Age is no barrier as Tassie Roo Mitch Hibberd looks to AFL debut

“AGE is no excuse” is the new motto coming out of North Melbourne after last season’s clean-out, and it could see Tasmanian Mitch Hibberd lining up for his AFL debut.

The 20-year-old has impressed in the first two JLT Community Series games, especially in Sunday’s win over Hawthorn, where he collected 25 assured touches across half-back.

With the loss of Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Michael Firrito, Daniel Wells and Nick Dal Santo, spots are up for grabs.

“There are a lot more young guys around the club, so it does feel completely different to last year,” Hibberd said back in Hobart for the Roos community camp.

“Age isn’t an excuse and we can’t put any expectations on what we can do this year.

“Everyone has put it on each other to step up ... so everyone is pushing pretty hard and training hard.

“Everyone knows there are opportunities there and it has made for a pretty competitive pre-season.”

In his first season, Hibberd learned his trade in the VFL playing for Werribee, and said 12 months on he was a vastly different player to the one who landed from Clarence.

“Probably just knowing the game plan, knowing the structures and being a lot more confident with all that sort of thing,” he said.

“I just feel like I can play footy a bit more as the structure just happens as opposed to thinking about it so much. You can concentrate on playing footy and it comes a bit more natural.”

Hibberd is sharing a house with midfielder Ryan Clarke and North’s new cult hero, 109kg ruckman Braydon Preuss, who kicked three goals against the Hawks.

“He’s always up and about. He’s a good character to live with, never a dull moment,” Hibberd said.

“He does eat a fair bit, he’s a big boy.”

Good to see the kangaroos hitting hawk territory doing clinics in schools in northern tassie, today they are at bridport whitch is my boys school on the nth coast (home of barnbougle dunes/lost farm),although the Hawks have the bulk of the support around here there's plenty of kangas jumpers at footy training and many like us travel the 3 and a bit hours to watch the boys in Hobart, well done kangaroos.

Well, didn't expect this...

Makes complete sense to me. He thought Boomer and Spud were serial stagers. Spud a fake tough man and Boomer selfish who was a crap leader.

I unfollowed him eventually because he genuinely loves the smell of his own farts, like that other flog Paul Roos. Just takes potshots at everyone thinking he could do a better job at everything without actually putting up his hand and taking on responsibility.

Imagine if we took him as coach after Brad gives it away after 2018...

A run down of North in the new Herald Sun Footy 17 magazine: Robbo says we will win 8 or 9 games and finish 17th? He also says Ahern can add some outside class this season, twice, so not a typo. Kingy says he will be suprised if we win 7 games and tips us to finish 16th? No one sees us making the 8 or doing anything of significance. Also Kingy's player relative ratings get a workout. Farcical analysis. Anyways, just saved you all $5 (I just read my old man's so I didn't part with any coin either).
