Jesus what a shit article. He's filled half of it with information that has nothing to do with North and jammed so many unnecessary words into some paragraphs to hit his word quota. Screams of an AI job to be honest
Way more poorly written than I expected, and I didn't have high expectations in the first place. Bloody hell

I know right! Forced myself to read it just b/c it was about North and though, what the heck is this, garbled nonsense.

Living half way around this spinning orb I tend to read anything written about North because not much is. Sadly much of what I read is like this showing just about no research, knowledge, insight or interest. As a ‘small’, ‘working class’ unfashionable club we will continue to get this treatment unless and until we start winning.

Damian Barrett turned in a ‘I hate North, they are shit, they will always be shit, nothing they do ever changes it’ diatribe on AFL Daily. Supposedly he supports us so I guess he gets to vent the pain we all feel on air whilst we are stuck doing it here!

I'm of the opinion he still has some credits in the bank after 2007. He was very handy when it counted.

Whilst I disagree with his assessment of our chances in 2026, I'm not that secure in thinking we'll be good (or need to be in 2026).

It sucks a bit that all North fans aren't as one-eyed as us, but that's ok. If he's still "tearing us apart" when we improve then he can be offed, but not now IMO.

fwiw i couldnt care 1 bit what he says and any credits if in fact he had any have well and truly gone.

without even reading any of his tripe my opinion of where we will be next year is solely based on what i see. i understand your outlook is a lot more bullish than mine and fwiw i genuinely hope that is more than case.

sadly hope and probability are very different animals.

Yeah, but at least with me you're onboard with someone who was paid substantially to predict the future (in a past life). I can't offer more than that as surety.

Yes there's a difference between the NMFC and Commodities, but not as much as you'd like to think.

I just want one more, I can die with some grace, if I get to experience one more with some of you Turkeys. That'll do me.

It certainly was but 17000 kilometres away means consuming every scrap you can get, even him (and to be clear he is probably my least favourite of the AFL.com crew).
I don't read any papers or watch any tv shows regarding footy. I learn everything from big footy, therefore I feel well informed due to the unbiased and insightful reporting by the diligent correspondents who take the time to post their interesting opinions and breaking news right here every day.

With preseason essentially yet to occur, what's he basing his insightful opinion on? A lack of headline grabbing trades?
I'm with most others about our 2026 prospects (I need to see some evidence first), but what I can say with some confidence is that Damian Barrett's opinions on football aren't worth ****

Understand his opinion and it's not an unreasonable one, but the problem for me is how it effectively controls the whole narrative around North because he's the most widely promoted voice in the AFL given he's in almost every pre-game/season prediction conversation (sliding doors, AFL Daily, general articles, triple m midweek rub/weekend rubs) and every debrief conversation (Damo's recovery on triple M, afl.com.au things we learnt, AFL daily during season, general articles).

Narrative matters because potential players and current players hear it (regardless of trying to avoid it), and so do members/potential members. You could say that the narrative comes from us losing and our decisions, and that's true in part but this level of constant negativity has not been applied to other historically poor teams (carlton, melbourne, brisbane, and now west coast).

He doesn't have to endorse us, but what other team gets the treatment North does from a single prominent media figure?

Not sure when the credits run out but he was a huge support at the time. The help he gave me accessing friendly media, or at least open minded media, was invaluable. I have no doubt that WANM's work was a massive part of saving the club, especially given the feedback I was getting from NM Directors (and media friends). We were one board meeting away from gone. His anger seems to be focussed on two former admin/directors who he said at the time (later) set the club back 10 years.

If Buckley is one then I'm hip to the whole Barrett scene.

I thought the podcast was fine. Hard to argue with much of it (perhaps he could have been aware that W Dawson and Whitlock are potential answers down back) but in the main he was spot on. And I agree with him 100% that Parker should be captain for the next two years.

What podcast are you referring to?
Barrett's latest thing.
He's over being shit, who can blame him? We all are.

Wasn't so aware of our replacements (which was my big thing too) - the team we select to run out in Rd 1 is going to look very different to the team who lost to Port in Adelaide by a kick and to Essington by a point (without Wardlaw, Curtis, Archer et al) - I'll add.

Was his usual simplistic solution to recruit another potato like Sam Frost to cure our defensive ills?

Generally it's not the criticism that's annoying after 6 years of shit, it's the lack if understanding, the moronic suggestions and lack of analysis into what our list looks like.

Yep.. you nailed it Mickey. That's him.

Are people still pissed at Damian Barrett for calling out exactly where the club is and has been at?

He can be grating but he loves North Melbourne. People seem to take everything he says to heart because he's not rosey eyed about it.
I respectfully disagree with this. Please tell me there isn't a movement to accept Barret and even praise him for "calling it as it is."
He's a fully fledged founding member of the "take cheap shots at the easiest target in order to make yourself look tough" school. Along with Cornes, Healy and BT, they try to build their own profile by criticising the people who are the least able to fight back, and hope to ingratiate themselves with the hordes. Barrett wouldn't dare say the things he says about North in reference to Collingwood or the other big clubs.

Not just that, he breaks no news these days, he has no entertaining showbiz qualities, and he provides zero insight into the tactics or strategies of the game itself. He's the most egregious example of the sheltered workshop that is AFL media. If I were writing a job appraisal for him, literally the only thing in the "pros" column would be that he's adept at generating lots of content.
