Mod. Notice Competitions: READ BEFORE POSTING A COMPETITION

Wow. 17 alerts from this when I wake up the next morning geez. I must say I'm very pleased with the positive response to this. And, I probably would prefer the competition to be league based, yeah.

Mods , when do you think would be good time for this to start? Can I start a bidding thread?

Spanna65 can I suggest one thing about your Rugby comp?

If we're making kits for union, don't call it the Rugby World League. League implies Rugby League.

Something like Rugby World Championship, World Rugby Federation or The Spanna Cup or similar, idk. Just avoid the term league.

A lot of the major rugby club competitions seem to be called just The Xxxxxxxxx Cup. I think that's probably a decent way to go

Yeah that's a good Idea, didn't think of that.

If you can't think of anything obvious, run a thread where you get people to suggest names etc. It worked really well for me with FIRA.

The Spanna Cup is a good starting point.

I think I will, the logos I created were purely done just to give people an idea of what the league will be like. Rugby World league was never going to be the final name.

Create an indigenous jumper for the SANFL

the SANFL are looking to have all teams involved in wearing an indigenous jumper

the comp will have one team per week then a poll over the weekend

maximum 2 entries per person
Going to quote myself here
I'm not huge into that idea of an Indigenous artworks round, it will all simply be contrived and meaningless, possibly offensive as most of us have little to no understanding of the meaning behind the artwork.
This is why I would be hesitant with indigenous designs.

It could also provide an opportunity for people to actively make an effort to understand indigenous art and symbology, or is that not allowed because I'm white?

But realistically not everyone is going to do this

Carn.

Carn.
It wasn't meant to be a dicky question but the sentiment remains. I understand that not everyone will make an attempt, but it does provide a reason to try and learn something about the culture. I've seen people make designs based on other cultures without there being any hullabaloo about "contrived" and "meaningless"

That said, I could see how simply putting together some dots and boomerangs could be considered offensive as it would be stereotypical and essentially a bastardisation of the culture. But with actual effort and meaning put into the design, I don't think it could be considered offensive. I'd be more offended if my race excluded me from being able to use a style of art.

there's nothing stopping you from making a portfolio.
it wouldn't be a half bad idea if you were using it to learn about the symbols and culture while doing it.
I don't know about a portfolio. I have no indigenous heritage whatsoever, let me make that clear in case I haven't been. However, as an exercise in creativity, it would be an opportunity for lots of us to try to gain an understanding and learn about the culture. Something that not many people do apparently, although I distinctly remember learning about indigenous art in either year 4 or 5 and being asked to make a design as a project.

What about a heritage round? I know it would be hard for GC and GWS but it will have been a good 8 or 9 years since the AFL has had a dedicated 'heritage round'. Teams could use their original first year guernsey's or have every player wear long sleeves like in the early 1900's?

What do you guys think about this idea?

bam, this is a good idea

It's just shaky ground. The art of Indigenous culture is taken pretty seriously by them and it's all intertwined with their history and traditions. Note that none of the AFL sides have white people designing their Indigenous guernseys.

The "bastardisation" part is what bothers me. That said, I guess I did the same thing with the Maori art with the Waikato Tigers. I probably won't now that i've thought about that. But obviously the Maori relationship with white people is a lot more positive than the Indigenous one because of the way they were treated, and you even see whites joining in on the Haka and things like that. They've really embraced their culture.

In Australia, there is unfortunately still a lot of bad blood and a competition where we design without great knowledge of the culture could be seen to be offensive.

If done in the right spirit it might not be the end of the world, but it's not something i'd feel comfortably participating in.
