What was the Trade?

I agree with all of your recent posts on this. Wish Dayne all the best but his whole contract situation is hindering us greatly. The whole mental health thing complicates it but we are in essence paying big bucks for nothing. I know he could have done a knee etc and still be on the sidelines but at least they would still be at the club rehabbing etc. When was the last time he was even at the club (pre COVID).

A settlement would still be placed under the cap but we need to make that a priority and move on. I wonder what Dayne’s incentive is to accept a settlement though and not just stay at home getting paid for the next 2 years.

I feel like any person who had involvement in getting him back to the club on this trade/4 year deal should be looking for alternate employment.

I really think some list management decisions have cost Collingwood a better shot at a flag in recent years and maybe the next few.

Beams - Horrendous trade. Basically gave up 2 x 1st rounders for him and wasted valuable salary cap space over 4 years for absolutely zero return. Annoying thing from a fans perspective is the club not doing due diligence (pretty sure his depression and gambling issues were known) or did but traded for him anyway, and another mid like Beams isn't even something the team desperately needed with Pendles/Sidebottom/Treloar/Adams etc.

Wells - I recall the club justified it saying the team needed more experience and leadership and he admittedly he did have some good games. But wasn't good value given he missed a lot of games through injuries (no surprise) and ultimately didn't seem like a contract that was necessary. Instead, other contracts could have been front-ended to free up space.

Mayne - Not the complete disaster it was looking like after his first year as he at least has been a part of the best 22 and made a contribution...but again $500k over 4 years was way overs and ultimately his role could have easily been filled by a far cheaper player. If you're going to poach a player from another team for that kind of contract you want more than Mayne provides.

Those 3 trades were unnecessary and have cost precious salary cap space and draft picks (particularly Beams) that could have been used to address areas of weakness like recruiting a key forward. Cameron & Brown are available but can Collingwood afford them? It might even lead to them losing one of their best current forwards in Mihochek.

Also, did the club really need to extend Treloar's contract for 5 years on big money when he's 27 this year? His contract takes him to 32 and plenty of players decline even at 30. You typically see even gun players on 1-2 year contracts from 30 onwards. If it's true they are trying to offload him and his contract, despite recently re-signing him to a long-term deal that's pretty poor list management.

Yep. Couldn’t agree more. All disastrous list management decisions. The Grundy 7 year deal may also be shown to be a shocker too unless he can vastly improve his connection with our midfielders.

is he 100% off the Books?
Hasn't been revealed yet, the details will be sorted out soon, but we are getting some pretty decent relief regardless, just a matter of %, and whether AFL approves it to be outside the cap.

Talk going around we are having a Crack at Angus Brayshaw

You have only just managed to get rid of Beams and don't know yet how much extra that cost. Keen for another go?

Wright is another version of Cox, who you already have.
It’s the risk we have to take. We need to get some Kew forwards to have a chance at a flag. At his best Hogan is a star. Wright is a greater athlete than Cox is also 5 years younger, a lot more upside

Cox is 31 so has not many years left at all

There is that chance but he will come cheap, there is also the chance he turns it around

He has known application issues as well as a damaging lifestyle. Do you not remember that video of him pinging off his face, no pants dancing like a zombie in the santa claus suit?

Even Fevola would be saying "damn kid, you gotta get your s**t together".

No different to what most AFL players get up to

Collingwood have really made some poor decisions over the past few years in terms of their list and TPP. Unusual given they had a great record in these areas.

Trading Dayne Beams back in on such a healthy contract and giving up the draft capital they did was weird at the time and has been disastrous in hindsight. His issues were known so they don't have a get out there. Probably one of the worst contract - output ratios in the history of the game.

Giving Mason Cox a contract that allowed him to trigger $550k p/a is simply s**t business. It looks even worse when you have someone who is probably their best forward in Mihocek stuck on the rookie list, seemingly unable to be paid and running the risk of being lost to the club.

Now you've got a bloke in Adam Treloar who is on monstrous money and a long termer, who the club is reportedly actively pushing out / applying pressure to. It's speculation at this point, but if they have back ended his deals and extended him to stretch it out because they were having cap issues and now want him gone because they haven't been able to minimise those issues, it is poor business at a minimum but also fairly unethical IMO.

What the hell is going on there?
