. Capper.
