North Melbourne coach Brad Scott has declared any thought of tanking would have a detrimental effect, rather than a positive impact on a club’s culture.
The Roos are equal last with the Brisbane Lions, with their Round 23 clash at the Gabba possibly likely to decide the wooden spoon and who gets the No.1 draft pick.
He said managing the list just to move up a couple of spots in the draft order would leave future scars.
“If you’re tempted to even think about managing your list to influence draft position then that leaves more scars on your football club, than potential upside for a draft pick one or two positions better,” Scott told
SEN Breakfast.
Scott is adamant the competition does not need a lottery system to determine the number one pick, however he believes that the AFL may introduce it in the future, in order to remove any discussion.
“Personally I don’t think we need it,” he said.
“But with all the conversation around it, maybe the AFL in the long term think let’s just remove any discussion so we’re not talking about it.
“Where we’re concerned the talk I think is laughable. I felt like putting our doctor up in the press conference yesterday and getting him to answer the questions as to who we had available and who we didn’t.”
He admitted that while he thought a lottery would be perfect for the situation the team is in this year, the club’s aim is to win their last five games.
“In our personal situation I would like a lottery this year, because we intend to win the next five games,” he said.
“That’s our target. If we get rewarded for winning those games in a lottery situation that’s great.”
