Everyone has a movie, book or in this case comic that once they've read that really sticks with them forever and influences how they read other books.
For me that book was the Death of Gwen Stacy, which I read a reprint of when I was about 16.
Even though the story was over twenty years old when I read it and the art and dialogue were dated, I couldn't believe how dark it was, despite the 70's deco. I mean Spider-man accidently kills his girlfriend then walks out on his best mate, Harry, who's tripping out on LSD, then he fights the Green Goblin to the death, goes home and has a nervous breakdown.
I was totally gripped and pretty much everything I read now gets compared to this masterpiece...
