Didn't realise this thread was here before I posted on the trades thread.

Is Adam Kingsley the right man for the job?

We have won the clearance count twice all year. Round 1 against Port and then not again until the Bombers.

I realise we lack quality but most of the mids we have drafted have been inside mids, we should be much better than we are.

We are 12th overall in clearances and 8th in cetre clearances and the gap between us and the top is bugger all. Maybe up there with hit outs as an overated stat.

There's a few options;

Draft: Brodie, Scharenberg, Clarke, Poholke.

Trade: Steele; orrrr....

And here's a novel idea; be patient! Armo's having a bit of a down year, Stevo's doing ok, but Dunstan, Ross and Acres are all young.

We'll get there.

armitage is 27, he had a great year last year but over the course of his career that probably bucked the trend. are we really expecting him to improve out of sight? how much more patience do you want people to show here?

How is getting first use of the footy an overrated stat?

Because it means jack unless you know what happens after you get it. Hawthorn have won the last 3 flags and in that time they have finished 7th, 1st and 14th on clearances. Can anyone explain what that proves?

they are the clearance stats from the last 3 grand finals. not one had a massive diff in center clearances that we are seeing in our games.

contested possession is also very important as you can see. anyone got our contested ball stats this year?

Best place for all this stuff is the AFL website and then other stats. As for massive differences in our games well it cant be that bad if we are 3 off the top. That's three quarters a quarter and unless I mussed it we won yesterday whilst getting beaten in that stat so it doesn't seem vital.

Maybe it just means that they have less stoppages than the rest?

I think looking at it round by round would be a better way. We have only beaten two teams this year (one being the Bombers) but somehow we sit 12th and 8th.

I think we'd be silly to just look at the stats alone, I'm not a stats guru but it is obvious to me that it is a big problem for us.

Didn't we win by 30 points whilst getting killed in clearances?

Round 1 (L Port) Lost contested ball 177 to 166
Round 2 (L WB) Lost contested ball 137 to 102
Round 3 (W Pies) Lost contested ball 144 to 126
Round 4 (L Hawks) Won contested ball 152 to 139 (note: hawthorns well documented contested ball issues)
Round 5 (L GWS) Lost contested ball 153 to 129
Round 6 (W Melb) Won contested ball 148 to 138
Round 7 (L Norf) Lost contested ball 145 to 136
Round 8 (L WCE) Lost contested ball 150 to 137
Round 9 (W Dons) Won contested ball 131 to 116
Round 10 (W Cockburn Ferals) Lost contested ball 138 to 127

how hasn't this attracted more attention? we are getting absolutely spanked in there

Yes that's right, against the bottom side who hasn't won a game. We also lost the inside 50's and I think we were lucky to get the momentum back and win.

Do you no think it would be an advantage to get first hands on the ball and have the chance to get the footy up our end instead of the oppositions?

Probably because that is another ordinary stat. Outside ball seems more important now or actually n0ne of them as long as you are close.

I am really unsure it matters unless its a genuine real clearance.

ive never once heard a coach say contested ball and clearances are not important... why do you feel they aren't? do you have anything to support this?

I didn't say they aren't important. I'm saying you need to look at all stats as a group. No one stat means you win or lose games apart from the final score stat.

No ones saying that this one stat is the reason we win or lose a game. We have lost the contested footy and still won games. Surely you can see that it is an advantage though, or you'd have to wonder why we haven't just drafted outside runners.

Every stat can be important but not one stat makes you win or lose games unless there is a big advantage. Hawthorn have never been a real contested side. Sydney are. Stats are amazing things. You can find many to support your argument,

when did anyone suggest that was the case?

i am confused as to what you actually arguing here... are you concerned with our contested possession and clearance?

No I'm not and that is why I'm arguing it. I would have thought that was obvious. The only stat that worries me at the moment is the final score stat. The last time a side lost a game with that stat being level or ahead was us about 10 years ago

I don't know. Ask the Hawks.

Hawthorn had dominant defensive lines, thats how they got away with not being in front in clearances...

It would be nice to have their defence but we dont. We have a collection of undersized Dads Army, Dumb & Dumber and Gilligans Island survivors.

Dads Army = Fisher & Dempster
Dumb & Dumber = Geary & Gilbert
Gilligans = Roberton & Webster.
