Have you read Gavin Menzies stuff like 1421?

I think i own it and haven't gotten around to reading it but isn't it considered junk history?

Thor Heyerdahl and the Kon-Tiki expedition might be more to the point.
Only read about that in primary school. Recollection is dim.

1421 is just an example of the types of contact that were lost to history, giving Europeans the idea that they “discovered” places.

Yes, I read Menzies (and also his sequel, I think).
Good yarn, but like all of those sort of books, it takes massive work to check his sources and compare what professional experts say about them and the events.

Not really surprising at all. If they managed to get that far across the ocean that long ago, inhabiting a lot of the good spots, then chances are some explorers or desperate exiled types braved the empty eastern horizon from time to time and eventually came into contact pre-Colombus (assuming it wasn't the indigenous coming out to them). Nice to have some hard evidence of interaction though.
