BEN COUSINS may have stolen the show, but for Collingwood debutant Dayne Beams, it was his moment to shine under the lights at Telstra Dome.

“It was good to get the first one out of the way, it was fantastic being out there with the boys and hopefully earning some respect,” Beams said after the match.

The 19-year-old started on the bench but was soon called into action with his heavily tattooed arm and two goal assists in the first quarter capturing the attention of the 37,121 fans.

Beams highlight from the night was a 45m goal in the second quarter, which brought a smile to the young Queenslander and to many of the Magpie faithful.

“I didn’t think I could kick it that well but it came off the boot alright,” he said.

“It was good to get that one out of the way as well.”

His creativity was again on show in the final quarter with a clever tap-on under pressure opening space for Alan Toovey to run in and stretch the margin beyond the Tigers reach.

While Beams has tasted senior football at Southport last year, the No.29 draft pick at the 2008 NAB AFL Draft said he was still coming to terms with the pace of the AFL level.

“The bodies are very similar, but the tempo was a lot quicker and that is something I’ll have to get used to,” he said.

The recent retirements of former captain Scott Burns and tough tagger Brodie Holland has the tough midfielder eager to grab a spot in the heart of the Collingwood midfield in the coming years.

“I’m just happy to be out there. Half-forward is fantastic and hopefully soon I’ll be able to push in the midfield when I get a little bit more experience,” he said.

“I’ve just got to keep working hard and hopefully things come my way.”

No. 25 JACK REDDEN
(Glenelg) 17, 188cm, 74kg

They took the kid who missed the winning shot with 10 seconds left last night, he looked ok, but seemed over awed, yet Beams seemed to fit right in.

brissy took jack redden at 25, north took sam wright at 27, adelaide shaun mckernan at 28, then beamsy
Yeah decided to not be so lazy and check it myself

Redden is the same size and style player as beams, strange brisbane didnt take the hometown boy looking at just basic stats. Better for us in any end.

Redden Vinnie/TRS/FIGJAm good, very good, bad? prefer beams? etc

hes kicking was very good , apart from one which was just a bomb inside 50 when no one was there , hes goal was lovely and he done a huge bump on mcmahon i think

Can someone tell me how many seconds there were left before he kicked the ball randomly to no one?

Beams has a really confident look about him, like Pendlebury. Well built too.
I watched beams and He does remind you a bit of pendles

Explain these terms to me please? I'm not sure if I've got the concept of these word correct.
High workrate - Gets more of the ball, but is less damaging with it. Dane Swan, Rhys Palmer, Bradd Dalziell.

Impact player - Gets less of it but is more damaging, and doesn't need a heap of the ball to impact the game. Dale Thomas etc. Beams isn't obviously an out and out impact player as Thomas is though.

That's how I interpreted it anyway. Redden will win more of the ball, but Beams needs less of it to effect a game.

Thanks for that.:thumbsu:

IIRC wasn't Beams a ball magnet in the league he played in prior to being drafted?
