Hey there guys,

You'd probably remember back in the trade period last year how there was talk of Byron coming along and joining your mob. From what I remember, I think it got a pretty bad reception from the media and the club, wether it be he was too old, money issues, discipline, whatever. Just thinking now, in hindsight (Cause we all know, it's a beautiful thing) taking into account his great form with Melbourne, would you have taken him back then, given you had the oppurtunity? I could understand how you may have a youth policy and whatnot, but would you turn down the chance to take him on board? Personally I think he's completely turned our team around, there's something about Melbourne since he rocked up and I believe he might have done the same, maybe not to the same extent, but would have made a big impact if he was playing for Carlton. I'd imagine he'd be a walk up start for you guys aswell. Just the general consensus from the Carlton faithful here would be good just to get your opinion on it

Cheers

I agree that he would have been a large asset for Carlton, our youth policy was the key issue for not drafting him.

No doubt Byron has added a sense of hardness and purpose to your outfit.

A better, and more instantly beneficial trade i cannot remember in recent times.

Carlton is probably the least physically intimidating club in the league, and having byron around could have added that mongrel to the team. Also showing the younger players how to play good, hard footy.

Well done on getting him to melbourne though, your already reaping the rewards as hes a player who carries a reputation with him through the whole AFL.

In hindsight he would have been a great pick up for this year and maybe 1 or 2 others. We still wouldn't take him because we're looking at 3 - 5 years time when he isn't likely to be around any more. To pick him up we would have had to trade a youngster or a draft pick. Neither one would suit our long term plan.

It's great to see him doing well for the Dees though. He was totally devastated by the media hype about his physical play in Adelaide. Completely unfairly too, I might add

Well, really, his one player in some of the form he has been this season that we need.

Big, strong, physical, intimidating - could have been more than handy.

He would teach the kids to be hard, which is something Houlihan, Stevens and Scotland can't do.

i don't think it would be fair to say that we wish we had Byron. Would he be playing as well in our side? Would he be so enthusiastic when he's not winning most weeks? I doubt it. If we had taken Byron, I don't think it would have worked out and everyone on here would have been ripping Pagan a new one for going after Byron.

We could have used him and Brent Guerra as well. We couldn't give any draft picks for him though and we really needed McLaren in the PSD as a backup.

I am not upset we got McLaren in hindsight but some tough nuts who can kick goals would have been nice.

yeah, exactly my point. Carlton needs that mongrel back. Thats why Fraser Brown and Greg Williams were so valuable back in the 90's.

Lets go after a couple of tough, mean, hard players in the draft, who can also really play footy. They would be very influencial in changing the culture around the club.

We cant be pushed around anymore right?

What people dont seem to realise nowdays though, is that players like Byron and Guerra are now AFL tribuneral targets.

If they even so much as make minimal contact with another player, they are finished. I really do think the AFL targetting them has changed the way both approach their games.

But in terms of play making, then yes .. i'd take them both.

I thought Carlton should have tried to get Byron at the time and was very dissapointed that we didn't go harder to get him, he is exactly what we need on the half back line to stiffen up our defence and show the youngsters how to play hard aggressive footy. A big miss for Carlton IMO and given Pagans history with Byron i really thought we would have tried to get him, I also wanted Salopek and a deal for the 2 of them would have been worth giving up some draft picks and players for IMO, they are both exactly what we need at the moment a hard running midfielder and a hard hitting hard running half back flanker a huge loss on both counts.:D

He'd be no good at Carlton. He's the type of player who needs good players around him to do well. We'd be getting pumped every week and he'd drop his head and want to go back to NT with his cousins.
