Hawthorn had dominant defensive lines, thats how they got away with not being in front in clearances...

It would be nice to have their defence but we dont. We have a collection of undersized Dads Army, Dumb & Dumber and Gilligans Island survivors.

Dads Army = Fisher & Dempster
Dumb & Dumber = Geary & Gilbert
Gilligans = Roberton & Webster.

Interesting but how do we win with unimaginative coaching? O love your positivity.

geeze thank god we have you here to clear that one up and to think the rest of us plebs were thinking the score didnt matter!!!

Its called a joke. Maybe people really need to stop taking themselves so seriously. Wow. I actually think people really think they have this coaching caper covered. I have no idea why people would respond to me because I have no idea. I think others should also realise they may have no idea.

How do you get the ball to the outside if you don't win the ball on the inside

i have been trying to get a handle on how the new game plan works and as far as I can tell we often lose the clearance but pressure the player who has it into hand balling or kicking under pressure then winning a turn over from the contest.

A lot of the stats don't tell the full story, the clearance is just winning it from the tap, what happens next is more important. a clearance that is won then carried 70 meters and kicked straight to the FF is much more valuable than one that turns over but seen as the same thing.

So why do you think Alan Richardson was so concerned about contested footy and clearences in his press conference? I'd suggest he knows more than all of us on here.

So do I. My point was we got killed in that area yesterday and I said that. My other point is it really hasn't been a big issue this year and that is why I gave the yearly stats and not just the one game stats which again we won by 30 points.

richo has highlighted it as an area of concern for a while now... so who is wrong here? you or him?

Plugger it wouldnt matter if we had Donald Trump coaching the side you would be satisfied.

I just want you to tell us why he is unimaginative. If you know this I want to see you skills in coaching a side. I think you used words without any idea why but I could be wrong. I'm doubting it though.

Yes that's right, against the bottom side who hasn't won a game. We also lost the inside 50's and I think we were lucky to get the momentum back and win.

Do you no think it would be an advantage to get first hands on the ball and have the chance to get the footy up our end instead of the oppositions?
Do you really think it wad luck to kick 8 4th qtr goals?
Just dumb luck?

No doubt. But I don't think we even had to look at the stats to realise we seem disadvantaged in the middle do we? Not only do we struggle to get it forward at times but when we do it's often ugly and hard work for our forwards.

Now I know we still have some quality to add in our midfield before we are a contender but two years ago this wasn't an area that I thought would be a major problem with the inside mids that we have.

I have no idea what happens in the coaches box and I don't claim to be an expert, but Richardson talks about it often enough for me to know that he thinks it's an issue.

Do we just have to wait until we get better midfielders or is a coaching issue?

if you listen to ross's presser he sights them falling away in clearances in the 4th as one of the reasons why they lost the game

i think we need to improve but quality ball using running players would be nice to play off the wing. The inside mid thing we probably need to stop overloading on and just see what we have got after playing them. Ross has had to move to an outside game and Armo was playing as a defensive forward last week so we can't be too concerned. Acres is looking like he can develop into that inside tall mid but we are reluctant to play him the moment his output drops.

No not all mate. As Richo said in his press conference, we managed to shut down Neale who was dominating in the midfield with his contested footy and clearances and our midfield got on top.

I think the final score wasn't a true reflection on the game though, and momentum is a funny thing.

I'm not trying to sound like one of those whinging posters that I often get the shits with, but it is the one area of our game that I'm surprised hasn't improved as much as I would have expected.

I agree with Ross.
But it wasnt luck that won us the game. Watch Steven and Armo at the ball ups in qtr4cand where Hickey was tapping it.

There were other factors but luck was not one of them

To me it looks as though Armo is carrying a back injury - can anyone confirm? I seem to remember something mentioned early in the pre-season.

He hurls himself into the contest when needed but not all game long. I think he's managing it.

Jack S is having a great season IMHO. Seb is developing great consistency and Luke is fantastic in patches.

oh i agree with that, i dont think us wrestling back control was luck. but we have to remember freo's inside mids are pretty depleted.

the large lapses in that game are a massive concern. if we want to win a flag, we have to improve quite significantly and thats my concern. i cant see armitage or steven improving out of sight in that regard. armitage because of age and steven because he's not quite an inside mid IMO

ross and dunstan still have time to improve

I'm not sure this is entirely true, i hate to think of the kind of money Riewoldt was offered over the years.

Having said that he wouldn't be the first to jump off that sinking ship.
I think it is, Ablett left Geelong for plenty.
Scully left Melbourne for coin
Boyd left GWS for coin
Need I go on?
Look I'm not saying we've got Rockliff in the bag I'm saying try and recruit him next year

Didn't we win by 30 points whilst getting killed in clearances?
It doesnt hurt you as much against lesser teams because even when they get first use they have trouble turning that into scores.
Come on plugger u should know that.. against good sides clearances make a big difference.

Usually the only time "luck" is involved in changing momentum is when the umps get involved ( see game against Hawks). The rest of the time it's generally due to digging in and working bloody hard.

You know what they say... Luck is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration!
