did you watch his games in 2013? He was fantastic, used the ball well, fast, and dangerous in front of goals. He showed some great potential. It all went downhill when he ripped his hammy off the bone. Been struggling ever since.

You're probably right. I was a fan of him and then he did what a lot of previous young Richmond players did when they sign a new contract. Start playing badly...

No he wasnt. he had a couple of real good games and suddenly he was the next big thing. He had more than his share of poor ones . In the main he had decent ones for a junior player..
He has never been fantastic on any sort of consistent basis. His deficiencies continue to hit you in the face

Imo the worst thing that has ever happened to Conca was he was taken top 10. The expectations remain too high.
If we end up with a good consistent player i will be happy. I have concerns we wont even get that.

Although Peggy O'Neal has told us to all calm down (and I can see her point), getting the pick wrong (and so early in the draft) has an impact for the footy life of the players who we missed out on. Hepell and Lynch will one day be Captains of their respective clubs and play for the next ten years.
And it wouldn't surpise me if Conca is traded this year, (like Tambling was) to distance the club from the disappointment of the pick. Hello Adelaide??

I don't think the recruiting staff should be on life tenure, surely it isn't rocket science either - Jay Clark got it pretty right.

Conca should not be traded for nothing nor because he may represent a recruiting blunder. Thats the recruiters/areas problem not the club overall
 
Conca - Ah one of the good old arguments. To me he started his career Okish, then got better over time until the end of 2013 he was flying. Mid 20 possessions adn kicking goals, tacckles, 1%'s. Very good. then RIPPED HIS HAMSTRING OFF THE BONE!!!!

He was crap in 2014, probably because he was not only not fully fit, he was not sure of his body. This year, injury in pre-season and little on in the season itself. Playing OK VFL football. So to this little black duck we had a very nice little pick until a terrible and unusual injury. Now we have a guy taking along time to come back to where he should be. The talent is definitely there, but is his goose cooked?? I don't know, but right now he seems to be a guy that is underperforming his talent. Maybe given time and good development assistance he will come good and be that mid 20s goal scoring mid, with a strong defensive side that we want. That level is close to, but not quite , AA. It's at least a good B grade player, maybe A. Right now he is a good VFL player, but no star. I'm happy to wait this year and see what happens. But for God's sake accept that he had a terrible injury and is taking a long time to recover physically and mentally.

Personally think you overrate that form a bit. Conca's never been "fast" even before that injury and 12 goals in 17 games is nothing special. That's his best goal kicking season and the minimum you'd expect from a full time mid. He's a bit one paced, average at best kicking and decision making. But he can win the ball reasonably well, good mark and is a good tackler.

I hope he improves I really do but I don't know if I'd rather him in the side right now or Taylor Hunt. That tells me where he's at. Injuries have not helped granted.

And that is exactly what the club is doing. I like Conca and he is an asset when up and running. He's had a very limited preseason and needs to get miles into his legs through game time. Let him slowly build up and have him right for the second half of the year. It's a long season and still plenty of games to go for him.

Well said.

I always like to point back to the early days of BF when many Tiger fans would spew their bile about Richo and how the club should trade him. And many are still on here. They would never accept that they posted what they did but search is a man's best friend at times.

The reality of the situation is that Conca can play. When fit, he will be a 25 possession per game player with a high disposal efficiency and love of a contest. James Kelly type of player. He ripped his hammy from the bone and that is as bad as a bad break. Anyone who has been around someone who snaps his hammy from the bone knows the pain and length of time it takes to come back. Just let him play in the seconds for another 6 weeks or so and get miles into his legs and increase his confidence. He is highly regarded around the club.

The point I was making was that as posters were unreasoned back then with their Richo arguments, same now. Conca has been largely recovering from his snapped hammy in 2013. Last year was a right off and his limited preseason this year will hurt him for the first half of the year. He can play and can be a very good contributor to the Tiges. He is sorely missed at the moment but if he can get himself on the park and stay on the park, he will be a significant positive for us.

I don't think you could be more wrong with your belief that the Journo did a better job than our recruiters. Obviously hindsight is a wonderful thing but even with the benefit of that your post is wildly inaccurate.

Pick 3 - Day hasn't lived up to potential
Pick 6 - Polec - proved to have a poor attitude and application before going home
Pick 9 - Gorringe - hasn't done much
Pick 10 - Smedts - hasn't done anything
Pick 12 - Jacobs - battled
Pick 14 - Brodie Smith - much better than a pick 14
Pick 17 - Harper - has more than struggled
Pick 18 - patty mcarthy - delisted
Pick 19 - Jed Lamb - more than struggled
Pick 20 - Darling - should have been top 5ish

Of the ones we were actually talking about at the time I really wanted Heppell and was torn by Lynch. I can see what our recruiters were thinking with Conca though. Will scrap for the footy, will tackle, can change direction, can run at a good pace, and when he is on is a low hard kick of the footy. At his best he shapes as one of the most balanced midfielders in that draft pool. Let's hope he can have a good run at it.
 
I'm surprised he survived the mental anguish the club put him through in one of his early games.

Remember watching him being asked to play back pocket on Milne early on and got towelled up. Milne kicked 4.7 for the night. I don't know when he got moved off him, but to put a second gamer on someone as dangerous as Milne was a cruel idea.

I've sort of liked most of what he has done, but I've almost put him on the same list as Fiora. Just doesn't appear to have the professionalism with preparation and conditioning that you'd expect from a 1st rounder / any professional footballer. I know nothing of him personally, but looking at his body shape, I'm not overly impressed with our conditioning staff or how committed he might be to getting the best out of himself.

Pick 4 - Gaff in front of Conca.

I just corrected your list and went to pick 30 our second pick.
Gotta disagree. Nearly everyone did a better job than our recruiters in 2010.
We had 5 nd picks and the best of them may be Conca. I say maybe because Conca may not last another 2 seasons. It was a horrible draft for us with missed opportunity at every single pick.
Without hindsight i know of several rank amateurs who had Heppell at 6 and Parker at 30.This seemed to be a common theme.

Conca 6. What a waste. We may have a decent c grade player at best. Then again we may not.
Batchelor 30. What an ordinary player, he is a battler at his best. He was another big reach. Even Sheehan who is nothing but positive on draft day said as much.
Helbig 47 delisted
Macdonald 51 delisted.
Derickx 63 delisted.
At each of the last three picks there were other good options.We had other list needs and didnt even look to address them.


Yep that journo and most of australia probably did a better job than our recruiters. It wasnt hard to do.

Yes he had a bad injury and yes he shouldnt be as hardly judged on last years performance. Although that doesnt explain the michelin man gut he ended the year with. It wasnt the hammy that shoved all those pies into him.

But there is somthing fundamentally flawed with an argument that chooses to compare (at best) an unproven player with Richo who is one of our greatest ever.

good, everyone should stop wanting him rushed back in then if McDonough, Arnott etc have to earn a game with repeat VFL efforts then.

The point I was making which seems to have been missed is that there were many posters on here calling for Richo's head on a trade platter because of his behaviour and attitude. I remember those days clearly here on BF. I was one of the few arguing that Richo should actually berate his teammates even more than he is doing because of the shit they constantly delivered to him. Richo was one of our few elites through those bullshit trying years and yet posters wanted him gone.

Irrational arguments were being thrown up then and I feel the same irrational arguments are being thrown up around Conca. At no point have I placed Conca anywhere near Richo and never will.

And fwiw, I agree with your point about him getting fitter. Even if not playing he can still keep himself in good condition. Needs to maybe see someone about some AOD.
