I think we have to follow the lead of Geelong and Collingwood. Review the whole football club and see what has gone wrong this year. We want answers. Geelong did one last year and they got answers, leadership not good enough and not fit enough. They also got a football director and started a new leadership program.

I think every has to be reviewed, including all the coaches and fitness staff. Some of the assistants have been aorund for a while and we need a change. For the benifit of both parties, people like Bond and Cameron have to move on. Bring in some fresh and hard nosed people. Maybe a Hardwick, chase a Voss or a Buckley. Chase a football director, an experienced former senior coach.

We need to be shown to be doing soming, to show our supporters that this year wasn't good enough and we are going to do everything in our power to change, otherwise the club will go backwards and members will fall away.

we do need a change in leadership, for so long it has been stop johno and west and stop the dogs, it is the right time for a new young captain, but who?

football director, an experienced coach?? sheedy? if we could find the right role for him then yes get him

bond the next coach of melbourne? we need to surround ourselves with Successful people voss maybe, hardwick yeah, carey yep hird?? what dose he wanna do? grant or darcy??

we already are starting an early preseason, that was one thing we did after 1996, we know where we have to improve and lets hope we dont just trade for the sake of trading

Thats a very good question re the captaincy - We need an eloquent speaker who can lead by example - Murph springs to mind .. But he does he have the requisite angst to force a team to respond?

I think Hargrave is a better player this year, he doesn't have much of a profile though, usually a captain is a star player.

The best recent captain we had was Scotty Wynd who had a bit mongrel in him. I was lucky enough to be in the rooms before the last game at the whitten oval and he was the one firing up every one before the game. It also helped him becuase we had a lot of hard nuts libba, kretuik, Dent, Romero,Dimma, Southo

It strikes me that we have a lot of short comings but a lack lack lack tough nuts is one of the biggest look at the hawks they may have talls but there got sewell, brown, mitchell, hodge, lewis and guerra all tough nuts smalls.

Out of what we have got I think crossy would be a good choice the only tough nuts are talls harris, minson and Hahn who can be used in the midfield.

I say keep Johnno (AA Capt) for at least another year, then give it to Hahn.

This post wasn't raising concerns with Brad as captain, I think he should be captain, he is our only superstar, last year he was All Australian Captain. My concern is with every other player in the leadership group. Gia, Eagleton, Murphy, West, and however else is about 24 years of age and onwards. None of them do the remarklable to lift the team, a great chase, a great tackle, a gut renching run. They don't inspire the team and all play as individuals, just to make their own stats look good. Gia needs to forget about trying to get points for his dream team and do all the yard things that sometimes don't show up on the stats sheet.

Some of the ground covered by the Hawks players on the weekend, for minimual reward was outstanding. We couldn't get players to chase when they had to. The leadership group has to take resposiblity for this and train their arses of during the preseason because their a long way behind.

Voss and Aker are still good friends, Don't always agree which each other, but are friends.

Johnno would surely stay captain though wouldnt he? Hes only been the offical captain for 21 rounds. But i wouldnt be upset if there was a change in the gaurd.

Harris would make a great captain. Him, Murphy and Cross supporting him.

Think you would get some arguements about that. Harris is well known to drift off with the fairies.

Shaggy as captain?

Are you serious. Yes he has played OK at times this year.

But doesn't he have the tendancy to completly go missing at times. He can have some absolute shocking brain meltdowns and concecede easy goals, give away stupid free kicks, at times show no discipline.

We surely have better options that Shaggy otherwise we have some very serious leadership problems.

shaggy was just some one i thought off dont know why.

my concern isn't with johno, but it is with the group and for us to move forward players from that 99-01 group need to step up and take control.

a change in captain is the way to go, to move forward and stop relying on west and johno in 2008

OK. Agree with your sentiments about the 99-01 group. Just don't agree about Shaggy.

It was interesting when Eade 1st came to the club he kept talking about how we would not get improvement from Darcy, Grant, West, Johnson and Smith and it was the next tier who really had to stand up.

He made those comments numerous times in his 1st year. However I have rarely heard him speak about that since. But it is true, more than ever now (seeing most of them are or will be gone very soon).

The most likely to show true leadership from the 99-01 group is probably Hahn, Murphy or Gia. However all have significant weaknesses that still need to be adressed before they could be considered captain material.

For the club's future they probably all need to really stand up.

Hahn for me has the ability to be a leader. He is a tough nut, who we really missed when he was out.
I think our players are too quiet, introverted type of people. Even Aker has quietened down since he came to us (apart from his newspaper column). We need a bit of a larikin with some grunt out there. I like it much better when Minson is out there - not to mention Granty:thumbsu:

IMO Griffen will be the captain when he is ready down the track. He was captain of SA U18 side and obviously must have some leadership abilities to get that gig. I dare say that if the dogs are to win a flag in the next 10 years or so, it will be Griffen holding the cup on that last day in September.

I also think Griffen will be next captain, we need a player with confidence who can lift everyone around him. Look out for Higgins in the future too.
Johhno has the confidence, but he is too nice. Darcy would have been great if not for his injuries.

Just wonder if Smorgan sometimes logs on for a quick look or maybe it's just common sense;).

Anyway its great, that Smorgan has taken the front step forward with this review.

You need to be able to present something positive to the members when we've tailed off so badly this year. The only thing Smorgan can offer is the same sort of review others have conducted.

Not that the review isn't needed though....

OK a review - good call.

But why get insiders from the club to do it? Get an outsider - recently retired coach or something. Can't help but think that the review is just going to cough up the same reasons we always get. As if Garlick will have a crack at anyone.

I'm also worried about Garlick being part of it, isn't he the football director of the club, who is going to review him. I would have been happier with someone outside the club like a Grant Thomas, he has strong views on our club, leadership and game plan.

Some of the thinks Grant Thomas has said on SEN have been spot on. Where soft, no leadership, not fit enough and game plan not good enough. Why take 4 weeks to review the football department, Grant Thomas or anyone on BIG FOOTY could tell you what went wrong.
