I'm reasonably impressed at about 75% of fans from both Essendon and Richmond refraining from turning this thread into a typical big footy thread.

Here is how I read the situation:

- Heppell became favourite for the RS during the NAB Cup
- Conca's first 3 weeks were in a BP, getting beaten.
- Some Essendon fans, and other clubs, wanted to stir the Tigers up for "another drafting blunder".
- Conca starts playing good footy
- The neutrals then vote for Conca in this thread partly because they, rightly or wrongly, view the OP as an Essendon supporter who likely called Conca a dud early on (despite the mild "I expect this poll to be very close" to protect himself from this effect). In other words "we think you think Conca's a dud, so we'll vote the opposite". Not everyone voted like that, but some, definitely.

It's well documented that the Richmond of old was terrible. We made drafting mistakes with Fiora and Tambling. We also didn't develop players to their potential.

However, the early calls of drafting mistake towards Conca were sympotmatic of the attitude towards the RFC of old, which IMO - are no longer justified. For example, if Collingwood drafted Conca, nobody would have made the early "he's a dud" call. I'm not aiming that at the OP, but towards earlier threads about Conca and the reason behind those threads (the "Richmond is shit" attitude). To put it in one sentence - attitudes towards Richmond should probably change, and if not, you might look silly because we're not a rabble anymore and you'll eventually get caught out :p

This could almost make sense if the poll wasn't created only 3 days ago.

I said it was likely a portion of voters had a perception of the OP as having a bit of an agenda, rightly or wrongly. I didn't pass my own judgment, just trying to give an account for the poll results as I think Heppell has performed better than Conca over the first few rounds.

This was probably the first week that Conca may have arguably performed better, however it's pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things. The only thing we can conclude from their first few weeks is that both will prove to be good picks. There was no major mistake by Richmond (as some of the less thoughtful posters jumped the gun with during the first couple of weeks in other threads).

Richmond supporters will quickly take pleasure in biting back because many will want to rub it in to the select posters who prematurely labelled Conca a dud.

Pretty common situation on Big Footy, understandable reactions from both sides of the fence.

Let's show we're both a little better than some of the other teams who engage in this behaviour, yes? :thumbsu:

Things I've learnt this year from the polls board:
Higgins > Thomas
Watts can't play
Martin > Swan
Tambling > Buddy
Atley > Heppell

I reckon we should do the right thing & take over the over-priced contracts of duds like Buddy, Swan, Watts & Thomas.

If Richmond added Heppell to the likes of

Riewoldt, Martin, Delidio, Cotchin it would be scary for opposition clubs in the future.

BUT ........

Wanted Heppell at the time. Tried to convince myself we did the right thing but really I think Heppell just has more star factor. Would be good next to Martin, Cotchin, Deledio and Foley.

Nothing wrong with Conca though...looks a good player.

Was impressed by Heppell right from the get-go, but wasn't overly convinced by Conca. However, in the last couple of Richmond matches I've seen, Conca has looked the goods. Not sure if it's a case of him adjusting to the tempo, or the team just playing better around him and giving him a better chance to show what he's got...

Either way, too early to call this one IMO. Both look good.

Seen enough to make a call now: Heppell.

Both really good players with great skills.

Would be happy with either player, as it is we have Heppell and wouldnt trade him for Conca as Im sure Richmond supporters wouldnt trade Conca for Heppell.

Both will be very good players.

Heppell will push into the mids and dominate imo, he'll be that outside running player we need. See him as a Goddard type player with a lighter frame imo. Obviously not as hard at it.

Will be great to see how they progress.

Conca is starting to show why he was taken at pick 6 with his best game to date so far today. Heppell is still ahead although I have a feeling the gap between them will be a lot closer by year's end:)
