I cant see any club picking him up unless he sorts his mental and personal issues out. I dont think there would be a spot on WC or Freo's list. They both have pretty bloody good lists and should make the top 8 in 2012 reasonably comfurtable I reckon.

After kicking that bag against Brisbane really thought we might've had something special on our hands. Guess not :(.

We did, he has a massive skill set. Just not the mental application and desire for the game.

I kinda harped on him most of the year that I thought he was in our best 22 players. But if you dont want to play, you dont want to play. Each to their own:(

Looks like Hunt is set to re-sign a new contract with the Suns passed 2012. Figure of around $400k per year... Double what I think he is worth as a player at this stage... And takes a fair chunk of salary cap that could be spent on a kid? Also talk AFL may keep him partially on their books aswell as a promotions player, so guess he will pick up maybe another $100k a year?... Then sponsorship $$$... Not bad for a dude that is only on the fringe of our best 22! ;)

What do we think? Is Hunt worth this much cash out of our cap?

I wouldn't take much notice of the figures given in that article. $400,000 in an Andrew Hamilton article could mean $250,000 - $300,000 in all reality. It's probably the AFL promotions package that will still be where the major chunk of K's income comes from. If he continues to improve at the rate he has so far, and continues to do such a great job off-field (incl. mentoring Harley B.), I'm more than happy to keep him. He could develop into a handy strike weapon and protect our youngsters for the next few years until they fill out completely. From watching some of his games in the NEAFL, he's already a very good and damaging player at that level. It will be very interesting to see how he goes in 2012 with increased competition for spots and his increased fitness base. One thing is for sure, K is definitely a pro in his preparation and attitude. If only Nathan K had the same mindset.

I too am all for keeping the campaigner, but I just hope the club doesn't get bent over a barrel in doing so. If we do end up paying him in the vicinity of 400k ( which has been reported by 2 journos so guessing it has come from his manager) it would surely put him in the top 5 paid players at the club... Is he one of our top 5 players, hell no.

Yes he is doing a great job babysitting Bennell, has become a popular figure amongst fans and has shown glimpses he has enough talent to become a serviceable senior player in the future, but shouldn't he be paid on his current skill level, not paid because he is a popular rugby player, especially now we are paying his salary which affects our cap, and our ability to offer more skillful young players the $$$ needed to keep them next season.

I think we should be paying him like any 2nd year player, and if the AFL want him as a poster boy, then they can pay him. He is currently being payed 3 mil for basically 2 seasons of footy, so surely if he loves the club so much he can't expect to be paid like an experienced senior AFL player when he isn't one? ;)

I think that this is probably what is really happening. Clayton, Ashcroft and Auld etc. aren't dummies and the AFL is watching over us very carefully to ensure that we run a very tight ship and are successful. If the AFL need to chip is 200K per year for K to continue his promo role then I think Vlad would find that money well spent. K doesn't strike me as a Mitch Clark type player who makes decisions based on money first. He doesn't need the money after his last contract and current sponsorships he has. It's the challenge that excites him and I think he is really enjoying the challenge of becoming a legitimate AFL player. If he can get a bit more of the ball this year and average say 15 possessions (up from his 8 possessions per game in 2011), he'll have done really well.

I honestly believe Hunt improved dramatically over the course of the season. Showed some real signs of what he could become, and am very keen to see how much he improves next year too.

400k is acceptable, I think. Wasn't that what Krakouer was on? I think he's been more key for us than Krakouer, personally. So yeah, not a problem that he's on this amount.

With Krakouer gone anyway, and most of the big contracts front loaded, we should have enough cap room to sign away the rest of the young stars. It's been made quite clear in trade week that we won't be spending big enough to not keep the young guns.

YES (Insert Fist Pump here)

The other clubs wont be able to get him now :D

In all seriousness now I think 400k is a bit of a stretch for what he is worth. I see his greatest abilities are off the field really, as a general leader of professional sport, sets a great example off field. He is not a 400k footballer though.

i would have posted the karl stefanovic gif but i think it got deleted last time :p

if he'll be on around Krak's 400k, i guess that's okay. if part of his contract relates to continuing to mentor Bennell whilst living with him, then we'd better sign Hunt for life. :)

2012 List

Just spotted the new list for player profile on the website.

Anyway my basic maths show that we effectively have 51 players on the 2012 list. This allows for the addition of O'Mears (not on list) and the removal of Krakouer (still on list).

I understand that GCS have to have a list of 44 players in 2013 (please correct me if I am wrong).

Also AFL rules mean that 2 new players must be added to the list in 2013.

All this said, it highlighlights how tough it is be kept on the list.

It would be an interesting exercise to see if anyone has a list on all players and when their contracts expire.

This would allow fans to track those playing for a list spot in 2013.:(

If Caddy and Bennell do not resign at seasons end which is likely to be discussed all season, that starts cutting the list down. Possibility Fraser may retire upon contract completion this season, unless the club thinks they need his bigger body for a 1-year extension?

Rookies for 2012

Excuse my ignorance, however are there any other rookies on the 2012 list other than Horsley, McQualter, Coad and Hall.

:)

Hall was elevated. None others spring to mind though.

Re: Rookies for 2012

Josh Hall is on the rookie, list Aaron Hall was chosen in the pre-season draft, meaning he is on our main list. Besides the others listed, there aren't any other rookies.

Thanks for the 2 posts. it is really appreciated.

I think all Rookies are 1 year only. Allen, Jackson, A Hall & Schade get the standard 2 years.

I do not wish to seem all "dark & gloomy" but with the list in 2013 having to be 44 full list & 9 rookies down from 48 full list & 9 rookie in 2012 (AFL rules), there has to be the inevitable delistings.

Also I imagine there will be an attempt by GCS to extend contracts of those players deemed "keepers".

This will further decrease the number of players who are on the list that may be delisted

I believe most Suns fans are well prepared for the 4 that need to be cut. When you count in draft picks and such, I think that's an extra few that need to be?

There may be some that retire at the end of next year (Fraser), but there's a handful of others I could probably find that will need to lift their game, less they get delisted.

Thanks Sunny, your calculations seem to be spot on. Your list indicates that there are approximately 23 players that will be out of contract at the end of 2012.

Effectively in 2012 we have 46 full listed players and 4 rookies.

In 2013 we can have 44 full listed players and 9 rookies. Hence the need to delist 4 players off full list.

My only query is GCS able to use Jaeger O'Meara as 1 of the 2 new full listed draftees that have to be added in 2013. I was not sure how he is treated as he is the "Claytons" player for the GCS in 2012.
