Knowing that if we keep playing like lemons, we may have a good shot at a high pick - heaven forbid that we trade it away for someone - what kind of play do you think Melbourne should invest in?

Should we go for the best young ruckman in the market or should we go for a bonafide Full back (just in case Bate doesn't fit the bill)?

thoughts?

i would be going for a Young ruckman high in the draft - we will need some definate quality to replace Jeff WHite - not sure Jamar or Johnson could take that next step...

I reckon a quick goalkicking midfielder and perhaps a ruck or a strong-bodied defender. Personally I think PJ can be our no.1 ruck in a few years.

i wouldve tohught very different to some of you. i wouldve tohught a tough defensive midfielder that can tag, not a quick goal kicking midfielder like bruce, green, johnstone...

These are 5 names that will be in contention come draft time. Obviously the likes of Marc Murphy, Ellis etc. will have been taken before we get our first pick which looks to be around pick 8. There are many tall players that would be looked at. I went to several u18 championship matches and these are only mu opinion. This is not in any order.

1.Nathan Jones: A very nuggety, shaved head, solid midfielder with a big tank due to his background in traithlons. Hard at it. 177cm 84kg.

2.Cleve Hughes: Played for SA and he is about 192cm and is extremely quick and agile for a tall kid. Named at CHF in u18 AA team.

3. Marcus Drum: 190cm, 82kg kid that plays half back flank. Plays for murray bushrangers. I dont know that much about him though.

4.Travis Varcoe:179cm, 72kg midfielder from the central districts.

5.Matthew Spangher: 193cm, 84kg kid from the eastern rangers. Plays centre-half back and is very accountable for his player whilst taking calcualted risks. Is very quick and is willing to run the lines and take on players streming out of defence.

72 KG and 179 CM, Varcoe sounds way 2 weak, we need strength. Nathan Jones however sounds like he could be usefull.

2 be honest i hope we trade our first pick for like a bartel or hay cos we have Dunn and Bate coming though.

if Dunn and Bate decided to not go into the draft last year and be in the draft this year where would they go u reckon? top 10?

Not a chance in hell would we use a first round draft pick for Hay! he is worth about a late 3rd rounder at best. he is 27 years old and in 2 years time will be starting to lose form. I think we need to pick up guys with good foot skills because I think we have so many bad kicks in our side that it is costing us big time. The best field kick fr Vic Metro was probably Richard Douglas but he will most likely be picked up around the 20-40 range.

How about a full forward?
Do they still get drafted, or do you have to turn Ruckmen or CHB's into FF's.
We should look for players who can kick goals, and have proven so, ie. TAC leading goal kicker.
Replacement for Neitz, 2-3 years.

We have Smith (longshot), Dunn and Newton to groom for the FF role - not sure it would be a good idea to get a gun *unless somehow Beau Dowler doesn't get taken early*

i'd still rather Hay down back with Fergy and Bizzell and Rivers

fergy dun have the body to take on Hall, Gerhig etc, neither does Carroll. Nicho does but doesnt have the skill and 2 be honest, neither does Fergy or Carroll or Rivers (but that will change i hope)

well thank the lord you are't our recruiting manager. Quick fix players are not the answer and I wouldnt even offer a top 10 pick for Fraser Gehrig. yes he is good at the moment but he isnt going to be around for much longer.
