Didn't Swallow extend earlier this year?

Would be good to see a few more boys sign on for that long!

Swallow signed at the end of last year (2010) for three years, so that takes him through to the end of 2013. Zac Smith is the same.

Really good that we're starting to re-sign the kids before their contracts are even close to expiring. Seems we're handling the salary cap pressures well. Day still had a year left on his contract, I think?

Wow, huge day for the club. Sam Day til the end of 2014 is massive... lets a big bodied forward develop with no timeframe pressure at all.

You'd think now the list/contract balance is rock solid for a tilt and the big thing in a few years. There's a number of interstate kids getting around and the 'go home' is always a factor, but the way I see it, the likes of Swallow, Day etc will be too close to a premiership next time negotiations kick in. Who could turn their back on that?

Call me cocky and jumping the gun a bit - but with the talent and age of our young list could be a couple of flags.

If GWS play their cards right the AFL could become a bit of a 2 horse race (muck like Chelsea/Man United) for about 5-6 years.

Time will tell:)

Not to mention being part of history as a brand new football club.

A lot of people carry on about the go home factor...I would expect anywhere up to 5-10 players over the next 5 years asking to be traded...only because they aren't in the best 25-28 players and looking for better opportunities. But do you think thats going to be Swallow? O'Meara, Mckenzie, Day, Smith, Prestia, Caddy, Weller, Bennell??
They will be starting, and being a part of history. You would seriously be ******ed to ignore this.

Question marks I'm not so sure about.

In the tv interview with Day, he said he saw himself as fairly loyal, and would be happy to stay here on the Coast as long as the club wanted him. Also said his parents, and more significantly, his Girlfriend were all back in South Australia.
We all know Ablett is in the same situation, so it says a lot about his character. :thumbsu:

So do we now chase a couple of hardened bodies to fill the deficiencies we saw this season or do we simply put up with the frustration while the kids mature over the next cpl years?

Personally I really do hope we trade a cpl of our earlier picks and secure a Matty Warnock down back to take some pressure of Bocks body and a strong 6 foot fwd flanker type to help convert those forward entries more often... Maybe someone with the tank to also rotate through the midfield if required?

I still think we can probably do with Fraser, Brennan, Stanley as our experienced bodies in the forward line...Take Brennan out of the midfield rotations so regularly.

I dont mind the Warnock trade, I would think we could offer a 3rd round and probably snag him

trade for a forward..any forward.
If we relist Coad..a back line of Harbrow Bock Brown Coad Thompson and Hutchins works for me.

Saw another random tweet this morning regarding Suns and Zac Dawson... No idea of truth or maybe it's to see who offers best deal with Warnock/Dawson as they are identical types of players really.

And still a few random trade tweets about Suns and Josh Jenkins from the Bombers... Why we would want yet another ruckman beats me. Kids only played 2 games and didn't even get a disposal in the 2nd game!

Ok he's one to toss up...

Bluey McKenna our Inaugural coach is up for contract renewel next year. What are people's opinion?

I really rate the way he handles conferences, its no BS. Probably one of the top few coaches in press conferences, a little bit of smart ass, looks you in the eye, and doesn't talk rubbish, not afraid to single blokes out and put the hard word on. I was worried probably about this time last year. After his first year as a senior level coach, I couldn't see anyone else coaching this crop at the moment. Deserves a 2-3 year extension in my opinion, should take us to about 2014-15.

Probably wouldn't want the contract extension any longer because the kids would have developed substantially by then and will definitely get a guage on selection processes, gold passes for players, and tactics and strategies on game day.

To give him only 2 years at the top level would be a waste of 2 years. They will extend his contract, unless we have an absolutely terrible year. Then I would be a bit doubtful.

Obviously the players and staff would be a better judge of how well he coaches with the strategies and the like, but I think the way he's moulding our group will be benficial for the future.

Hope he re-signs until around 2014-15 too.

Pretty sure 90% of people would be happy with him, regardless of our win/loss ratio this year and probably 2012...

Is there anything we DON'T like about him as supporters and members?

For me, its a no, and I guess probably already answering my own question in that we haven't seen enough of him perhaps to warrant that kind of judgement.

I'm a big fan of the way Bluey and the whole football dept have implemented strong policies and core beliefs for the club as a whole to develop a great culture so players want to play here, want to do the right thing and want to succeed.
There hasn't been any pussyfooting around to please individual players, as everyone has to buy into the program. With such a young list they've done a great job from addressing Harley's early indiscretion, to the punishment handed down to Campbell for the Thailand incident, and sticking to their guns when Essendon tried to lure JC away.
Next year's results will probably determine the length of his contract extension but IMO, on what he has achieved so far, he definitely deserves to coach here beyond 2012.
We'll no doubt get a better gauge of his tactical nouse as the team becomes more settled. 6+ wins and a more competitive showing on a weekly basis should guarantee him an extension I'd like to think. If we somehow go backwards next year and have a season from hell (just can't see it happening - too much scope for improvement in our list), then it could be touch and go.

Considering its his final year of contract 2012 at this stage, would it be better to have a result or decision by mid season. So there isn't as much of a circus at the end of year like a few of the clubs have had this year.

My preference is around the first 1qtr of the year...so about round 5 or 6?

Bluey in an article in the West Australian saying he is 'very confident' that they can retain Harley.

Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna is confident the club will retain exciting West Australian Harley Bennell beyond 2012

We're confident that our program and our structure and our community around the football club will see Harley through. The more he stays there, the more comfortable he becomes as a person.

"As a player, we're under no illusions how good his talent is. We're very confident he'll stay and play some really good football for the Gold Coast going forward."

I'd say he could be one of the ones about to get extended with those comments.

While Harley was homesick at the start of the year, I think he became far more comfortable in the second half of the season as he grew more accustomed to life on the Coast. The moved in with Karmichael really helped. He looks happier than he ever did and seems to have found good friends at the Suns. Looking forward to him being a 10 year player for the Suns! Just as he said he would be. ;)

Good signs. If he continues living with Hunt, I reckon he'll resign at or before the halfway point in the season.

If his management are clever they will hold out until late in the season and wait for the offers to start rolling in ;) Freo and Eagles will surely make a nice bid for him... Even if he is keen to stay at the Suns, it will put him in the box seat to bump up his contract.

I reckon Eagles and Freo would be pretty maxed out with their playing list and their up and coming young fellas to keep a hold of?

Its the bottom clubs you worry about poaching, the clubs with NO stars, or ageing list. Bulldogs? Melbourne? Essendon? Port?

I think they are the clubs that will strike if they are clever enough. The other 12-14 clubs have average -> excellent lists where they would be pretty full on the salaray cap? Hawthorn, Collingwood, Geelong, St Kilda, Carlton.
