Interesting.

Article praises him for his attitude throughout the whole period, but hard not to notice that this was literally announced in the last possible hour.

Can't imagine Banfield was happy to be delisted and rookied, particularly if he was contracted. I wonder what kind of negotiations had to happen.

Probably not but it's still preferable to being delisted. You'd think his manager would have ensured his contract payments match the original terms and he still gets the opportunity to revive his career. Let's hope he can do it.

Interesting that it was Banners chosen over someone like Wearden. Delisting a known quantity over an unknown one. They must see Wearden as getting some game time in the seniors this year. He also plays in a position that we are lacking in.
I don't know about the known/unknown thing. they've played in the same team all year. Having said that, it was the "known quantity" that put him in the reserves side.

It would of been "well we can delist you, pay you out and you go into the draft, keeping in mind that we have shopped you around for the last two years and we couldnt get 5-99 for you in a ten pack at Aldi. That's not 599k that's $5.99...or you can go on the rookie list."

I hope for his sake that he doesn't have Cal's luck, and that his trajectory isn't similar (Senior list -> Rookie list -> Goneski)

I don't think we've had anyone come back from the demotion (Garner went down too).

Did you read the rest of the post? I'm putting it out there that perhaps Wearden is seen as the better footballer in the eyes of the coaches. That's the part I find interesting.

It seems that it will go that way unfortunately.

We have a few players that have overtaken him in his role and he's not shown enough as a midfielder. Hope he gives it a good crack this year but it seems the odds are against him right now, even before we draft in any new players.

I did indeed read the whole post.:)
I was just contesting the "known/unknown" comment.
The rest of your post answers its own question really, as to why they would go that way, which I don't find surprising at all.:thumbsu:

Garner did his knee again as a rookie didnt he?

Hopefully Banfield realises this is the last chance and comes out firing

Only Corrie who was traded to Collingwood in 2008 for pick 93 which we did not use...it is not a good path to tread...which is not to say that there can't be exceptions.

So the final Maths are:

Senior List number 2013 -----------------39
Black retired-------------------------------38
9 were Traded/delisted--------------------29
Add Paine,West and McGuane------------32
Picks required for Freeman and Clarke---34
leaving 6 other picks for the draft..........40

I honestly can't think of anyone at any club recently who's gone from the senior list to the rookie list back onto the senior list. Was going to say Clancee Pearce but he was always a rookie until this year.

It's really the "we want to delist you, but since we're paying you anyway we might as well keep you around" move, isn't it.

The most punchable face in football.

Getting put on the rookie list is like when a girl tells a guy she would like an "open relationship".... there's no way you can go back from that
Or telling you she would like to remain "friends".

I feel for the guy. I think he is a tryer but i think the team has passed him. Had he not been under contract he would have been let go. As it is, we will have a full senior list and the only way off the rookie the list during the season will be long term injury. You would think only an injury to Green, Zorko or Beams (and we are all hoping against them) would see him get a shot at senior football next year.

Alternatively, we could delist Cornelius and a spot would open up. :D

I think you'd struggle to find a ressies watcher who was surprised by Banfield being demoted before Weardo.

Also, for Weardo's draft position and the acknowledged lack of exposure to elite programs it would be pretty rough to not keep him on the senior list when he would be considered to be developing on schedule.

On his exposed form, do you think that he could be close to coming into the senior team?

*shrug* depends what happens over pre-season and how they reconfigure the backline. He played Patfull's role, but has some flexibility so he might be in with a shot with Yeo's departure.

Having just watched the video of Aussies in the NFL, and just how cut-throat that competition is even for so-called established players, Banfield can consider himself extremely fortunate.

Hopefully he can use the near-death experience as a motivator, because if he is in the same position next year it is gonski for sure.

Showed a bit in the final at Aspley, but will have to do far, far more.
