Mod. Notice Competitions: READ BEFORE POSTING A COMPETITION

I'd like to make a one-off competition with prizes. I haven't quite figured out what the design prompt would be, though I'm thinking (given the time of year) that something festive would be great.

First place gets a cushion and a mug with their design printed on each.
Second place gets a mug.
Spooner gets custom toilet paper.

Hey, I might get a prize in this comp!

We wouldn't happen to have any competitions for the World Cup next year?
The weekly World Cup comp is probably enough. If we finish that then we may as well do teams that made 2018 but not 2014.

What are you thinking?
Remember the IR competition bidding process (first team to pick a colour and location gets the choice)?

I'm thinking we could do a soccer comp with bidding being similar to the above but with the nations of the WC18 (not colours, just locations).
We could then get drawn into groups similar to the world cup, meaning more experienced designers get put against newcomers/beginner designers, as well as some intermediate designers. This would create some motivation in the lower levels to create a kit that can really match with the top class in my opinion.

Obviously you'd have a knockout finals series with the best of each group qualifying, I'm sure you know how the World Cup works.

Just an idea, but I personally think it's got more potential than the netball comp I bid for.

Working out who the top designers on here has been floated several times and it has been determined that it will only lead to people bitching. Also there is no reason why lower level designers shouldn't be trying to match the top guys already.

I think it would be easy to split everyone on this board into two groups based on design ability.

Even if it's that much of an issue, there are two possible solutions:
1. Go with the actual WC Groups, which could lead to strategic bidding to not be put with the more competitive designers
2. Randomise every group, which could lead to multiple "groups of death"

Sure, but someone is going to be left out of the top group and then chuck a hissy about it. Then again, now that I'm saying it's a bad idea it will probably get loads of support just like the netball comp did.

Yeah sounds alright for a quick fire soccer comp, float the idea in June it'll probably be sweet. I don't mind the idea of putting strong designers and newcomers in separate groups, maybe even in even splits in each group, but it's a really subjective thing.

I get that this is still subjective to an extent, but I don't see why you couldn't use NAFL placings to seed the competition. They may be 6 months out of date by the time the competition rolls around but it is probably the best way to do it given it is a combination of everyone's opinions and not just your own.

Wanted to get this proposal out there early for two reasons:
1. We need to sort out who's good and who's shit for seeding to work
2. Nobody can say they thought of this before me. *cough cough Lynton cough*

I'd be looking to open bids during March/April, with the actual comp in May/June just when the WC hype starts to build. Comp wouldn't be more than a month and a half long, which seems reasonable imo.

Nah the Gaelic comp has proven people are up for a short turnaround. Earliest you post the bid thread would be the start of June and then get it underway just as the group stages kick off.

I love a WC comp idea!

If we do seedings, this seasons NAFL results would be the fairest way to do it. That said, I wouldn't be adverse to not doing seedings and having an open comp. The best designs will still get to the pointy end, but it gives a good opportunity for one or two people to go on a "cup run" and go deep. Doing the same groups as the real WC and having a first in best dressed bidding like the IR comp could be interesting I reckon.

My only concern is whether we'll be able to get 32 willing participants for a short-turnaround comp.

I don't see why you couldn't do an initial bidding round and then a second round for people to take on a second team to fill the comp up.

I'm not really an advocate for seeding.

You might get Freight Train first round. What can you do to give yourself a chance to beat him? What can you do to close the gap?

Skills develop with hard work and willingness to experiment, but in the mean time some attention to detail and thinking outside the box can get you a result.

f**k I'd hate to draw him.

Posted this over on Reddit, but it feels wrong not sharing a jumper here:

Trialling a new simpler background for my designs which I like more than the old grainy one, what do people think?

I'm still keen on bringing back the Olympics idea Spanna_ had a couple of years ago. I was looking forward to that!

It required you to create your own made up country, flag, colours, IOC logo, as well as a cricket uniform, AFL, soccer, basketball, ice hockey and baseball (and some other ones I may not have completed at the time). As well as opening ceremony attire. It was a cool concept at the time :) Any interest?
