Just trying to think of another topline current ruckman with Moore's somatotype. His game is all about speed and athleticism but the "Centre Circle" and the "line across the middle" have robbed tall athletic rucks of their natural advantage (a run up). Think of his dad, think of Mark Lee and Jeff White, the time of the long run up and the enormous leap has gone. The circle and the line have bred strong, bullocking ruckmen who stand under the contest and protect their mids space. Moore would have his athleticism stymied at boundary throw ins as well because as Mason Cox pointed out in his podcast this morning, the bullocks engage even before the ball is thrown in.

Putting the skipper in the ruck would be giving oppo teams the chance to crush him within the rules.
Paddy Ryder did alright as an undersized athletic ruck

If we were to move Moore then it's FWD not Ruck.
He could be elite as a KPF, now that he's no longer the scrawny kid who played there previously.
I’d back him to be the only ruckman capable of winning a Brownlow in the league if he moved in there, but I don’t trust his hamstrings, and he’s already very carefully managed, so it’s a hard no from me.

Rather than it being about the circle advantaging the bullocks, I think it's simply that ruck is no longer considered as important as it once was. The fantastic ruck prospects with agility and athleticism who are strong in the air play forward or back, as those roles are considered more important. In today's game, if you can play forward like Peter Moore could, you're not getting shifted into the ruck. And his son who is such an incredible defender sure as hell won't either.

i'd like to see pete frampton get a chance to get a long term injury in the ruck before darcy....then i'd like see will kelly get a go in the ruck. I know he might be undersized but I think he would appreciate being in the game all the time.

Ryder was drafted 18 years ago. Talls have gotten significantly taller in that time.
Sure. And Darcy Moore is a relatively slender 203cms, so players of his size and dimensions ought to be fine.

To argue that there are no athletic ruckmen around is just silliness.

Paddy Ryder always played as a ruckman, juniors through to seniors. Moore is a key defender, Ryder was a ruckman.
Moore was a CHF, Kicked a couple in a winning GF team for the Oakleigh Chargers.

Yes we are needing him as a defender now. If someone capable comes along we can swing him to CHF once again.
We wouldn't need to splurge big bucks on a Ben King.

I'd rather try and get Toby Greene or someone similar.
Another defender as well.

And there never were lots of Darcy Moore-like ruckmen

Sometimes, flags are won by a team that goes against the trend.
