Player on the mark.

You no longer have the option of backing off to allow lateral movement.
If you contested the mark, too bad, you stand the mark and thats all you can do.
Luckily in the sport of Australian Rules Football 2 players - and only 2 players - from each team only ever contest a mark.

Correct, they reduced the run up as there was a high rate of PCL injuries caused by Rucks jumping into each other.

Interesting juxtaposition with the concussion related rules, brought in to limit liability claims from players (ie AFL taking all reasonable steps to fulfil its duty of care to the players).

Knees/ligaments? No biggie apparently. Good luck with future claims AFL given you’re on record as acknowledging the issue and abandoning a clear mitigating step…

Yes and no. It's crap for us because we never have enough players providing overlap run. But it's great for teams that do.

I vote no and f*ck no.
Its crap because favoured teams like Geelong seem to be exempt from the rule.
They can crimp, grab, wander sideways ...

But full on red light green light for us ...

It's crap because it is not a necessary rule and the umpires / AFL are incapable of correctly adjudicating any rule - therefore the less there are the better.

This is going to be an almighty cluster****.

They can’t even ****ing judge marks correctly, now they’re having to focus on peripheral players and whether they need to pretend they’ve stared directly into the eyes of Medusa.

FMD.
It'll probably make adjudicating it easier imo. The check will now be that if it was a contested mark or a free (say a high tackle), there must be a player on the mark because someone had to be within the 5m. Simplifies it...in theory. No middle ground waiting to see if someone chooses to back off or not.

It will stop the huge range of grey area that saw clubs like Collingwood inexplicably get away with backing off the mark while it would get called against us.

The video showing the examples where rule changes will takes places starts off with… just guess… out of a million possible examples what do you think is the first example they put up there… you bet it’s X owning TDU.

X just standing there while TDU does some stupid jump and flails about.

So they want rucks to run and jump for centre square ball ups, so each ruck would want to run and jump into each other and use the others body to leverage to the height of the ball. What's X should do is not run and jump at the opposition then they cannot jump all over him, dodge their jump and we will take possession

Just catching up with these rule changes.
What happens if the ball is marked on the 50 metre line and the closest player is 4m away?
The player takes his 30 seconds for a shot with nobody manning the mark
Who knows, they should be trialing this shit before introducing it into the game. The pre season comp (when they had one) was prime to do so. Unfortunately they are applying a bandaid over all their past **** ups.

They need to strip it back and go to a simplified way of modernising the game. Im not one that needs to hold onto traditions, I dont mind some of the changes to the game but really dislike everything this game is right now
