Round 14
Wazzas
vs Roys FFC at the BJO

damn-it-not-this-again.gif

The Roys had the wood on us this season, and belted the living daylights out of us with it.

Round 14 saw us head to the BJO to tackle Mobbs and co, our tails still quivering from the last hiding they gave us, as we desperately sought a win to keep our finals hopes aloft.

A highly active week ensued, with more iced coffees consumed than on an early morning building site. Game wise, we held our own in the first quarter, with both sides managing four majors and we went into the first break on par. But a woeful second quarter saw the Roys pile on eight goals to none, to open up old wounds from our last encounter. We would match them in the third quarter, yet this saw them maintain a 56 point lead over us at the final break. But the Roys maintained the pressure in the last quarter, as they went on to win the quarter and register a 69 point trashing.

And so we're dead last with two to go, on a two game losing streak and play the Swamprats next round with a milestone to celebrate.

Dour in defence - NaturalDisaster was the pick of the defenders on the weekend, holding the Roys' dangerous full forward Mooch to just 3 goals in a big rout while collecting 10 touches and 3 marks of his own.

Midfield maestro - The skipper led from the front on Sunday, his 23 touches and 7 tackles leading the club as he combined with fellow leaders Tonga Bob and DockerDen5215 as they toiled manfully against a Roys onslaught.

Fearsome up front - This season it's been the vets bobbing up in the pockets and delivering, and Round 14 was no different. Freofalcon was a handful up front, as he managed 3 majors from measly supply.

BEEG

With 173 majors to his name since crossing over from the Bombers in S28, BEEG is now ranked second on the all-time goalkicking ledger for the club.

BEEG has kicked 42 goals & 23 behinds this season, with his trademark accuracy on show, kicking at 64.6%.

Bob Stats S32.png

buscemi 90.gif

I hear ya TV & Film's Steve Buscemi! The 'someone' is us, and the 'it' is some decent stats!

One round left Wazzas and it's squeaky bum stuff. We can still make finals, we can end in mediocrity, or we can receive our first ever wooden spoon. But let's talk about where the individual stats are after yesterday's shoot out with the Sin Citizens.

w ladder s32 r15.JPG

Here's this week's Hot Takesᵀᴹ:
  • Last week was our best performance on field for the season in pretty much everything. As Qatistician Ljp86 says:
• Coney Island Warriors' score of 25.12 (162) is the club's equal sixth highest score on record and their highest score against Sin City Swamprats. This match is just the seventh occasion the Warriors have kicked 25 goals or more in an SFA fixture.
  • We also had a whopping six players get > 100 DT points, so it goes without saying that there were a heap of season best games, including from BEEG (who also kicked a season-high 8 goals), FootyGuy13 who cracked the ton in his 50th game (making a mockery of our aversion to milestones), Raveneyes who probably had the best game of their 235 game career and definitely in the top 10 Wazza performances ever, toxic who also cracked the ton despite kicking 1.5, Volbeat (another ton cracker) and I did OK too;
  • TheInjuryFactory still dominates the stats, so much so that his 111 DT points was only his third highest of the season;
  • Although zackah has still played 100% of game time this season, he failed to kick a goal meaning that the current longest streak of games with at least one goal kicked goes to Freofalcon who has had the goal qumpires wave flags at him in his past 11 games;
  • TIF is still the only Wazza to have > 1000 DT points, but DockerDen5215 is perilously close. They both have over 1000 Exie things, as do Volbeat and Snuffaluphagus (in an outstanding rookie season).

Heritage Round

tumblr_inline_oem1szHBzr1shrb8p_400.gifv

For at least another week anyway.

Round 15 saw us host an out of sorts Swamprats, with both teams having plenty to play for. The Swampies looking to secure a finals spot after uncharacteristically missing out last season, while we are pitted in a tantalising race to the bottom in a loser takes all battle for the spoon.

The heritage round clash fueled some banter early doors, but overall the week was pretty sedate. Game wise, we jumped out of the blocks with a mammoth nine goal first quarter. The game quickly evolved into a shootout, as we lost the second quarter eight goals to seven, but still managed a handy 18 point buffer at the main break. The Rats kicked into gear first, and would go on to win the third quarter and close the gap to just two straight kicks and a shonky one heading into the final stanza. But we would end up running over the top of them late, recording a 37 point win as we did the double on the Rats for quite possibly the first time in our history, but definitely on my watch.

And so we rose from the ground like the undead, shuffling our way out of dead last and seeking to feast on some brains, although with the Phoenix up next we're more likely to starve.

With one hand still firmly on the spoon, expect plenty of unintelligible mutterings from me this week with all possibilities still on the table.

Dour in defence - Raffle it between Moo and Mofra, with 16 and 15 touches respectively, and a handy 11 marks between them.

Midfield maestro - Veteran Raveneyes made a mockery of this column on Sunday, bouncing back from a donuts performance just a mere fortnight ago to put in one of the most dominant performances of the season. After an early switch into the guts from defence, his 33 touches, six tackles and four goals a dead certainty to take home the 3 Mobbs votes on the night.

Fearsome up front - Big boy BEEG had a day out against the Swampies, putting up possibly his greatest performance this season, banging home a huge 8 goals 2 as he absolutely tore the game apart.

FG became the first Warrior this season to salute during a milestone game. The last time a Wazza won on a milestone day was for RelaxMax's 150th back in Rd 15, S31.

Congrats Guy, you had a belter yourself and thanks for not ******* us up :D

Missing out on finals sucks, Warriors. I've had to endure it two seasons in a row now. So why not distract yourself with Sweet's favourite game (apart from qooty of course).

Sign-ups close at 8pm AEDT tonight.

And that Wazzas was that. Eleventh place, percentage off the spoon. Another season to wait before we create history. Let's go through the final lot of individual stats.

SPOILER ALERT: there will be much tagging to come.

That's a wrap for the on-field stats for the season. Hope you all got something out of it, honestly though I'm so much of a spreadsheet jockey that I got a kick out of it even if nobody else did (pun absolutely intended).

Oh, and thank you for belated playing short-lived Wazza trivia. :thumbsu:

Answer 1 - Correct. It was B.
Answer 2 - Correct. It was B again.
Answer 3 - Correct. All 3. Only two have won the Fred Medal, with Reggie taking out the Alf Andrews Medal.

Round 16
Wazzas
vs East Side Phoenix at The Eyrie

good-night-sweet-prince-big-lebowski.gif

It's all over for another year.

The final round saw us head to the Phoenix with our destiny in the hands of others, a strangely familiar feeling in recent seasons. The Eyrie promised either the most unlikely of hail mary's into a last gasp finals campaign, or at the other end of the spectrum, threatened to deliver the wooden spoon to Van Cortlandt Park for the first time in club history. Mercifully, it did neither.

A sedate week ensued, with two tired, pensive clubs weary of tempting fate and incurring the wrath of the sim, so rather stood off each other with the odd throw and parry, with only some late SM v Volbeat action and a kitsch Agent93 stitch up in the guise of trivia game giving the thread any life to speak of.

The first half saw an arm wrestle between the two sides, as first the Phoenix, then us took slender leads after the first and second quarters respectively, with just six points separating us at the main break. We managed to take a slight advantage into the final break, as a lively third quarter saw us do just enough to edge our noses in front, with a handy 16 point buffer giving us some, albeit faint, hope.

And yet, in typical Wazzas fashion, while we looked like a chance to force our way into the eight with a barnstorming final quarter, we instead surrendered the lead with a limp last quarter showing to allow the Phoenix to run over the top of us and fire into the finals with an 11 point victory at our expense.

Well hey, we narrowly avoided the wooden spoon for the second time in three seasons with a measly 7% saving us the ignominy or robbing us of the notoriety, depending on your perspective, so I guess there's that?

Dour in defence - Mofra led the defence at the Eyrie, his 20 touches and 6 marks quite possibly his best performance for the season.

Midfield maestro - Leaders DockerDen5215 and myself were hard to split on the day, with both hitting the scoreboard, and racking up 20 and 18 touches respectively, even though it was the Phoenix who won the midfield battle on the day.

Fearsome up front - It was the spearhead BEEG who led all comers on Sunday with four majors to finish out the season with his head held high.

Our 11th place finish is the club's equal lowest ladder position on record at the completion of an SFA season. Season 32 is also the fourth time in the last five seasons that the Warriors have missed the finals.

Elite consistency.

Well Wazzas, that's it for Season 32.

Stay tuned for the dates coming soon for the S32 Frankston Rover Medal Count, and stick around the board when you get the chance as there's a lot of news afoot for the new season, and a number of us still well and truly in the hunt come awards season over the next few weeks.

Bit of a s**t one in the end on field, but thanks to you all for making it another enjoyable one off the field. For those heading off for holidays and taking a break from things, have a safe and sexy Christmas and New Year's break and look forward to seeing most of you back here again in Season 33 come late Jan/Feb.

FootyGuy13 - 50 Sweet FA Games

Bow down and pay your respects to one of the league's pre-eminent statisticians and amateur historians, and the man singlehandedly responsible for bringing almost all of our returned Warriors these past seasons out of the wilderness, FootyGuy13!!!

Having joined the club off the back of an impressive eAFL campaign as co-coach of the Demons outfit, FootyGuy13 has stamped himself as someone with a passion and talent for crunching the numbers and delivering some key and unique insights into how we perform each week, but not only that, he has also dug deeper than anyone has ever dug, immersing himself in our club history to not only document every Frankston Rover Award result since our inception, but also collating and providing some incredible historical context to our results, all in a wonderful

A Eurovision and Rebecca Black enthusiast, but we won't hold that against him.

He fittingly racks up his 50th game this week during Heritage Round, as we host the Sin City Swamprats in a must win clash, but we won't hold that against him either.

Well Wazzas, the time has come for me to step back from the captaincy of the club.

I'll be wrapping up official duties with the Frankston Rover Medal Night, which will be held on 12th December, coinciding with the Sweet FA Grand Final.

I've loved every minute of leading this club, but have found the last two seasons have been a difficult balance with RL kicking my arse, and I haven't been able to invest the amount of time it requires into the club, and so it's time for me to hand over the reigns to the next leader who can take the club forward.

When I came to the club, we had an ageing list, but there was still something unique about the club, the character of the place, the characters in the place. It's the reason I'm still here and it's the reason that to me, the best thing about qooty has been leading this club.

While I was reluctant to step into Woosh's shoes at the time, given the shadow she cast over the club, I feel as though I've been able to lift the club and leave us in a better place than I found it.

Over the past 5 seasons, while the on field stuff as a team has been disappointing, the off field success, and the individual honours our Wazzas have collected along the way, coupled with the stewardship of seeing a number of our most favourite Warriors reach life membership of the club, has been the part that's made me the most proud.

We've added six life members to the club honour board in that time, have seen 14 All-SFA guernseys won by Wazzas, multiple seasons equalling a club best four of five nominations selected in the final All-SFA side. We've also seen almost every individual honour bestowed upon our teammates, from Fred Medals, to the beez Trophy, the TFLUA-Tiger Medal, even the Frankston Rover Award named after our illustrious founder, Warriors have done it all.

We had our first dual Frankston Rover Medal winners, and have added six new members to the Frankston Rover Medal club in that time, with some of our modern club greats saluting in multiple seasons.

We've seen a major list overhaul and yet in the same breath, welcomed back some of our all time club champions from our formative seasons back to the squad since S30, and it's been great to have you back home. We've also managed one of the lowest list attrition rates in the competition, with several league heavyweights joining the club, and staying here for seasons, contributing to the culture of the place.

S32 was one of our quieter seasons in terms of engagement on my watch, but it still far exceeds the activity we saw when I arrived, and I feel satisfied that I am leaving the club in a better place than I found it.

Throughout it all, we've fiercely maintained our edge, have never lost our wit or our antagonism, all while remaining one of the most divisive clubs in the league.

I think Frankston Rover would approve.

So thanks for all of your support over the past 5 seasons, thank you for what you've all brought to the club, this is the best *en club in the competition, and I look forward to seeing us thrive for many seasons to come, and who knows, with the TiF curse lifted, we might even lift the cup one of these days.

Now before any of you campaigners get in first, I'm going to see myself out.

Sorry to see you step down, TIF.

I’ve definitely enjoyed playing under you and you’ve always been a favourite of mine going back to the days when I actually participated in the Freo Bored.

You’re one of the good campaigners around here.
