must be a slow news day if Chief Footballer Reporter is doing a news piece on a former umpire from last decade that very few would give a toss about
Dunno. A former umpire systematically defrauding their employer feels like a real big check under the carpet moment for the AFL. They would be shitting bricks.

Agree. And those stats of his in the 2016 GF make it look a bit dodgy

wasn't the AFL's fault though in this instance, right?
Obviously not, but any rational party would be sitting there right now wondering: if there was dodgy stuff going on after his time with us... They would be insane to not be considering the possibility and the implications.

It is impossible to comprehend or to believe that umpire stats aren't examined with a great deal of scrutiny after each game to assess if there is any degree of imbalance or bias, both in context of the events that caused free kicks to be paid (or not) during the game and in isolation from a purely statistical analysis. There would also be a case for analysis of the deviation in decisions between umpires officiating in the same match.

Not all lop-sided results would be due to erroneous decision making, but equally, not all balanced results would be due to even-handedness.

A lot of money is tied up in media contracts, sponsorships, payments to players and officials, gambling and of course, the capital and expenses involved in hosting games nationwide for half the year. Even the most minor aberration detected in statistical analysis or match-day observations ought to be scrutinised with the utmost diligence.

And any adverse findings ought in no way be hidden from the public.

I agree with all of that - but it doesn't mean that this shouldn't be a huge wake up call for the AFL.

Oh I'm with you on that, 100%.

I think they have been negligent for years - the brownlow betting thing ought to have woken them up but realistically, nothing changed at all.

Someone with a penchant for machine learning could do some pretty deep analysis of historic umpiring.

Oh and a big **** you to the sanctimonious ***** on here who would sn'igger "Ha ha you really think umpires are going to engineer results?".

Yeh because they're all superhuman and incapable of being pressured or manipulated.

Hopefully this event is the first domino in revealing how morally bankrupt the officiating has been.
