It is very difficult to locate historical records online of which Umpires were officiating games

I think they have been negligent for years - the brownlow betting thing ought to have woken them up but realistically, nothing changed at all.

By the way, just as an extra aside: this example is yet another really good reason the AFL should be working to remove and minimise rules that involve "interpretation" in the game. It reduces the ability for umpires to influence a game - both in the funny business sense, but also in general. Games should ideally be determined by the teams as much as possible.

I don't need stats Gaso. My Umpire mate (who featured in the Winston video) was pretty transparent. A Collingwood supporter himself, he said he enjoyed umpiring North games but he admitted that The Geesh hated Carey and hated North. Make of that what you will.

My opinion exactly. Umpires cannot make an interpretation of a player's intent nor can they judge the sufficiency of any attempt to keep the ball in play or otherwise.

I hate the idea of the "last touch" rule but I would gladly trade it to rid the game of the "insufficient intent" rule.

As for the deliberate rushed behind rule... This abomination is offensive to the sport.

If the AFL ran FIFA they'd have a 50m (penalty) for defending teams conceding a corner. Nonsense rule.

A long time ago I worked with a gent who played a bit of WAFL and VFL. He said Michael was the best he'd played against.

I think the idea is favourite player rather than categorically the best. Growing up I had Horse and Mckernan as my favourite players, but unequivocally knew they weren't as good as Duck.

Agree. During that period, Anthony Stevens was my favourite player, but it went without saying that Duck was clearly the best.

I'm always bemused by people who assert that Ablett Snr is the best of all time. He was very good, might even have been second best, but Duck was clearly above him and everyone else.
