I thought with all the negativity flying around here, I would point the finger at the real culprit in our three loses, our forward line, and more so our goal kicking accuracy.

You can see clearly the disparity between our accuracy in our wins and our losses.

Now as to why this is happening.

Movement of the ball;
We still move the ball around the boundary more then any other team (I don't care what a heat map says) and that leads to more shots at goal from near the boundary.

Young developing forwards;
Dawes, Anthony, MaCaffer, Beams, Sidebottom are all still very raw and inexperienced, and this has also lead to a lack of a "real" target.

Injuries;
No Brad Dick, really No Leon Davis since about round 2, and Medhurst continues to get injured also. These are our 3 most reliable kicks as small forwards IMO, and it has hurt us having them out.

HOW TO FIX IT;

Short Term;
Not a lot we can do, MM is set in his ways, we play more direct against the lesser sides, but against the top sides we still hug the boundary. Leon, Dick and Meds are still a few weeks away from the seniors too, and Dawes and Anthony need more time to develop.

Long Term;

A FULL TIME GOALKICKING COACH.
Who is given time after training to go through a process with each of our forwards, ranging from the talls to the smalls, and get each of them a set routine that they practice after every training session.

TIME; Dawes and Anthony are bloody accurate kicks, but still need more time to find consistency and confidence at AFL level.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

While the list has other problems, our forward line has cost us at least 2 wins IMO, and maybe 3 (I still believe Geelong would have beaten us though).

Time for some thought and "innovation", because if we continue down this path, 2010 will be another frustrating year in Black and White.

Thoughts?:confused:

I think i found a solution.

I'd be very interested to see our set shot accuracy for most of these games, because my impression is that our set shot accuracy as a percentage would be fairly consistent, however in the games in which we've been beaten, we simply haven't had any.

The quality of our forward entries in these games has been poor, because we've bombed the ball in and we haven't had the patience to find an option inside 50m. If we've had a scoring shot as a result it's normally a rushed shot by someone on the end of a chain of handballs, under pressure, and then usually only after beating the odds and retaining the ball from a contest in which we've been outnumbered.

I think we need to be more patient when we're clearly outnumbered going forward. Particularly if we're set in stone to be going by way of the boundary. We need guys like Medhurst back and firing, I think we should recall Dick once fit, and seriously look at Luke Rounds who reminds me (in player type) of Nick Davis. Guys who can find space inside 50m, be spotted up, and convert 4 times out of 5. Scoreboard pressure is just as important, if not moreso, than tackling pressure... and in the big games vs. Geelong and St. Kilda, we've had none to speak of.

We also need to improve on our shit-down defence, because when we do miss we hand possession back to the opposition, and when we've struggled against the better teams they've been smart enough to deny us the ball. I don't think we necessarily need to drop Anthony, but we went into the Brisbane game with at least one too many midfielders and we're probably better balanced if Medhurst can come in. If we consider Dawes as a part-time ruck, which is an option I'm fence-sitting on currently, then we could drop Wood and bring in Dick/Rounds as a secondary small forward who can mark and convert... as well as do the ground-level stuff and provide heaps of pace and pressure.
