Was listening to SEN earlier this evening and nearly drove off the road. Some bloke was on with Schwarz and Mark Allen (didn't catch who it was). They were discussing the umpiring and how diabolical it was. They essentially went through each decision and were laughing at how bad each one was, including the Waite mark/free kick against and Swallow being decapitated when standing on the mark. Everything they said seemed fair enough... until this bloke pipes up saying that Jarrad Waite and Andrew Swallow (yes, our captain) are both typically guilty of accentuating contact and always going to ground far too easily, thus making life difficult for the umpires.

Umm... WHAT?

I thought he was quite entertaining and showed his personality. More than you can say for most of the recent winners, with the exception of Cooney.
His parents don't like his hair, he learned how to play football from the Mortons and he took a book to bed. Fascinating stuff. I was riveted.

Most overrated Brownlow speech ever is what it really was.

Can someone tell me why the media is gushing over Fyfe's Brownlow speech? Seemed pretty stock standard to me.
He handled it with humility, class, demonstrated intelligence and he was entertaining as well as amusing. It's a rare mix in footballers that get to the level that Fyfe has reached.

It's quite good actually. Sorry if I don't get my jollies because a footballer can string two words together.

How ******* low must the bar be set when a media trained footballer talks it's called the Greatest Brownlow Speech Ever.

something is wrong with you if you don't think for a young man to get up and speak like that in front of a crowd, with such poise after such an adrenaline filled night, is impressive

I've never seen a Brownlow winner not act with humility.

You are easily pleased.

He is hardly Kayne Turner straight out of high school. Players are media trained to within an inch of their lives. Look at the way Ziebell was talking after draft day.

It was certainly cringeworthy from Bruce but Fyfe handled Bruce's exuberance with grace and eloquence. It would have been easy to fall into the Channel 7 schtick and pander to the masses but Fyfe resisted and actually managed to engage in some tasteful banter himself.

Other winners have acted with with humility on stage, but often to the point where it comes across as almost false modesty and quite disingenuous. Fyfe's words about it being a Fremantle award and recognising the work his team mates do so he can play a slightly more selfish role seemed genuinely sincere.

Almost fell of my chair when I watched On the Couch just before. They showed a graphic on screen of the top 20 picks from the 2009 Draft, highlighting the poor choices many clubs made by not picking Fyfe. Jonathan Brown was asked who the standout players were pre-pick 20. His response?

"Dusty Martin definitely the standout. Oh and Brad Sheppard from the Eagles has really improved this year, so those two are the picks for mine, definitely"

I know the bloke has half a brain left but jesus.

Cunners' name was jumping off the screen demanding a mention, seeing he's won a B&F and helped lead the team to back to back prelims, all while showing elite clearance numbers. Nup

DR, you've dropped your stick again. You'll find it lodged in the mud.
