We've started off as favourites for next year.

Despite the loss this year, I still felt we were the most dominant side and, as it happens, injuries and suspensions got us at the end.

Sparing a similar bad run with injuries next year, I don't see why we shouldn't be outright favourites for the 2012 flag. Back-to-back dream is gone, now it's time for redemption.

Who do you think our nearest threats will be?

My top 4 rivals, in ranking order:

West Coast:

Their team is strikingly similar to ours in that they have a wonderful evenness across the field and a solid spine. Another year under their belt, their younger bodies stronger, I don't expect them to tire out so quickly as they did in this year's finals series.

Also a rich club with top notch facilities and excellent player management staff, they are the Collingwood of WA and I tip them to rise up a level next year.

Hawthorn:

Their injuries this year were a blessing in disguise, as the Hawks were able to reveal some star young guns on their list. They'll give the Hawks some needed depth that has been lacking in recent years, and given a decent run of injuries, should give the top a shake.

I still have concerns for their backline, even with the likes of Stratton in, when facing the talls of Collingwood, Geelong and West Coast. The Buddy factor doesn't appear to intimidate the top sides, but their midfield has shown it can match it with anyone.

Geelong:

As we saw this year, you can never write off the Cats. They don't even need a coach, they just know so perfectly how each other play, and show great trust and confidence in their teammates.

Their older bodies (the ones that have persisted to stay on) will start to ache, and will probably resemble the Brisbane Lions of 2004. Still a mighty team, but age does kick in at some point.

Their younger players will need to step up as the team transitions into a new list.

Their midfield is the best on par with ours, and won't allow the team to slide as many might be expecting.

Carlton:

They haven't proven anyone's expectations wrong.

They've steadily risen over recent years, and can only go higher.

I was a bit shocked to see them not as active in trade week. They're in desperate need of a KPP up forward.

Carlton's small forward line might destroy lesser sides, but it has struggled against the top defences.

Until they get some real marking power up forward (and not solely rely on the unreliable Waite), I can't see them taking out the prize.

Just as we recruited Ball and Jolly to get us over the line, the Blues will need to do the same.

Smokey - Fremantle:

New proven coach, reinvigorated list, a solid pre-season, and good luck with injuries should see Freo come out of the shadows.

Top 4 next year will be;

Cats
Pies
Hawks
Blues

I reckon the Eagles rely too heavily on too few (Glass, Kerr and Cox) and if even one of them misses a large period of games, they will miss top 4.

Freo are the same also, if Pavlich or Sandilands go down for any extended period, it's bye bye to any top 4 hopes.

Sydney might be a smoky, they have 2 walk up wins vs GWS, and will then need to win 12 out of their remaining 20 games to push for top 4, a big chance if they can find a consistent key forward. Goodes won't go backwards (he'll still be going in 3 years IMO), and they have a very good bunch of young tough mids coming through.

St Kilda are the other top 4 contender, they have lost little from the teams that made the Grand Finals, and if Hayes can come back, and with a renewed enthusiasm under Watters, they could push for 3rd or 4th.

Still can't see the Cats going backwards too much even without a few of their older heads. Have to remember that while Milburn and Mooney are retiring, they didn't even play in their GF team. Gillies looks good for them, and with the likes of Menzel (LTI i know), Duncan and Christensen all good players as well they'll stay up around the top for a while yet.

I know a lot of people said this last year, but I can't see Geelong being a contender next year. No doubt they'll finish in, or close to, the top 4, but they won't have the same sting.

Top four next year will be:
Pies
Hawks
Blues
Eagles

Cats will finish around 5th or 6th, with Freo also finishing close to the top 4.

Cats : will still be thereabouts. Christensen & Duncan are role players like our own Blair, Macaffer were in our premiership year. Given how rubbihs the comp will be next year, the Cats will again be able to rest many of their Dads army and still win enough games to make top 4. FRom there it's who is in the best shape.

Hawks : Most overrated injury toll of any team. They played the top 8 teams only 8 times. Geelong the only one twice. Of their best 22 only Roughead and Gilham were missing at the business end of the season. They'll be thereabouts but |I wouldn't expect them to perform much better then what they did.

cheats : Will win plenty of games due to ordinary teams outside the top 5/6. I just can't see where they can beat us. Quick dangerous small forwards but how many times do small forwards dominate in finals.

Eagles : I expect a similar year. Their midfield is just a notch below the others.

Smokey : Fremantle. Now they had a dreadful injury run. Will need a bit to go right as also a little light on compared to others midfields.

How do you reconcile this with the fact Geelong spanked us 3 times this year?

Geelong lose a few like wojo ling ottens enright chapman u cant argue they'll deff be a fair degree worse next year. Plus Barlet and Kelly get older and worse

which ones of these have actually retired? Bartel ain't getting any worse either, and Kelly had probably his best season this year.

All of the top 8 from 2011 (maybe not Saints, and Essendon would be stretching it) could finish top 4. From outside of the 8 Freo is the obvious one but I think Melbourne could quite easily make the finals. A new coach, new recruits, their playing list is already decent.

It's obvious to say Cats/Hawks/Eagles/Blues, but they're good teams, so why not?

The AFL goes in cycles Ed.

Collingwood, Hawthorn, Bulldogs, Saints and Geelong were the top 5, semi-finalists, and preliminary finalists from 2007-2010.

This year we saw the teams that were taking the leap, and those falling off.

The top teams don't just dominate for a season, they continue while they're at their peak and their window is open.

I don't expect much movement in the top 5 next year.

I'm not too sure why you quoted me to say that. I basically said I don't see much change to our main challengers who are Cats/Hawks/Eagles/Blues.
