Senior list changes - extra 'in' due to 39 on senior list this season
IN (11): Clarke (rookie elevation), West, Paine (traded), McGuane (DFA), Aish, Gardiner, McStay, Taylor, Cutler, Robertson, Freeman (draft)

OUT (10): Black (retired), McKeever, Cornelius, O'Brien, Banfield (delisted), Docherty, Karnezis, Polec, Yeo, Longer (trade)

Rookie list changes
OUT (4): Clarke (rookie elevation), Newell, Bartlett, Wrigley (delisted)

IN (1): Banfield

Max of three rookies to come.

With the rookie draft done, we've now made 13 changes to our playing list - almost 30% change in personnel. Some of it was forced, but this really allows Leppa to mould his own team and a fresh start. I'm excited.

It also says that we might need to be patient. New coach and significant personnel change (albeit not to the core of the side, Black excepted). I don't expect us to fly out of the blocks next year.

I do, Top Four!! (sorry, forgot this isn't the Carlton board)

I am actually pretty worried about what impact our list turnover will have on our performance next year. Almost 30% turnover in one year is massive. We all know the reasons, but still it can't be good for building a solid foundation straight away.

Does anyone know our list turnover figures in previous years? Also it would be great to know how we compare to other clubs on this. Somehow I have a feeling, while this year was by far the worst, we have had pretty high turnover in other recent seasons as well. At some stage you have to start bringing some stability to your list if you want to be a finals / top four contender.

Doesn't matter what the excuses are, if it doesn't come we are very unlikely to be successful.

.
I don't think it's as bad as all that. (not disputing the numbers).
But the turnover is of our list as opposed to our regular team.
Of the regular, say 25, we've only lost Black, Doc, Yeo and O'Brien. Even of those, Black missed a heap last year and J.O.B. only played a few.
In terms of structure and depth, we've lost very little.

I did a similar thread last year regarding the list changes made - http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/list-management-summary.974967/

Last year we had 7 off our senior list and 2 off our rookie list. We then added 5 onto their senior list, and two onto the rookie list.

Agree it shouldn't make TOO much difference.

Also Leppa may be inclined to dip youngsters in straight away as Richmond have done which could unearth a couple of quick beginners making a contribution.

So in the last two years we have turned over very close to half of our list. That is huge.

In terms of top 22 players we may have only lost 3, but it is the depth / and ability of everyone to gel that is the big worry. Before the exodus, with a new coach in Leppa I would have thought we definitely should make the top 8 next year given our potential. Now I am concerned we could be in for a mini-rebuilding period - not necessarily down the bottom of the ladder, but not a clear finals contender either.

The AFL website has all of the ins and outs of all the clubs now the drafts are over:
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-11-28/your-clubs-list-movements

Here is what the total turnover looks like for each club:
- Adelaide = 9
- Brisbane = 13
- Carlton = 10
- Collinwood = 10
- Essendon = 7 (which is pretty amazing)
- Freo = 8
- Geelong = 7
- Gold Coast = 6
- GWS = 13
- Hawthorn = 8
- Melbourne = 12
- North = 7
- Richmond = 7
- Port = 7
- Saints = 10
- Sydney = 9
- West Coast = 8
- Bulldogs = only 5!

So we had the equal largest turnover with GWS (who presumably had a longer list). The average list turnover was 8.7 players, which seems pretty high overall given it probably represents 20% of the AFL's playing list.

I have set out below a version of the replacements for all of our list changes and the overall impact is clear.

SENIOR LIST

Black
McKeever...replaced by Clarke
Cornelius....................Paine
Banfield......................Taylor
J.O'Brien
Docherty....................Robertson
Karnezis.....................McGuane
Polec...........,,,,,,,.......Aish
Yeo..............,,,,,,,......Cutler
Longer.......................West

ROOKIE LIST

Clarke...replaced by Smith
Newell...................Conway
Bartlett.........,,......Z.O'Brien
Wrigley

On the Senior list the retiring Black and the developing O'Brien (mids) have been replaced by KPF Freeman and Key defenders Gardiner and McStay...this move to tall overall is balanced a little by the replacemant of "main list ready" defender Wrigley from the Rookie list by the seemingly main list ready mid Z.O'Brien (mature age)...There seems to be optimism about the development of Hayes as well... The move to put a succession plan in place for our aging tall defenders is a wise and necessary move IMO.

We now have a bevy of KPF hopefuls to vie in 2014 to replace Brown when he retires and the long gone Mitch Clark and there is every incentive for these players to step up and claim these positions...this contest should continue until we again have dominant forwards like Lynch,Brown,Bradshaw and Clark on the list.

We are top heavy this year but I think it is a reasonable strategy to adopt. We haven't been able to get our hands on a really high rated KP forward via the draft or through trading. I think what we've then done is taken a punt on a few guys that we like the look of without necessarily being convinced of their long term worth. We've also picked up a couple of journeymen in Martin, West and McGuane to also provide ready to go options, albeit as fairly limited footballers.

I don't think this was for any moment Kerr's Plan A. We didn't really want to lose Clark. We showed in the last couple of years that we wanted Tippett. We also chased Hogan. I think that is the calibre of footballer we were hoping for, rather than Lisle, Paine and co.

We'll have a bit of flexiblity on our list going into the 2014 list management period. Brown will likely retire which not only opens up a spot on the list but also a tall forward spot in the best 22. Lisle and Martin come off contract. And we'll know a lot more about the likes of Close and Michael.
