Consolidate Draft picks or not?

Rather keep multiple midrangers than a crapshoot high pick. Wells & co seem to be better in that mid range.

One determinant as to whether we trade up is how many list positions we need to fill. At the moment, we are none the wiser as to whether Clark and Krueger are coming or going (assume Krueger is most likely gone) and whether Dahl is retiring as has been suggested. Brownless? Constable? Fort? Still a bit up in the air.

I will find it very strange should Fort finish in the VFL top three when he was given no opportunities in the AFL despite our injuries and weaknesses in the ruck position. It would mean he is beating most of the other VFL rucks. What more could he do!

Be better than Stanley/Ratugolea/Blicavs.

VFL is the key word here. A very good VFL and SANFL ruckman and thats where it stops for me.

People overate high draft picks way too much. They are nice too have but nothing to sell the farm for.

And using Melbourne as an example of success via draft is horrible because they have been in no mans land for not 5 but 15 years. For every Petracca, Oliver and Salem there is a Watts, Toumpas or Trengrove.

Melbournes improvement has largely come from improvement behind the scenes and improving their culture and the way they develop their young talent.

Gawn, Fritsch, Spargo, Rivers, Sparrow, Jordan, Petty these picks in the 30s make up your side. It’s gonna be a long painful way back to the top if we want to get 5 or 6 top 10 picks in our team.

We will be needing to rebuild our team soon so I would much rather take our 3 picks to the draft than cash em in for pick 10-15 who could still be did anyway.

Particularly this year when there hasn’t been a great deal of exposure for the junior talent it could be a great opportunity to pick some sliders in the second round a well.

Exactly this... Melbourne have been bad for so long, thar eventually they had to come good sooner or later. 15-20 years of sitting down the bottom getting 100+ point beltings... Seeing 4-6 wins a year... No thanks.

Melbourne is not a role model to follow.

not to mention this is their second time around absolutely fluffed their first go

I wouldn't mind consolidating two picks to get us a bit earlier in the draft. There is always a slider we can take later on.

Reading lots on this and other forums about the potential strategy in this year and next years draft.

STRATEGY ONE

GOAL = One bonafide elite pick, capable of scoring the "Petracca" level talent which almost exclusively hangs out in top 5 picks.

HOW = just trade Clark/Krueger/Fort for whatever you can get, then bundle groups of picks to clubs desperate for points, and if not a high 1st rounder this year, try and lock in a bottom 4 teams 2022 1st rounder

STRATEGY TWO

GOAL = As quickly as possible get a crop of same aged, decent players in and get them bonding

HOW = hold out the Clark deal, demand a top 20 pick, then use that plus the other 4 and hopefully get 3-4 regular starting 22 players within a couple of years from that.
Picks in the 30's are not spuds, but they are also not "Petracca" level talent.

I'm on board for Strategy one.... you guys?
Top 10 picks will find their way onto our list.

Strategy 2 please

I’m coming around to this now. Think we should otherwise we risk a Jarvis/Kennelly type draft haul.
Yeah, exactly... If we can get inside Top 30 with 3 picks somehow, then its great. If we offload Fort and Clark for picks, pick upgrades, its possible. Kreuger might get us draft capital for next season.
