Commentators barracking

After watching less and less AFL it's opened my eyes up just how bad it is.

I watch MotoGP, MXGP, F1 and but of EPL.

Comparing the commentary in those sports to AFL there's a big difference I would say they are like monkeys on the piss.

I showed an English friend some highlights and I felt embarrassed while showing him, an foreign viewer must see Australians as loud mouth drunks.

"Love the way he goes about it"
"Delicious"
"CYRIL DONT YOU JUST LOVE HIM, HES GOOD ISN'T HE?"
"Oh boy wowee"
"BANG!"

I think there's a couple of different types ofthis, and ironically the freo game is the one i am not concerned about.

Commentators have a job to keep people intersted. (how they do that is a seperate argument)... But when a team is dominant like Richmond were, the commentators will usually try and suggest that the losing team is still a chance... A comeback makes a great story.
The exception to that is when there is a better story by continuing to sell the dominance- either in suggesting that one team is dominant and a flag favourite, or vice-versa that the other team has given up & coach should be sacked etc.
I have no problem with that. Its their job.

What i do have a problem with is a commentator who is consistently for or against a certain team or even player. I think for the obvious ones where there is a clear affiliation (eg. Ed, Tim Watson, but there are others) they just shouldnt be commentating those games on the general telecast. (happy for the club to have seperate broadcasts themselves).
Someone like Carey really frustrates me. He often gives very good analysis but hes very biased. Is clearly biased against anything collingwood related. And with the ducking issue, he defends Selwood but then blames everyone else.

Agree with other but Not Ling.mye is good and not biased at all. He doesn't hide his allegiance but his comments are defiantley not biased and are very refreshing.
Ling is alright, but he can't hide the glee in his voice when Geelong are winning. Fair enough I suppose, if they are playing Friday night or Saturday night (Ling's usual roster) then I don't have a massive problem with it. He's just an ex-player. It's mainly Ricciuto (current board member) and Watson (father of current player) that should be nowhere near their respective clubs wherever possible. Yet both networks appear to go out of their way to get them on for it. Regardless of how hard they try to be impartial, it just shouldn't be like that.

BT is the worst - as well as the worst commentator ever - Last week one moment stuck out. One of the Essendon players passed the ball to Goddard, and Harry Taylor made this amazing spoil sprinting and then jumping to punch the ball out of Goddards hands as he went to mark it.

BT commentating... "The balls kicked to Goddard.... He's dropped the ball... He probably should've marked that."

This is just typical of what we Geelong fans put up with when BT is calling. He just calls our opposition. No mention of the terrific spoil made by the Q9.

The worst I've ever heard was a couple of clowns on 5AA calling a Showdown a few years back. Every player had a nick name I'd never heard of and they screamed and cheered when anything good or bad happened.

One of them even shouted 'BALLLLLL!'

It was pretty hilarious. No idea what the score was haha

5AA is only broadcast into Adelaide though, a bit like K-Rock in Geelong - I don't see how that is a problem (except, yes, they rabbit on too much and half the time they sound like they're having a heart-attack..

In regards to Riccuito commentating, I acknowledge that I'm a Crows fan so I might not see it the same as others but I feel like he does a pretty good job of being objective - Ofcourse everyone knows that he's going to be supporting Adelaide, but I don't think it shows that much.. .. but yeah, totally acknowledge that it might be because I am obviously supporting the Crows too so it might not stick out as much

Being measured and politically correct I'd just say the commentators are annoying and detract heavily from viewing the game.

Without those restrictions, I'd just happily wish to see Taylor bludgeoned to death slowly. With Russell, Darcy and plenty of others cowering in the queue.

I believe some have even said barracking while commentating is 'unforgivable' :$

If a commentator can 1) name the players properly 2) doesn't bring up favourite movies and 3) doesn't ask 1000 rhetorical questions a match, they are a-ok in my book. Barracking is annoying but it's way down my list of commentator pet-hates

"You just feel that if they get the next goal they are right back in this match dont you?"

Yep, I think he's one of the best in that regard.

I really like Roo actually - I love the way he gets fired up with genuine enthusiasm when games start to hot up.

If thats the bit I'm thinking of (a discussion with Maxy last weekend) despite the reeundancy of the actual words, his implications were pretty correct: that the Pies are at a key point of the season and the next few weeks could really shape the rest of our season. (although that could apply to anybody)... At that stage we were 5-3 with 3 tough-ish games coming up... Before a very tough 4-5wk run. Win all these 3 and we give ourselves some insulation to still be able to make the 8, but drop 2-3 of them and with the run to come you could safely say that we wouldn't be making the 8 at the end of the season.

If I forgive him that one...

There was a contest between Langdon and Matt Jones where the ball ended up out of bounds. Hammer's description was, "A great contest between two youngsters." Matt Jones is 27.

Cancelled our Foxtel subscription after the Port vs Richmond game. The commentary is rubbish and apart from only a few episodes of 'The Couch' and 'Open Mike' I haven't seen anything that's much better than listening to the locals talk footy at the pub. The AFL media in general needs to sort its shit out.

Lings is not biased with free kicks and penalties. A few times he says what S Johnson does is shit house and should be looked at.

Yep, its just like 6PR and a West Coast game.

Yep I hear you mate. It has really gone to shit these days. I still watch 360 but Robbo has almost put me right off the show now. Especially his and Whateley hate of Hawthorn wears thin.

Is it just me or does Robbo seem like he's had a few too many bevvies sometimes before the show?

Isn't it well known that he hits the frothies more than what would be considered healthy
I wouldn't know, I just got into 360 seriously this season. I just assumed because it's pretty obvious. He goes off sometimes and it gives me the same feeling I get when I'm at the pub with a mate that's had a few too many and he gets a bit loud and I start getting embarrassed lol.

People really underrate David King bloke is smart pretty funny and you listen when he speaks should be more highly rated

Welcome to the world that has been known by W.A fans for a long time.

Welcome to the world known by Collingwood fans.

Being the most hated club means every commentator that isn't affiliated with Collingwood (ex-player or current president) automatically barracks for whoever we're playing against. It doesn't seem to register with these buffoons that the majority of those watching Collingwood games on TV are Collingwood fans.

Even the 2010 GF replay, late in the last quarter, Bruce was bemoaning how we might be dominant for a few years to come (luckily for him, it didn't work out to plan).

The only commentator I like is Dennis Commetti, just calls the game, has the voice to match, doesn't go over the top, keeps it engaging. But football commentating is in a pretty poor state.

I'd happily pay a bit extra for a press red for Ed type offering all season, and would be cool if other clubs had a similar thing going on. Maybe an extra couple of bucks on the membership to cover it or something (I donno).

I'd just happily wish to see Taylor bludgeoned to death slowly. With Russell, Darcy and plenty of others cowering in the queue.
"Despite the fact this bludgeoning you're inflicting upon me will surely result in my demise...I really like the way you go about it. In fact, I'd go so far as to say you're the best in the business."
-Luke Darcy's final words

Leigh Matthews and Barry Hall hate Collingwood terrible hearing these two talk when we are playing
Really.... a premiership coach hates the club that brought his first coaching triumph? Why would that be?

I think its awesome, if you don't like it jump back to ABC you crusty traditionalists

They follow momentum, believe it or not sides earn the support of the commentators, if you play in a style that's entertaining or do something that's entertaining, they commentate accordingly

Not sure why it bothers people, when they get behind Carlton (like today) it adds to the game, when theyre against Carlton, its good feeling like an underdog and quietening them down when we do something good (insert that never happens joke here)

Its all part of the theatre of football, stop being PC sour pusses
Sorry but PC has nothing to do with it.
I just don't like my intelligence being constantly insulted.
The footy is the entertainment (and the theatre). Not the commentators.
I don't need to be convinced a game is exciting.
I don't need to be told there might be a momentum swing.

A good commentator is like a good umpire.
Understated and hardly noticed.
