A new contender has emerged. Freo are a dangerous beast. 2nd best side of late by far.

So many of their matches have come down to a coin toss (five matches with a margin of 7 points or less) that it's difficult to tell where they are. They certainly have a bunch of very strong results (like away wins v GWS and Collingwood) and some poor ones (like losing to Gold Coast).

In such a tight comp, being a true 4th quarter team is going to have us ahead on the close game ledger but I think we are still a class below Geelong, Tigers (with most of their players back), West Coast and Pies at their best. Obviously Geelong is the only one consistently bringing that which gives us a chance against everyone. We might even run the Cats close in Perth.

You'd have to be a fairly optimistic Freo fan to be cancelling your late September plans at this stage.

Loving the build up to this round. The Coasters tackle the joker in the pack Dons who got them a year ago in this same fixture handing the Eagles their second straight defeat. The Eagles will be weary as they were jumped in the opening term, just as the Dons will be brimming with confidence after what they achieved that Thursday Night.

Swannies tackle the Hawkers after two memorable tight affairs last year and two more the one before that. Ronke nailed 7 majors on a Friday night and in the return fixture the Hawkers got up by 9 against a Buddy-less Swans that pushed them into the top 4 and the Swans out of it.

Melbourne against an inform Freo at the G where the Dockers look to continue their winning ways. The Demons have been competitive at times and threw away the points to the Crows and were their own worst enemy against the Pies on the Queens Birthday. The Dees could upset the Dockers. Or they could get poleaxed and Freo continue on their merry way. Nothing would surprise.

Port vs Geelong and another beauty. The Power hit some good mid-season form a year ago beating the Tige's and Dees who both ventured far into the 2018 finals. Great for 3 quarters against Freo and right in the hunt for pretty much the entirety of that game. Capable of beating the ladder leading Catters who could potentially lose just it's second game in 2019. An interesting stat is Geelong has lost 9 of their last 10 match's coming off a bye.

Bullies vs Pies to round out the weekend and it went down to the wire when they first clashed in the early rounds. Collingwood hasn't tasted defeat at Marvel since 2017 and look to maintain second position behind Geelong. 7 straight wins before losing at the death to Freo then an unconvincing win over the Dees. With the Stephenson betting scandal the Pies might want to burn off some steam against the Doggies who are trying to stay within touching distance of the pack. Another loss here and they remain further adrift.

Get amongst it!

Hawks next games are WCE and Pies at the G, Freo in Tassie, Geelong, Brizzy, North and GWS. Host Gold Coast then finish off facing WCE away.

I still believe they're going to claim some big scalps. Out of the next 4 I think they can steal 2.

Dons as mentioned will get some decent wins on the way also, just not sure when.

Going to be a cracking 10 rounds or so.

We are still **** so yeah

Not at all. A few posts above, I did say Melb could win. They weren't bad against the Pies and could have beaten both WCE and Adelaide. The Dees have a s**t record but in some games weren't bad at all ( others yes also horrendous )

Freo will be ok. Tough at the G 2 rotations down. Many of the better sides are going to get rolled unexpectedly.

As I said, Dees and Port very capable.

Many more upsets to occur.

Dons vs GWS what a Thursday Night Belter! Adrenaline charged game that one. Dons playing for their season and have been known to play a fast paced game there at times against a side that will need to make a statement if they're going to be contenders this year. If the Giants lose here they won't be taken seriously, If the Dons lose it's pretty much pack up shop in season 2019.

GWS lose again in Melbourne to a side struggling to get into the 8. Overrated at this stage.

Only a prem will quieten the doubters.

Re top 4 hopefuls and finals aspirants.

Teams form obviously will go up and down again as it always does. Last year GWS, Adelaide, Melbourne and the Bombers all went on runs. The Crows got their season back on track and were in contention for finals only to see it fall short near the end. The Giants put paid to their hopes with a win late on. Port faltered near the end but were right in the hunt and seemed destined for top 4. North squandered their chances, and the Eagles regrouped after losing 3 straight after winning 10.

Which teams are going to have a red hot patch of form or take some big scalps? Could the Bombers be one of them? Are the Crows going to have a massive second half of the season? It could even be Freo despite their mounting injury list. Whoever wins the clash between them and Port will walk 6 feet taller. At least for another week. The Hawks are another side who will knock at least a couple of the big guns over.

A very dangerous season indeed.

What, so you're quoting yourself with nothing to add? No shame hey? Anything for another pointless bump of your thread....

GWS this season

Unconvincing yet still hyped. The game was obviously not at the G but they struggled again as they did against the Hawks in Melbourne. Another loss to a side not in the top 8. Other losses were against the Eagles, Freo in Canberra and Adelaide away.

Still have to face

Bris
Rich MCG
Coll
Port A.O
Swans
Hawks

Then finish with the Dogs and Gold Coast. Right at this point in time GWS have only beaten one side currently in the 8 ( us ) and Essendon sit 9th who beat them last night. They beat the Bombers in round 1.

Their other wins

Melb
Carl
Gold Coast
Sydney
Richmond ( depleted )
North
Saints

You're right. I don't understand your point. WC did what they needed at the MCG to win a flag (which is the only thing that matters) despite many saying it wouldn't happen. The same is entirely possible with regard to GWS.
We knocked off a couple of big scalps including Collingwood at the G during the home and away season. That got roundly ignored by the WCE cant win away crowd but it was important for us mentally as we approached the GF. IMO GWS still need to break that hoodoo

That run of gws coupled with their loss last night and inability to win away could open the door to one more spot in the top 4... beware the wounded tiger.

You'd need to win all 9 games. Not happening.
