Dennis' quips were actually good though, Duurrrwayne's are just absolutely cringe and so try hard.
Not to mention I hate having to hear him say "drop step" every time a player changes direction around an opponent, holy.
Cometti's schtick was insanely cerebral, and he had a brain and mouth connection as good as anyone to commentate the game.
He was entertaining, insightful, and despite a bit of bias at times could sum a game up with a single quote.
The likes of Duurrwayne are boot strappers compared to him. He could have hung around another decade and still been a long way out in front of those guys.
Has anybody stepped up to fill in the void Dennis left yet?
We had some bad luck with both Grybas, Cometti, the insufferable but talented Tim Lane and one or two others all moving on as the pool of commentators got swamped by a vast intake that was big in size and light on for ability.
There's not even a peak Lou Richards around now. It's all Peter McKenna and Peter Landy level guys, including some who have gone off a cliff after their 90s zeniths. Not even an early 90s Rex Hunt in the mix.
There's always been plodders. But when Howie is one of your favorites (no doubt he's a hard working guy, and talented /getting the best out of himself), you know the pool is getting dry.
