From 'The Age"

"By the time he took over as coach, Buckley wanted Malthouse in the coaching box about as much as Malthouse wanted Buckley in the coaching box in his final two years as senior coach.

Staff and players from that time speak of Malthouse treating Buckley like an errand boy in those succession years when Buckley was an assistant. If Malthouse felt forced out he could hardly have been surprised"

Micks been sticking the needle to Collingwood since late in the 2011 season. Was a big fan of his prior to that time but he has dumped on my club. He is positive with some of the players he coached at Collingwood but I suspect hopes the rest of us fail.

Was unfortunate Nathan took his bait this time. Was on a hiding to nothing to speak out at this time. That’s Bucks biggest mistake in this relationship so far.

Still if you want to see the real MM and NB relationship before the coaching game crushed it look at this article

Ohttps://amp.couriermail.com.au/sport/afl/mick-malthouses-ultimate-team/news-story/b30e706ccb0ecf3370c05897c2637b2f

This piece came before the relationship breakdown and so is probably a more
accurate gauge of where MM really rates Bucks.

In this article and another at around the same time ( Age I think but can’t track it down) MM had Bucks as not only the best player he coached but also his best captain ahead of Worsfold.

It was a typical MM rewrite of Bucks history today to say ”He did his hamstring so I didn’t get a lot of him”. Truth was he coached Bucks for 8 seasons and 8 seasons as captain. He rated him the best player and best captain he coached before he fell out with him.

End of the day MM burnt a lot of bridges with the Collingwood faithful so I don’t really rate him.

Yeah I remember him saying that Buckley was the best player and captain he coached as well. Then to omit him and say he didn't have the best of him, that is really petulant behaviour from a man of his age.

One thing I'll always remember about Mick, they did an interview at his house and he had a wall size portrait of his own face. Not playing, not coaching, not celebrating a premiership, just his face. That probably tells us a lot.

Buckley is arguably the greatest Collingwood player of all time and also arguably the best player of his generation. Malthouse leaving him out smacks of sour grapes and is most definitely revisionist.

Malthouse had Buckley for 3 AA's, 2 Copeland's, a Brownlow and a Norm Smith. He actually had Buckley at his finest in the early years. No-one else he coached boasts those kind of individual honours and he led the team out in 2 grand finals...

So just the hamstring years?

Nathan addressed the comments today.
He left it there.

Now for the Big Freeze and freezing out the demons

Malthouse is a narcissist, it gives him great self belief, but when he's wrong he'd rather scorch the earth than admit it

You’ve hit the nail on the head.

He’s a proven liar and a disliked person by many dating back a lot of years.

I see today he doesn’t want to comment on Bucks because it has greatly upset his family, particularly Nanette. What a tosser. I can’t blame the woman if she really is upset, she probably feels like a beaten dog from all the mental manipulation she’s suffered.

He’s truely a disgusting human being. He’s a small man.

He won't answer cos he's got no answer for it...

Well done Malthouse, a passionate and successful coach. His players mostly loved him, and even the ones who didn't could usually work with him (Heath Scotland, someone I admire deeply was a rare exception).

At Richmond he kept massive egos in check as the leader of the backline after leaving the tragically flawed St Kilda.

At Footscray he got good footy from a poor list and helped Hardy to an undeserved Brownlow.

At West Coast he turned a talented bunch of gutless showponies into a murderous machine that probably should've won more flags.

At Collingwood he put the heart back into a proud club and after a generous contract extension won a brave flag with a mix of class and insanity.

At Carlton he was given no chance.

He may be the kind of guy that does toss people aside at times: Bucks is dead honest, and if he says Mick burned him it happened. No doubt Mick has his side of the story too, but it seems undeniable he could and did toss blokes under the bus. If you can drag yourself out of the self indulgent muck of Moorabbin and succeed at the selfish maelstrom of Richmond, if you can survive the pressure of a one club town in Perth and the pressure of the biggest club of all then you have character and ability. He must have flaws, but this is a Football Hall of Fame and he earned his spot as a coach who could get good football out of head cases as well as champs, and given a great list he produced great football.

Just a heads up for posters, if you want to have a go at Mick save your time on here and start a different thread. This is for positive comments and as it says “Universal love” for a man who took us from wooden spooners to a premiership so park the hate elsewhere.

He is the definition of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Was willing to self destruct our 2011 season because he wasn’t getting what he wanted.

Instead of having the sense to know the best revenge was to win a flag he couldn’t help himself and chose the childish path. To this day he still continues to behave like a spoiled 14yr old girl.

Yeah he only coached Bucks for 8yrs, none of them were his best years according to Mick....

I remember thinking as captain and coach they never got along.

He judged Bucks harshly when it came to the Copeland. 2002 Bucks finished 9th in the Copeland, if he was our 9th best player that year I’ll buy Mick some chips to go with his salt.

He spoke of the 2002 final against Port where Licuria got 42, but of those 42 only about 9 hit a target. He had his favourites who could do no wrong and the players he didn’t like who could do no right in his eyes.
